Labour have held the seat with a 10,974 majority and a 61% vote share, which was the party's best-ever result in the seat.
IMO it’s a fairly good result for Labour save for a few caveats.
Firstly, voter turnout was low at 41 per cent. It can be expected to be around 70 per cent (roughly double this) at the next general election.
Secondly, there was no ”interference” in this poll from the right wing press with them directing their readers to vote in a particular way or for a particular party, as happens in general elections. So, this needs to be factored into the result.
Finally, if this result was to be replicated uniformly across the country it would give Keir Starmer a narrow victory rather than the thumping majority being predicted by a number of recent polls showing Labour to be as much as 30 points ahead of the Tories.
This means therefore that the next general election is still very much up for grabs with no room for complacency on the part of the Labour leadership.
