Oh I remember this theme. My parents watched this show way back in the late 1980s I think. I never did. It was called "Kliniken" in Swedish.

1.Knots Landing. I downloaded it to my Ipod and love listening to it
2. Dynasty- The the only thing consistently good about the series.
3. Dallas. I want to put it higher for sentimental reasons, but I didn't.
4. Falcon Crest. I always think of the setting-those vineyards!

1 - Dynasty: this was just so lush. So regal. So majestic. Particularly when they upped the ante with the trumpets from season two onward.
2 - Flamingo Road: as others have pointed out, it was unique and it really gave a feeling of the sweaty Southern swampland that the show was set in.
3 - Bare Essence: I know that this won't appear anywhere on the top 5 but I'm throwing it in because I love the drama of it. It sounds akin to the themes of those big miniseries like Lace and North & South.
4 - Knots Landing: my favourite is the season 5 version. Particularly that middle bit (bridge?) that kicks in around Constance McCashin's title card. I liked how they kept tweaking it over the years to keep it fresh, even if some of the later versions sounded a bit generic.
5 - Falcon Crest: like Bare Essence, the arrangement on this was such high drama.
Honourable mention should also go to Paper Dolls for eschewing the standard orchestral dramatics that the other soaps used and went for a more pop theme that is probably the only theme that you could say sounds truly 80's today.

The opening credits are so much fun, Jessica Walter as the hysterical bitch-diva, and somehow I keep seeing Michael Woods putting his arm in a crocodile's mouth.

J.R.: "Oh I've learned in this business you have to roll with the punches."
J.R.: "Harry, hi! J.R. Ewing here. Fine, fine. Can you give me a report on Ewing 23 please? 5000 barrels a month."
J.R. speaks to Cliff: "I figure your share should be about half a million dollars a year."
J.R. to Harry on the phone: "Harry this is what I want you to do, close down that field. That's right. Shut down every single well."
Poor Cliff doesn't know which way to turn.

The military band sound definitely makes it the most descriptive intro theme. You wouldn't think this was about oil or wine.

Prime Time Soap Down Under managed to score 6 points.
The beginning is very good as it sounds both grandeur-ish and sinister, but somehow - the typical "bridge" notwithstanding - it struggles to maintain its momentum.

The intro's intro sounds a little hesitant, almost as if it feels obliged to be the DYNASTY twin, but then it suddenly explodes into something else and from that point on The Colbys march to the beat of their own drum.
