The Gilded Lilys pilot, Shonda Rhimes' attempt at making a soapy US Downtown Abbey for ABC, has leaked:

Wow! I remember this being announced around the same time as The Gilded Age. I thought Gilded Lilys would just be a cheap Downton knockoff whereas The Gilded Age would have a bit more class and gravitas because Julian Fellowes was involved. Little did we know, it’d be ten years before either of them would surface.

This reminds me of another upscale New York soap from the early 00’s that never got off the ground. Three versions of Gramercy Park aka 111 Gramercy Park were devised, with none of them making it to air on ABC. The first version featured a cast including Joel Grey, Jaleel White and Tippi Hedren and, as per the blurb below, fancied itself as a Dallas / Dynasty for the new millennium

The neo-classical facade of 111 Gramercy Park looks down upon the streets of Manhattan. But within this grand residential building, the rooms and hallways are alive with high and low drama. And no one knows more about the secrets of its "upstairs" residents than the nannies and doormen "downstairs." Ken and Cathy Wilton are a growing, picture-postcard family. Wealthy, worldly, and attractive, their estrangement has plunged them into a world of hurt and revenge. Turk Karnegian is a Wall Street raider who never learned the meaning of "enough." He has the money and power to destroy anyone who dares stand in his way – even his own son. Likeable, easygoing Nick Granville is heir to a fortune, but you'd never know it by his blue jeans and workshirt; he's not the man to let his millions stand in the way of true love. And high above in the penthouse perches the unchallenged ruler of the roost – Eleanor Granville, society doyen, toyer with lives, maker-breaker of dreams. Her secret is the most explosive of all. Below stairs, the building hums. Outspoken social philosophers Gus and B.J. tend the leaky old pipes and chauffeur pets to their groomers. William, the all-seeing, all-knowing master of the foyer, defends the privacy of the residents and smoothes the kinks from their silky lives. Maddy, the nanny for anxious new parents Mimi and Jack Phillips, has a lot to learn about life. But she already guesses that the Karnegian's dazzling young nanny Brynn is not who she appears to be. With an electrifying cast led by Frank Langella, 111 GRAMERCY PARK delivers high drama in the tradition of Dallas and Dynasty, with a distinctive new-millennium twist

The full pilot for this first version is available online. A reworked second version never got as far as the casting stage and a third version featured a cast including Milo Ventimiglia and Samaire Armstrong and shifted it’s focus to three nannys working for the wealthy of Gramercy Park (see blurb below). Most of the third version’s pilot is also available online.

There are the wealthy. The very wealthy. And then the obscenely wealthy. They would be the residents of 111 Gramercy Park. Old money, new money, married into money. The only thing they care about more than money is spending it well... and naturally, having children to inherit what's left. Now meet the overworked, underpaid staff, the nannies who are the only ones allowed to see what really goes on behind closed doors. More intimate than friends, yet still strangers. They have keys to their homes and share secrets about who's nice, who's mean, who's cheap, who cheating, who's abusive, and who's an outright criminal. Enter a world where the normal rules just don't apply – where power and passion fuel ego. Picture the Carringtons, the Colbys, the Ewings, their nannies and help all living together in one perfect Manhattan apartment building. Upstairs and downstairs collide in a true drama of the classes

Interesting - the first version was filmed in 2003 and the second (third?) in 2004 - the same season Desperate Housewives debuted. So it's obvious ABC was looking for a prime time soap - looking at it they had nowhere to put it in '03-04, which might've been the reason why they choose to redevelop it. Of course, Desperate Housewives ended up being a killer on Sunday nights in the next season and Boston Legal did okay (and of course, the midseason entry Grey's Anatomy is still running), so you can't fault them for passing on it. But it would've been interesting to have seen how a Desperate Housewives / Gramercy Park combo would've done.

Yes, ABC was pretty consistent with their attempts to develop soaps during the 00’s (Football Wives and The Corsairs being two others I recall) but once they had their successful soapy double shot of Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters on Sunday nights and Grey’s Anatomy became a hit (which I believe is soap/medical drama), there wasn’t much of a need to fill the schedule with more soaps.

There was the idea for a Dynasty Hotel spin-off ...where Fallon & Jeff rent a hotel but PSM didn´t want to do a spinoff -in 1991 she said something like "I´m in a number 1 show and should do a spinoff ..nobody knows if the people will watch it. I´m not crazy"

I read something about Joan Collins becomming her very own Alexis spinoff during the mid 80´s - maybe it was in her autobiography "Second Act"
-Could this have been more succesful than "The Colbys"? They had to air it right after "Dynasty" and Caress or Dominique or both should have become real big bitches before Alexis leaves town ... but they had to give her a whole new family to fight/love with ... Maybe she could have steal Sable´s husband Jason to start the fight of the b*tches in California ...? But she looked better with a younger man like Dex. Maybe both could have moved to LA after Jeff gave her his shares of ColbyEnterprises as a present if she stops overtaking DC ... but this is not the real reason Alexis leaves town. Caress blackmailed her to give her ColbyCo otherwise Alexis had to go to jail because she would say the world what really happened on Zach Power´s yacht. But could have Dynasty worked without Alexis?

