CBS are pushing the boat out with a five part “Welcome to the Neighbourhood” special, that will be airing Monday to Friday at 2pm next week (followed by classic B&B episodes). One of the hosts will be Sheryl Underwood, providing an interesting bit of daytime continuity, as BTG is taking over the timeslot from Sheryl’s old stomping ground The Talk.

Also @Karin and whatsherface - CHCH is going to air it live:

About 19:00 or maybe 20:00. It'll be great!
The opening credits are in keeping with the style of the other CBS soaps but that intro music is pretty ordinary IMO. Regardless, I’m looking forward to watching this coming week.

It would be fun if Sweden offered more than just B&B and DAYS. I had prefered GH, but BTG would have been fun to see.

So the first episode has aired - mind you, the first week is like the pilot of a daytime drama!

The Core Four (Anita, Vernon, Nicole, Dani) did amazing. Now... there's the rest. Let me say that I loved Vanessa because she was all over the canvas and doing her gossip mess. Then there was the obligatory white couple... who were. Um. I guess health care workers are always needed on soaps! But that firefighter husband needs to shape up or ship out. He was not good!
Also, why is Haley giving Brooke vibes? "I'm a homewrecker-slut but I'm also innocent boohoo" is a really annoying way to live your life, just saying.

Poor Jen Jacobs who'll be "bland health care worker" who'll get wrecked by her association with the Duprées. @Daniel Avery

Also the Brooke from B&B character. SURE YOU DIDN'T GET YOU WRECKED THE FAMILY

Actually, every new daily soap I've seen in the last twenty years (I don't just watch American ones) has been like this: I didn't like it at first, but over time, when I tuned in again, I might find something I liked (or the script had improved in the meantime), but mostly the first impression remained and I didn't become a regular viewer, so I can't predict at all what Beyond the Gates will be for me.

Unfortunately, I found the first episode boring, which for me personally is even worse than if I had found it bad. Nothing appealed to me. However, I think BTG fits into the rhythm of CBS soaps because there is far too much talking.

I look at it this way: A lot of characters we've just met spent an hour talking about recent events in their lives that we did not see and referred to characters we have yet to meet. It's unrealistic to expect us to be emotionally invested in the things the characters are talking about right away; in fact, it will take some time to become familiar enough with the characters to "follow" what they're talking about. It's easy to "zone out" in the midst of exposition dialogue when you have no emotional investment (or really any feelings at all) about the people being talked about. It will take some time for viewers to become absorbed in what they're watching. For now, it's an exercise in taking mental notes about who is related to whom and what they mean to one another. There's plenty of time to decide who we like, dislike, etc. and have an opinion about what is happening to them.

The most difficult thing about a soap opera is figuring out how to start it.

I just watched the 2nd episode:

1) Good mother/daughter scene between Dani and Anita with Tamara doing more with her expressions then most people do with their whole body. You can tell she acted in the soaps back in the day.

2) I guess the punch to the face has temporarily affected Hayley's ability to think logically because why else would she go visit Nicole.

3) I'm gathering that the three new characters that interacted with the nurse will form the Have Nots... and I saw the look one of them gave the doctor (I think was Nicole's husband).

I took the liberty to sticky this thread and making the title another "Watching...." one to match the others.

I have read the recaps to the 4 four episodes and I like it so far. BTG feels like a classic US daytime soap. I am beginning to learn the family trees quite well.

And I have my guesses about the secrets. I think serial cheater Bill helped to cover up politician Martin's old crime so that Martin would not lose his career. I think it was a hit and run car accident. Maybe a DUI involved. His career would have been doomed for life.

I think mother/daughter Leslie and Eva are targeting Nicole and Ted because of old reasons. I think maybe Eva is Ted's unknown lovechild. That would be a reason for them to force themselves into Ted's and Nicole's lives. Or if they blame the Richardsons for something done in the past.

They had a daunting task launching the first new soap in 25 years with a new tv landscape. I viewed the entire first week as the pilot and overall they gave me what I needed to continue watching. Now that we're into week two I feel like things are settling in nicely and they're able to slow down and deepen the characters more. With any soap there are growing pains but with the quick improvements I'm seeing, I can't wait to see where this show will be in 3-6 months.
