What's the latest on Bette Midler as Mae West?

[ClassyCo]

I've been reading for the past few years that Bette Midler is to star in and produce a biopic on camp icon Mae West for HBO. What's up with it? Has it been shelved?

Is it fair to assume this project is dead?

Unless Bette wants to play Mae in the making of SEXTETTE, this ship should have sailed 30 years ago.
