It's hard to say what happened between May 1989 to late summer 1991, mainly because The Reunion doesn't seem to follow on from season 9 directly, and it wasn't because of the years long gap between the two, The Sopranos often had a two year gap between seasons, in England the gap between seasons is often even longer than two years.

Narratively speaking it feels that the events of season 9 by the reunion didn't happen, thanks to how diabolically awful the reunion actually was, especially since TPTB placed the events of season 9 in 1988!
Placing it in the same year as season 8.

Only Joan Collins bothered in a 30'second long synopsis to fill the 2 1/2 year gap, by implying Alexis regained much of her fortune from the First Gulf War, after having extensive treatment from her fall, I'll find the video on YouTube and post it on here.

The Reunion I like to think takes place in Krystle's coma dream before she really wakes up!

The Reunion was truly awful.
Funny detail: All four of Blake and Alexis' children underwent facial surgery during the show.:p Adam in The Reunion sucked.

It should be considered a crime to leave Dynasty the way they did in the last episode of season 9. Dynasty had so much potential, and at times, there were drama that was wonderful and intriguing. But with writers who actually cared about the characters and their lives Dynasty could have been marvelous. The show had a core ensemble that was pretty unique.

I would go so far and state that without the three corner stones Blake, Krystle and Alexis the show was nothing. Even one of the three missing wouldn't work. When LE left the show much of the old glamour and style died. Blake had no real home life without a wife, and him being at the mansion was merely passing time.

Okey, Alexis wasn't in season 1 but at that time there wasn't really a need for the character. In fact she might have ruined it by coming back "too soon". As soon as the audience knew her (and her conflicts) she had to stay on.

LE should never have left. Instead Spelling should’ve talked her into staying the whole season 9, and that would be the end of it. A proper end. A end more worthy of Dynasty.
For example; Before Blake runs for Governor, he and K talk about handing over the business to the children and just "run away" to their own private paradise. That would have been a fantastic ending. Blake and Krystle (and Krystina) on their own, and the unique love could continue forever, somewhere in the world..

This makes me hate the real ending even more! There were so many other, and BETTER, endings they could have chosen.

That probably would have been for the best, although I can't help but wonder if Dynasty could have continued without the Big Three. Probably not, but I personally always think of season 9 as The Sable Era, because it all really felt like it was all about her. Oh, and Fallon. Sable and Fallon were the real stars that season. And with how "refreshed" season 9 felt, could the show have continued riding on the backs of Sable and Fallon, and a possibly returned Dominique? I can't help but think about the possibilities...

See I think Dynasty was ready for a big shake up at this point, Sable was being groomed to replace Krystle and @Ked is right, season 9 is the Sable era, Alexis is only in half the episodes, and when she's not there it somehow works, Fallon was also a big player this season, for the first time since season 4 she has a meaty, strong storyline, Knots Landing carried on for five more seasons after Abby Ewing left and I think Dynasty could've done two more seasons with new leads, JF we know was unhappy about not working with Linda Evans, but I think because he was a team player he'd carry on, providing that Blake didn't get together with Sable, hence why they had her paired off with Dex.

A Blake, Sable & Mrs Elias era could've worked, as this would've been the early 90s, plus the younger cast especially Adam, Fallon and Sammy Jo were just as much involved as the others, so I don't think
A Dynasty without Krystle and Alexis would be a complete end of the world.

It's funny as at the time over in The UK, in Eastenders in 1988 & 1989 two of the shows biggest, larger than life characters; Den and Angie Watts left the show, the press were saying that it was the end of the show and that it wouldn't survive without them, yet by 1990 there was a new set of characters that took the show into a new era: The Mitchell Brothers, another example was when Shannon Doherty left BH 90210 people said the same thing as Brenda Walsh was the original female lead, but that show carried on into the 90s and just making it to the 2000s.

With Paulson at the helm I think Dynasty could've survived as far as 1991.

Sable could carry a show, but Fallon was never that kind of character for me, although she was strong.

I'm not sure if Dynasty could've lived into the 90's. JF and LE did get older and JF was already way older than LE. I just don't see Dynasty as Dynasty without the patriarch Blake. He had such an impact and strong presence on the show.

Something like this:
Alexis could've moved into the mansion, with Fallon and Jeff as her family and, at the same time, her conscience. Sable could weasel her way into Colbyco and fight with Alexis. Sammy Jo had to be written out. But Adam, Dana and Dex would've been good to have on. Occasionally the Colbys from California could come to Denver to stir things up and give Alexis more headache.:p

If Krystle wasn't there the focus could no longer be on Blake, therefor he had to go. No too big reminders of the old saga. But still with a touch of Dynasty in mostly Alexis and Fallon.

Fallon may not have been seen as a strong lead by 1988-89 because Paulsen was undoing half a dozen years worth of the systematic and gradual bastardisation and decline of the character of Fallon Carrington, Emma Samms proved that she was a worthy successor to PSM, but within a season she turned it around and made Fallon watchable again.

Fallon during this era and during the season 1-2 era proved that she had the potential to becoming a lead in her own series, the original idea for the spinoff had in aired in 1983 was for Fallon to be the main star, hard to think that this was ever considered at one time by the 1985-88 era, thanks to TPTB.

The Carrington Children that had the most potential of branching off completely were Fallon and Adam
Gordon Thomson is a capable actor and one of just a handful of actors in Dynasty i enjoyed watching in the middle years.
