Jadoo (2013)
AKA Jadoo: Kings Of Curry
This has everything I love in British films: perfect casting; a wonderful sense of humour; a keen eye for humanity; a touch of pathos and a huge heart.

High Crimes (2002)
Not top drawer, but still gripping with some nice twists and a few big jump scares which I hadn't been expecting from a thriller of this kind. And Morgan Freeman's in it, which is always a huge plus.

Raising Helen (2004)
A distaff Uncle Buck with a dash of The Devil Wears Prada.
Kate Hudson stars as as a woman who becomes the guardian to her late sister's kids, which interferes with her job at a fashion house. John Corbett plays much the same character as he played in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, giving the film an unconsummated rom-com element ripe for a sequel.
I don't think I've seen any of Kate Hudson's films before. I still remember daffy Goldie Hawn on Laugh-In. Now her daughter's a movie star. How did that happen?

The Interpreter (2005)
I watched this one on a whim and found it thoroughly absorbing. Both leads and supporting cast were great (Sydney Pollock has a small role in addition to directing duties). It looks gorgeous and James Newton Howard's score is thrilling.

King Richard.
Wonderful beginning to end. Will Smith pulled a little something special out the bag. Saniyya Sidney as Venus Williams stole the movie. Demi Singleton as Serena waiting to step out of her sister's shadow put in noteworthy performance.
I'm quite sure that King Richard is not going to be wholly accurate testimony, but still, it's very engaging and some excellently choregraphed and shot tennis.
I don't have an interest in sport, any and all. But I admire what these two ladies have gone on to achieve. When the play Wimbledon I watch as a salute to them.

Open Water (2003)
I often watch this as part of a shark film jag and it's a nice change to watch it independently where it holds up on its own merits (I haven't even watched Jaws this year). It's a really well-made film, with documentary-like realism which adds to the increasing feeling of anxiety, panic and disorientation.
I've never found the main characters likeable and I think may be intentional as it adds a satisfying layer of schadenfreude on seeing this entitled, self-centred couple stuck in the middle of the ocean with only one another. This time round I found them a little more likeable, helped by the fact I watched it with the actors' audio commentary.

True story of a group of Black women mathematicians known as "computers" who braved the double barriers of racism and sexism to make their mark on NASA's Mercury program.
Taraji P. Henson is very good in the lead role, quite different from her Empire character, while Jim Parsons, as an engineer who never quite eats his words even as she overcomes all his objections, comes across as a less quirky Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory.

One of my favorite performances of Kevin Cosner. I thought he was terrific in this. I don’t want to give anything away for anyone who hasn’t seen this yet but the separate bathrooms scene and what his character did to rectify that was quite moving.

This film has had a lot of positive reviews but I found it tedious, dull and pointless. The film is a fictional account of 3 days in the life of Diana, Princess of Wales when she spends Christmas at Balmoral with the Royal Family. The family are formal and stiff while she is rebellious and carefree. There no real story to drive the film just a succession of scenes showing Diana's growing unease with the Royals. The film isn't particular sympathetic to her and portrays her as being slightly unhinged. I thought the Netflix series The Crown told a similar story far better and more entertainingly. On the positive side, Kristen Stewart gave a really convincing and at times moving portrayal of Diana but even she couldn't save this film.

But didn't they already do that in the Catherine Oxenberg version? (including a Dynasty-esque staircase moment!)

I first saw this film when it was released in cinemas and by then it had won a host of awards, including Golden Globes and Oscars, so I had really high expectations for it. When I watched it I felt a little let down because although I liked it, I felt it didn't live up to the hype. About 2 years later I watched it again, this time on TV when the BBC secured the broadcast rights, and I couldn't understand why I didn't considered this to be a bit of a masterpiece. It's a truly outstanding film that deserved every accolade it received.
Some films blow you away the first time you watch it and other films can take more than one viewing for you to fully appreciate how good they are.
