Tom Petty dies

US musician Tom Petty has died in California aged 66, says a statement issued on behalf of his family.

Petty was found unconscious, not breathing and in full cardiac arrest at his Malibu home early on Monday.

He was taken to hospital, but could not be revived and died later that evening.

Petty was best known as the lead singer of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, and his hits included American Girl, Breakdown, Free Fallin', Learning to Fly and Refugee.

"He died peacefully at 20:40 Pacific time (03:40 GMT Tuesday) surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends," said his long-time manager Tony Dimitriades.

A statement on the singer's Twitter page described Petty's passing as an "untimely death".

I had a stalker in college who called me for a couple of years and played "Here Comes my Girl" and "American Girl" over the phone and identified himself as "Tom". I'm guessing he had the hots for me, especially given that I didn't read as effeminate, although I apparently came off (I say immodestly) as "dark, sensitive and sensuous".

I'm convinced he wasn't actually Tom Petty. Although I've never quite ruled out Michael Stipe.

Not to make this all about me, but folks on soapchat say I have a terrible ego anyway.

Heh. Well, it's not that I was all that breath-takingly beautiful as a mere wisp of a boy. In fact, I'm usually pretty disappointed in old pictures of me from then, hoping I'll find "my goodness, wasn't I fine??" and I really don't.

I had a quality, however. People found me mysterious, that horrible word vulnerable (which is actually a semi-insult, especially when directed at males) and girls saw me as accommodating and ready to provide services, while guys saw me as potentially pervy but hard to access in a way. Unfortunately, I was quite in love at the time. Which is not always the best thing to happen to you at that age, especially when it's real, because it can distract you and sort of shut you down, but that's part of my story.

Anyhoo, the first thing I associate with Tom Petty, due to no fault of his own, is my college stalker. Not that it got dangerous or anything. But I've had more than my allotment of fatal attractions directed at me. Such that you'd think I was prettier than I was. But it seemed to have to do with something else.

I honestly didn't remember him at all but that doesn't mean he wasn't telling the truth. Relationships can be so complicated!

I think the thread title should have been "has died" instead of "dies" (he's not dying as we speak - I hope).

Sometimes people have a relationship with you you don't know anything about. I, for one, seemed to get noticed the quieter and more enigmatic I was.

I think the thread title should have been "has died" instead of "dies" (he's not dying as we speak - I hope).

I prefer he "transitioned" but now that means something else. Perhaps "on an extended tour, all shows sold out" ?

As I posted on another thread, I recently bought the two Travelling Wilburys albums.

That's mostly what I know Tom Petty from - except for his hit "I Won't Back Down" which I have found to be a inspiration at times.

I had sort of a premonition a few days before Roy Orbison died in December of 1988.
