Behind a character is the actor and his biography
According to wikipedia:
Her father de ella was a meal company laborer and her mother was a doctor's stenographer and office assistant.
In October 1921, her biological parents divorced and her father died unexpectedly three months later. After his death, her mother moved to Cleveland, Ohio, leaving her to be reared by foster parents, Emma (née Reiss) [2] [3] and Richard D. Fulks, the chief of detectives in Saint Joseph. [
Her unsettled family life resulted in few pleasurable memories. Wyman later said "I was raised with such strict discipline that it was years before I could reason myself out of the bitterness I brought from my childhood."
Was Jane Wyman abandoned by her mother? In 1921 she had no economic depression. Because she was given by her mother for adoption.

My understanding of her early life was that after her parents divorced and her biological father died, Jane's birth mother couldn't find work (it was during the depression) and so couldn't afford to bring up her daughter alone so she left Jane with a foster family.

Jane's mother always planned to come back for Jane once she got a job and could afford to raise her but the foster parents became attached to Jane and wanted to adopt her legally.

I think to say her mother abandoned Jane is not entirely accurate but she did give up her daughter to another family to raise.
