It's shameful and gaudy, yes, but at least it only symbolically represents 9/11 (meaning nobody actually died here).
Trump is a disgrace, but this was destined to happen with or without him. Ever since the Bush Administration and the war on terror, it's been open season on the Constitution. Presidential power was expanded during that time, and Congressional checks and balances have basically been eliminated. The leftists who recognized what a disaster that was were called terrorist sympathizers by the conservatives, and now our worst fears have come true. Trump is essentially free to do whatever he wants unchecked. That includes starting a war, tearing down a historic part of the White House, throwing his name on the Kennedy Center, and so on. Sometimes, the courts will intervene like they did with the Kennedy Center and now the construction of the ballroom, but it's always after the fact. That said, Trump is still just the symptom of a far bigger systemic problem.
