Yes - that's lovely. I'd imagine Kim leaving after around 75 episodes means her focus is more concentrated and specific.

How did I not see the Woody Allen/Diane Keaton dynamic with Richard and Laura before? I couldn't even swear that I'd heard of Married: The First Year before (even though I feel I must have done at some point on this site).



Oh, and this marks the first time I'd heard "ribald" pronounced this way (rather than with the first syllable sounding like "eye"). Rooting round the internet, it seems it's not a simple Transatlantic difference. I found examples of both Brits and Americans pronouncing it both ways.

Part 3 was very interesting with them both talking about being fired.
I didn't know Constance wrote her monologue to Meg, or that James Houghton asked to leave and that got Ginger written out too. I wonder if they could have kept her on in some way... Maybe if Chip could have murdered Kenny off screen because he finds out he killed Ciji. Could Ginger have worked with Abby and Laura at Appolune, or had a fling with Ben after Val gets pregnant. Lots of possibilities....

James Houghton asked to leave

For whatever it's worth, when we interviewed James Houghton back in the day, he said the decision to leave wasn't his. It would seem an odd thing to claim if it weren't true, kind of the opposite of saving face, but at the same time it would be ridiculous of me to claim I know better than Kim Lankford. I guess it doesn't really matter now anyway.

I wonder if they could have kept her on in some way.

As they were talking, I was thinking, well, they'd already done the bereaved wife thing with Karen and the deserted wife thing with Val, and were about to do it again with Laura, so I can see why writing the Wards out together made sense.

I was really interested when CMcC described Don Murray as "the Hoodlum Priest". At first, I thought it was a reference to The Cross and the Switchblade, a movie about a hoodlum who became a priest that was written and directed by Murray, based on a book that I had likewise been exposed to as part of a Catholic education, but it's another film entirely. Anyway, I posted this ages ago: "Once you connect Don Murray with Christianity, so much about his portrayal of Sid falls into place: the unabashed goodness; the martyrdom of Sid in "Hitchhike", which Murray wrote; Sid's outstretched arms à la Christ on the cross when he dies on the operating table …" I never realised it extended to his reasons for leaving before.

This little series has been great. (Who needs on screen interviewers?) It seems a long way from the time when the prevailing wisdom on this forum was that CMcC was totally bitter and resentful about her time on Knots and wanted nothing to do with it. Shows how much we know.

I would have totally hated this because I think one of the main things that keep the original four cohesive is the unspoken "promise" that none of them ever slept with each others' men. Then Abby shows up and that's that. lol

It's been a "pet storyline" of mine for years that Ginger would have been "Sally's Friend" (Gary's post-Jill storyline). After divorcing Kenny, she got involved with a psycho (the Danny character) and fled with Erin Molly back to California to stay with relatives. She resumed her career as a kindergarten teacher and sang in a nightclub in her spare time (which are plot points in the story that aired). Danny tracked her down, forcing her to send EM to live with Kenny just as she accidentally dialed Gary's number and started the plot moving. It would have made more sense for Gary to come to this character's defense if there had already been a connection from the past.

I agree, a real gem to find, and now we just need Donna, Joan and Michele to get their act together and release their first podcast! How fun that would be.

I think Constance was definitely upset for a long time over her Knots departure, and understandably given her previous close relationship to David Jacobs and having Laura 'created' for her. Then things like her not giving any interviews for ages and not allowing her voice to be used in the Back-to-the-Cul-De-Sac reunion just fuelled the rumours of bitterness and resentfulness. But as you say, 'prevailing wisdom' often takes hold on these forums, and we just fill in the gaps ourselves, repeating guesswork over and over until it becomes received 'fact'.

I believe Kim was told that the reason her job was eliminated was because of James H, but I also wouldn't put it past the powers that be that they told her that in order to get the heat off them and onto him.

My theory was that he went to the show because of the lack of focus/effort that the show was showing to him and/or them as a couple.. the show basically said that they really didn't fit into their plans for season 5 and dropped him. Then the show dropped her and blamed him. It sounds as though James H and Kim L didn't compare notes and so they were pitted against one another.

I gave it a listen and after my initial thoughts of “why didn’t they edit this” in the first few minutes, I actually quite enjoyed their scattergun approach to what they discussed. It really is just three old friends chatting and reminiscing.

Unlike the iHeartPodcasts series which includes the Melrose one, this isn’t a rewatching podcast. Joan came prepared with a few questions to drive the conversation but there was no specific theme to the episode. When the Pollyanna speech came up, Michele did say something like “we’ll talk about that another time” so I’m guessing there may be themes to the episodes going forward.

I just realized… Richard leaves one episode before the end of season 4. So Kenny/Ginger officially outlived the other three marriages that we started the series with. Who would have predicted that?