Yes, but not vice versa. An spin-off would have been absolutely pointless because the other Dynasty characters had helped to shape "Alexis" as we know her, and the same goes for Fallon as portrayed by Pamela Sue Martin. DYNASTY is part of their soap DNA.
The recast of Fallon was probably a blessing in disguise for THE COLBYS.

It's interesting because when Family Guy spun-off Cleveland into his own show instead of the more popular Quagmire, I recall the producers commenting that they choose Cleveland because he wasn't as fully realised character that Quagmire was; so there was something to build on for the new show. The same thing could be applied to Knots Landing I guess - we had heard and seen a little of both Gary and Val, but it was all very much a rough frame work and not really much detail going into their characters or backstories. So they didn't have a lot of restrictions on them.

A proper Fallon spin-off (ie one with PSM) would've had to have taken her backstory on Dynasty and built upon it while also not going against what was previously established. I guess that's why ultimately Fallon became more of a background character caught in situations between men rather than the Fallon we knew on Dynasty. And trying to spin off Alexis just would've been even worse.

I saw her mention this in a documentary too (True Hollywood Story or something similar). Discussing salary, she said her agent told her she should either be getting more money or she should have her own show. I’m not sure if it went any further than that. I agree with what others have said, I think an Alexis spin-off would have been a disaster.

- I think its better for her reputation not becomming a spin-off ... she was the key to Dynasty´s success but in the spin-off without Linda & John you would have seen that Joan/Alexis wasn´t enough to make a popular show ... I don´t know if Alexis vs Sable in a spin-off could have been succesful ... are 2 english bi*ches fighting over and over enough?

I think the main issue is that in order to create a spin-off you kind of have to build a world around the spun-off character that makes sense for them to be in - and there's honestly very little that makes sense for Alexis outside Dynasty. She's also a hard character to "reinvent" because everything about her on Dynasty had been so established - that's why Gary and Val worked on Knots Landing; they weren't very developed so they could write them to fit into the cul-de-sac.

Jeff was probably the right character to spin-off since he had always been Fallon's appendage and we actually knew fairly little about Jeff himself. The issue was bringing Fallon with him, someone who was a very specific character who existed in the Dynasty universe. The other alternative would've been to just temporarily transplant The Colby family into the show for a bit (like they did) without bringing any other character with them a la Jake on Melrose Place. But of course the appeal of sending over a popular character is that the audience will follow... in theory.

I would love to watch this obvious Dark Shadows meets Dynasty rip off but the picture quality is so terrible. It sounds to me that the music scoring is rehashed from The Colbys only with slight variation.

That music score is also very like some of the stuff from Dynasty season 9 as well.

I just checked IMDb and Dark Mansions was indeed scored by Ken Harrison who scored lots of The Colbys and some season 8 and 9 of Dynasty. He most definitely has a style and I like it. It's very sweeping and grand but also very ominous.

It was also part produced by Robert McCullough who produced early Falcon Crest. Dark Mansions does have a wee bit of that Falcon Crest vibe about it, a bit gothic, the extended intermingled families, the old house etc. I would have loved if this show had have been picked up it's actually right up my street. It would have been better than Hotel.

After Bob McCullough was pushed out of FALCON CREST (and the show never recovered) Aaron Spelling acquired him to produce HOLLYWOOD WIVES (which Jackie Collins hated). But McCullough later said what sunk him with Spelling was the DARK MANSIONS pilot because the test audiences laughed at it --- which McCullough blamed (perhaps rightly) on the over-the-top music score from Harrison.

The score is indeed too heavy-handed for TV pilot; it might be more acceptable for a later episode once the series' identity had been established.

In the process of reading about John Conboy’s unrealised daytime soap Casino, I came across this SOD article from 1990 that says he was also working on a primetime series with Donna Mills called Riverside Drive. I can’t find any other info on it anywhere. Has anyone else heard of this proposed series?

The pilot for mid-00’s FOX soap Born in the USA (titled This Land here) has surfaced. It was supposed to be a kind of American EastEnders (it was co-created by former EE exec Mal Young) and would have run a few nights a week had it been picked up.

Futon Critic development page:

Interesting that it made it all the way to pilot - I'm not sure how Fox would've scheduled a half hour soap in the 2007-08 season, but it would've been the first half hour soap to air in prime time in the US since Peyton Place.

I haven't watched it yet, but I assume it might've had a more comedy slant?

ETA: I'm surprised at how straight up soap it is! It's not spectacular by any means and I don't think anything stands out as "missed opportunity" from this pilot alone, but it would've been interesting to see how it would've done.

Going back a couple of years earlier, FOX and Simon Fuller were looking to do a straight Americanisation of EastEnders. I’m presuming this is what it morphed into.

As you mentioned, it would’ve been the first half hour primetime soap since Peyton Place. I’m presuming they would’ve paired it with a sitcom had it made it to air.

Looking at it, American Idol aired an half hour irregularly, so that's a time slot it would've taken.

At least another? I assume this is why it wasn't picked up.

I’ve just watched it and yes, it’s straight up soap. It’s definitely patterned after EE. They love a good wedding in the pub in Walford and that old guy dying after being robbed by that emo kid has shades of the Reg Cox murder in EE’s opening episode. But as you said, it’s not exactly a missed opportunity in terms of what could have been.
