Benny Hill did a comedy sketch in 1976 featuring Cannon, McCloud, Ironside, Barnaby Jones, Columbo, Police Woman, Kojak (and Stavros) and Poirot in Murder on the Oregon Express.

That reminds me of a TV Movie called Murder Can Hurt You which parodied many of the same characters.

But it has Marty Allen and Connie Stevens in it! They were both in my Mister Jerico DVD with Patrick Macnee and Herbert Lom. I still have nightmares of Marty Allen. It didn’t get to a series.

Oh, I’ve got The Two Ronnies and The League of Gentlemen

I’ve just noticed that actor Patrick Troughton turns up in well over 28 series I have on DVD. He is a series regular in over five of them. In one he makes eight guest appearances as seven different people, another four appearances and three appearances in another. Coincidence.

The US versions were made to look like individual telemovies, sometimes even with different titles. For example, the first "Lady Killer" was called The Death Policy. The lengthy animated titles portrayed half the plot.

There was one point some time back where I thought that the US titles to the Bradford Dillman (he died this week) episode, The Next Voice You See, was one of the weirdest credit things I’ve ever seen. As we’re treated to multiple images of Bradford Dillman’s blood-covered face spinning off into colour separation overlay and a time vortex of his spectacles as cast credits appear to gunshots in Bradford’s eyes before the new US title, “Look Back In Darkness” and a wine bottle go spinning in the time vortex, before shattering and forming part of the new US title in two parts and spinning off into the vortex. With some very odd music. Not helped by the post credits scene being moved to pre-credits and the pre-credits scene to the post-credits. Which ruins the surprise of what happens in the original pre-credits, because we’ve seen the decade-later flashback first. Of course, the end credits superimposed on wine bottles and moving really really slowly for a full five minutes doesn’t help. I’ve since learned that some of the other episodes have even more annoying and bizarre credits.

It's Don Adams (from Get Smart). He used that voice repeatedly over the years - in The Bill Dana Show, Get Smart of course and the animated series Inspector Gadget, among other things.

I found seasons 1-9 of Dynasty during a clear out. Well, officially it rose to the top of a water butt perfectly preserved after many years. The water butt was secreted in my great-uncle’s Logan Rhinewood files. This time I was actually strong enough to break the security seal. After another hour or so, I finally managed to get the DVDs out of their tight packaging by throwing the box set repeatedly at the sofa.

I know someone who did that, and he told me the story and characters were completely messed up after that (Ali MacGraw was Krystle, and Pamela Bellwood was Alexis).

I had never heard of this series before.

They retitled Grace & Favour in the USA and called it “Are You Being Served? Again!”. It was felt that the American audience wouldn’t understand the wordplay and meaning of the term, “grace and favour”. They also retitled the later episodes of ITC’s Danger Man in the USA as “Secret Agent”, so as not to confuse the American audience with the earlier episodes of Danger Man that were called Danger Man. Despite it all being Danger Man, the USA screenings had a new Secret Agent title sequence and a Johnny Rivers-sung song that had lyrics that didn’t have much to do with the actual show. ITC’s William Tell also underwent a theme song change in the USA because the UK theme used a section of the William Tell Overture that was being used on The Lone Ranger. ITC’s Randall and Hopkirk Deceased was another UK show that got retitled in the USA, becoming My Partner The Ghost.

And ITC’s Gideon’s Way was retitled Gideon C.I.D. in the USA, with the opening titles and Edwin Astley’s lovely title music dropped for a John Gregson-voiced opening, where he explained the format, complete with episode title sequence. But I won’t go on about it.

I just had to decide on Thriller whether I was going to be watching Edd Byrnes and Ingrid Pitt or Ian Hendry and Donna Mills or Joanna Pettet. Joanna Pettet won. She always does.
