At the time to me it was, yes.
The Colbys started a little late in Germany back then, it was the worst Dynasty-time with the Kwythteeena heart story
and i was so glad because The Colbys were so brilliant in comparison. Dallas and Falcon Crest bored me as well these days, so YES, these Colbys were the best thing then!

I wasn´t even able to watch The Colbys, we had no cable TV jet, and nearly went MAD, when I heard it airs on SAT 1...I will never ever forget this

I understand your frustration, phil colby. I was aware of the spin-off via magazine articles and it was on BBC but at that time we couldn't receive that channel.
And then it started on the Belgian-French channel RTBF. I don't even remember how I found out because the schedules of these insignificant channels were always printed in tiny letters, but anyway, I was so desperate to see this show that I watched the whole first season with French dubbed voices, and - needless to say - no subtitles whatsoever.
We've talked about the DVDs a lot, and then it really happened! I'm going to touch the DVDs with the beautiful slipcases because I still can't believe it.
It was such a fantastic and unexpected surprise!
Of course I also couldn't help comparing it to Dynasty but surely it's also possible to judge it on its own merits.
The Colby house was often a complete war zone, like one of those ancient Roman tragedies.

I Think no foreign country was able to show The Colbys syncron to Dynasty...oh my the stupid TV- Producers!!!!
But at least, now we have it all...and hopefully soon in HD.

Personally I think the picture quality of the DVDs is impeccable. Does it have to be sharper and sharper?

Me too, for a show as old as it is and for one that wasn't aired on TV that much, it's pretty great quality.
Loved the first season. The second season was so-so.
I have not seen this one yet @Willie Oleson lets slide it into the DVD player this Winter and watch it through your lovely eyes.

I don't know if THE COLBYS was the best thing on TV, but when soapchat "crashed" a couple of months ago, the only thread on the entire site I really missed was one about the Did-Cecil-kill-his-Mama? plot macguffin.

Also: Dynasty II: Can You Tell It Apart From Dynasty I ? I think it was the longest thread ever on The Colbys forum, and had some interesting on-topic & off-topic discussions.
I remember my heart racing when I heard the Colbys theme for the first time. Man, that was electric!

Seperating from Dynasty with copying the same main-storyline Dynasty had just 2 years before (who's the father of Jeff's wives' baby, wife got raped by Jeff's adversary and we get the raping flashback scene while she's at the doctor's and Jeff after that embraces her and says "I'm so happy")? Well, not really.
