LOS CABOS, Mexico – Swinging by Mexico’s 5th Los Cabos Film Festival Friday to present “Snowden,” his biopic about whistleblower Edward Snowden, three-time Oscar winner Oliver Stone expressed his surprise at Donald Trump’s election as the next President of the United States.

“I said I’d eat my shirt if Trump won and I had to look for a shirt to eat,” he laughed. “So I’m not going to predict who’s going to win in four years,” he said when asked how he imagined the U.S. then. “Everyone is so terrified of Trump; but it’s probably not as dramatic as that,” he cautioned. “It’ll be more conservative at first.”

Stone went on to say he was “very concerned” that an administration under Hillary Clinton would have leaned towards neo-conservatism; that she would have wanted regime change in Russia and China.

“With Trump, I hope that he has the good sense, because he’s a businessman, that he would find a way to make a deal with Russia as well as China, and that would be better for everybody.”

Citing that no country would accept Snowden when he was fleeing U.S. authorities after exposing the NSA’s cyber espionage activities on even its allies, he said: “It’s a dangerous world where one country [the U.S] is telling the world what to do, with the exception of Russia, China and North Korea.” “Let’s hope for a balance of power.”

“I don’t think Trump is stupid and wants World War III,” he said. “We have to talk peace,” he added.

Warning that the U.S. wants complete social control of the world, Stone said: “This is a game of power, a Game of Thrones, if you will, and the U.S. is very good at it.”

Bernie Sanders on how Donald Trump won the presidency:

I broadly agree with his analysis of why Trump won and what he said about Trump:"It's very easy for a President to take on little girls that wear headscarves... a little bit harder to take on Wall Street and the drug companies" was brilliant.

He asked the question why it is that white working class people who voted for Obama turned their backs on the Democrats but didn't answer it but I thought there was a hint of a suggestion that Obama, as well as Hillary, should take some of the responsibility.

Really good interview and interesting that Bernie didn't rule out running again in 2020 even though he will be almost 80.

She talks about women's role in society and it's interesting how some things never change. I guess America still wasn't ready for a female President...

Well, she received 1.5 millions votes more than Trump did, so I think America was ready. But the angry droolers guided the electoral college to a win for Señor Pumpkinhead anyway.

I was ready for a woman president, but not this woman. Neoliberalism is not my idea of greatness, unless you don't mind fracking, war, the Patriot act, the gutting of welfare, DOMA, bailouts, and so on.

I voted for Jill Stein since she actually seemed to give a shit about the plight of the 99%, and didn't mock millennials for allegedly living in their parent's basement and wanting "pie in the sky."

Yes, the electoral college is an antiquated system that should be abolished. Still, it's interesting to think that a black man like Obama was able to beat his Republican rivals much more decisively. Although his administration fell victim to neoliberalism, he campaigned as a progressive beacon of change. Hillary, on the other hand, bragged about being a moderate and picked another moderate as her VP.

Democrats had a chance to run a well liked progressive, but chose a war mongering corporatist instead. And since they're choosing to blame everybody but themselves, it's clear to me that they haven't learned a thing. Don't get me wrong, Trump is awful and is staffing his administration with hateful monsters. However, if Democrats think that means the key to winning is to move to the right themselves, they are sadly mistaken.
