But there's no denying that some of these Westerns are very well made.
RED RIVER (1948) is about a big cattle enterprise facing various obstacles, most notably the characters themselves.
It's a good and unsentimental drama but it's almost ruined in the last act when a female character is introduced. The way she chews the scenery doesn't fit the tone of the film at all.
I would have liked to see more of the bromance between Matt and Cherry.
There are a few scenes during darkness that have an almost eerie undertone, as if I was watching the ghosts of these cattle men, and the subtle score (which is far from subtle in everything else in the film) works very well in those scenes.
I have the Criterion Collection DVD of RED RIVER.

And Once Upon A Time In The West (featuring one of the best Western villains ever).

And one of the most resonant scores.

Apparently, Fonda had a hard time shooting the little boy. To his credit.

THE LONER, that aired from September 1965 until March 1966. It stars Lloyd Bridges as William Colton, a former Union calvary captain who moves to the American West in search of a new life.
I watched the first episode of THE LONER today. It's uploaded for free You-Know-Where.

It was a good beginning, I thought. The first thing I noticed was how different it felt from other Western TV shows I've seen from this time period. It just, somehow, seems more real. The acting was good and the writing provided more depth than what I've seen on other shows.

As I watch more, I'll come back and write more.

CBS was displeased with THE LONER's different tone -- they'd expected more shooting and chasing and saving people.

Seriously, that's what they said.

I don't doubt it. I imagine it wasn't what the network wanted in terms of a Western TV show.

I watched the second and third episodes of THE LONER today while on my lunch break.

The second episode, "The Vespers", sees Colton meeting up with a man that saved his life during the Civil War. The man (Jack Lord) is now a minister, but he's being hunted by a gang for killing their brothers. The recently-converted minister initially refuses to defend himself in any physical way, so Colton prepares to return the favor of saving his life.

The third episode, "The Lonely Calico Queen", was actually quite sad. Colton witnesses the death of a man by a bounty hunter. He notices the man was carrying a letter to a woman, so he decides to take it to her. Upon arrival, the young saloon hall girl thinks Colton is her pen pal, a man she's never met. When she learns of his fate, she decides to revert to a life in the saloons, basically parading herself for drunken men.

They were two more good episodes.
