Why make April Jack’s wife?

What did it achieve? Jack and Jamie were such nothing characters in season 10, why introduce a character related to one of them?
I think initially the introduction of April was primarily just a way of getting Jack’s 10% of Ewing Oil to Jamie so that when she dies later that season the shares go to Cliff to set up another Barnes-Ewing conflict over the company.

Remember that Jack sold his shares to his sister mainly to spite April because she was now entitled to half of what he owned, hence why Jamie got such a nice price and April only got 50 cents in the sale.

Of course none of this matters by the end of the season anyway once Ewing Oil is dissolved.

I think April was a good character, at least at the beginning.
After Susan Howard departed, I wonder if she would have been better matched with Ray

There could have been any number of reasons Jack gave his shares to Jamie. It just seems bizarre to create a character and attach them to a character that the producers had no interest in

Yes, although it appears they obviously had bigger plans for the April character than they did for Jack. Maybe attaching her to him was how it started but once he was gone it’s not like they immediately phased her out as well. Jack was soon forgotten and April got a four year run out of her character plus a sister.

It seemed to me that they really wanted a new vixen on the show. Of course, a beautiful woman can just show up and charm the men like Mandy did, but family ties make everything more interesting. Since Sue Ellen and Pam already had evil sisters on Dallas, it would have been obvious that April would have been Donna's sister, but maybe behind the scenes they already knew that Susan Howard would have to go, so Jack served as April's introduction on the show.

I suspect they made her Jack's wife so that she would have some connection to the Ewings.

The plot played out in such a way that it seemed to me that the writers changed direction in the middle of the story. Jenna was incredibly suspicious of Jamie when she first showed up. It seemed like she was going to be a vixen or at least an important adversary to the Ewings. Then they just dropped that and made her a goody-goody. I always wondered if that's why they created April - to play the character Jamie was supposed to be.

Right, like that time Katherine tried to bribe Jenna to get out of town but for some reason Jenna didn't think it was worth mentioning to Bobby!
That scene happened when producers still didn´t know that PP couldn´t act at all and tried to give her the same bitchy edge that Morgan Fairchild´s Jenna had... Poor Kathy darling, she thought that Wade woman was as much a nitwit as "poor dear Pam"...

Katherine as a character "died" in this lame scene...
