The Red Shoes (1948)
It's one of those films I'd never seen but always knew I
should see -- it's Martin Scorsese's favourite movie and Kate Bush named an album after it -- but, you know, it's about boring old ballet and I knew there was a really long dance sequence in it, so I wasn't in any hurry. But, surprise surprise, it's as brilliant as everyone says it is. The ballet stuff is not at all stiff and theatrical; it's really, really cinematic and almost psychedelic, which is quite remarkable given the 60s hadn't even happened yet. The whole film is beautiful to look at, so rich and vivid and colourful -- you want to pause almost every shot and hang it on your wall -- and the story is romantic and tragic and timeless: it feels earthy and otherworldly all at the same time.
