Corrie bosses hope 'modern Jack and Vera' Fiz and Tyrone can save show's ratings

They hope to turn long-running couple Fiz Stape and Tyrone Dobbs into a modern day version of the legendary Duckworths.

Really??? Have they not looked on IT3 and seen who the real Jack & Vera are? My goodness, they need a serious wake-up call here

The couple have been relatively quiet in recent years (No they have not, they're been involved in many stupid storylines) but will be brought back into hard-hitting storylines after Fiz actress Jennie McAlpine’s return from I’m A Celeb.

They already live in Jack and Vera’s old house together (AND that is the ONLY connection they can ever make) and her first comeback storyline will show her going mad at Tyrone following his affair with Gemma Winter.

The scenes will echo Jack and Vera’s up-and-down relationship in the 80s and 90s. Jennie will be involved in a huge fight with Gemma and berate mechanic Tyrone, played by Alan Halsall, in the way Street firebrand Vera did.

The actress revealed: “There’s a catfight with a difference. (Yeah, that is you can't act!!) There’s violence involved. It’s in a number of different locations and will be huge.”

Fiz is set to get her own back just like Vera did by having her own affair. (I highly doubt it will be anything like what Vera did)

Jennie added: “I think we have to have a bit of tit for tat. I will be speaking to the casting department.”

Their storylines will also draw more comparisons as the popular Cobbles couple face problems with their own troubled child Ruby. (Ruby is 7 years old, Terry was in his 20s and though not the greatest of actors, they'll never be able to reflect on his shady ways)

Jack and Vera went through hell with their son Terry. (And now Corrie is putting us viewers through hell, just thinking that Fiz & Tyrone could be the next Duckworths) Corrie bosses have been blasted by viewers for making the show either too dreary or “unrealistic” with plots like twisted serial killer Pat Phelan’s reign of terror. (So to counteract all this they create an unbelievable notion that they can take it back to what was popular via these two idiots!!!)

The move to push popular characters like Tyrone and Fiz (POPULAR???) back into the limelight is part of a bid to keep older viewers.

An insider said: “Producers have been listening to the criticism (Yeah and my name is Sally) and are beginning to change the fabric of the show.

“Their plans for Fiz and Tyrone should keep fans happy, at least for a bit.” (I already feel sick!!)

What Corrie needs to do is to put an end to all the depressing storylines, that's what'll win back most viewers, past and present, Corrie is known for its humour and its forward thinking approach, Fiz and Tyrone don't fit in the humorous Jack and Vera mould.

Lets not recreate old characters or make new Jack and Vera's how about developing the first Gemma or the first Craig etc etc

While I was happy with Kate Oates work on Emmerdale her work on Corrie has been slightly more disappointing and below par.

Jack and Vera always said that Tyrone was more like a son to them them than Terry ever was, so it's only right that he should live in the shadow of their memory. Plus, I doubt Bill Tarmey and Liz Dawn would disapprove of the younger stars following in their footsteps. They took the young actors under their wing back in the day, so for them to be remembered in this way is lovely.

I liked Jack and Vera a lot, but for me, they always felt like a more cartoonish, sentimental version of the Ogdens. And on it goes, I suppose ...

If you are happy with a weak (much weaker) representation of two classic characters then a big thumbs up to you.

I'm guessing you're happy with whatever they throw at you.

LOL

And do you feel it's working the same way with Fiz & Tyrone?

I would settle for a happier balance between the two, I do enjoy the gritty stories and I see some humour is still there. Liz & Eileen's scenes where they were hiding from Moira were hilarious and we still get snippets of humour in quite a number of characters, but it's really heavy on the darker tone and unlike the days of Richard Hilman, we're not getting the same equivalent as we did back then in terms of what humour was around.

Yes, absolutely, there's no need to live any anyone's shadows and while we have to expect an element of stories told again and again over 60 years, the key to that is having different characters experience this and not try to like new characters to old characters.

Oh, I haven't seen Corrie in ages -- I think the last time I saw Fiz and Tyrone, she was in prison for killing John Stape and he was being beaten up by his policewoman girlfriend!

oh thats depressing! The big difference between the 2 couples was that Jack and Vera could
A Act
B do comedy and make you laugh
C do drama and pathos
D - be touching, moving and make you cry, especially with the scenes over young Tommy, the garndson and with jack and his pigeons, it was a long time ago in the days when Tracey Braburn (now Labour MP) was in the show and i was touched by just how moving Bill Tarmey could be. Jack and Vera were a couple you cared for, rooted for and were frequently the under dogs.

I thought i would miss Corrie and whats happening, Im not - and have found (Comorant) Strike, Collateral, Next of Kin and Marchella to fill the 7.30pm slot

I still say its on far too often / too many episodes / week and 3 are quite enough

The Young cast members dont fill me with hope for the future (with a few exceptions) and they have lost the plot with far fetched story telling.
Corrie needs a change of direction and producer and get back to basics and northern humour.

be touching, moving and make you cry,
This reminds me of the big story they gave Fiz & Tyrone on their daughter having cancer and it went on a few months over the Christmas period. I felt nothing for either actor. This is a young child with cancer (FGS!!) and there was never any real emotion coming from Fiz or Tyrone.

I think soaps have become way too comfortable, and Corrie has fallen into that trap, I completely agree with @Barbara Fan there are way too many episodes, three episodes is enough, five or six is overkill.

Its telling that there hasn't been a successful soap - daytime or primetime - launched since Doctors in 2000, which is basically the better part of two decades, yet it seems that the soaps are relying too much on the past lately, either by moulding existing characters into newer versions of older and past characters or they're bringing back too many older characters who have been out of the show for years in some attempt a recapturing some "glory era"

Coronation Street in particular is suffering from this I find, we the audience don't expect soaps to become some glossy, American Netflix production, but just a happy balance between, Reality, OTT and Humour.

There's a difference between living in a old characters shadow and moulding the current character into a newer version of them, for me it kinda smacks that perhaps the writers have ran out of ideas for Fiz and Tyrone, some characters do come to a natural end.

There are many faults with CS, but the headline "Corrie bosses hope 'modern Jack and Vera' Fiz and Tyrone can save show's ratings" (not sure which paper this was in the Daily Fake News?) ratings are not the issue, they are in rude health and over 8 million in the official ratings and over 2 million ahead of EastEnders and a million ahead of Emmerdale, so ratings wise they are talking b*****ks.

If we are talking the quality of the acting and writing then that is a different kettle of fish, as the show in that regard stinks.

On the subject of Jack and Vera, I didn't mind them, they were good, imo overated at times and not in the same league as Stan and Hilda who they came into replace.

Yes the Duckworth's were in many ways the replacement for the Ogden's but they quickly became their own characters and not carbon copies.

Shows are always going to fill a void where a character(s) have left behind.

EastEnders did this with The Mitchell brothers who essentially replaced Den,
Peggy Mitchell, in many ways was a composite replacement for Lou Beale as the matriarchal role and Angie Watts for the larger life Queen Vic landlady role.

Eli Dingle replaced Cain Dingle who himself had previously replaced Butch Dingle on Emmerdale, and in 1988 The Hughes family replaced the outgoing Merrick clan who would depart the following year.

The mistake is, is moulding existing characters into older characters as it means you've ran out of ideas for the existing characters.
