The Nihon Sumo Kyokai announced the names of the Makushita rikishi that will be promoted to Juryo Division for the upcoming Natsu Basho. For the May tournament Hakuyouzan and Wakatakakage will make their debut as new sekitori, while Asabenkei will come back to sumo's second division.
23-year-old
Wakatakakage (Ms1w 4-3) from Fukushima Prefecture is the second sekitori for Arashio-beya in its 16-year existence, following Sokokurai who was promoted in 2010. Of the recently introduced sandanme tsukedashi designators he's thus far the slowest to reach Juryo, achieving it after 7 basho; Yutakayama did it in 4, Asanoyama in 6. Despite having made his Ozumo debut only 12 months ago, there is already one other sekitori from his Haru 2017 class, namely Enho (who had to start from maezumo). The last Fukushima-shusshin rikishi to reach Juryo before him was recently-retired Sotairyu back in 2009.
Wakatakakage is the youngest of the three Onami brothers competing out of Arashio-beya. Middle brother Wakamotoharu was 4-3 at Ms12e this time, oldest brother Wakatakamoto went 5-2 at Ms22w.
Hakuyozan (Ms1e 6-1) is still 22 years old but the Yamagata native will be 23 as well by the time the next basho rolls around. He's the third new sekitori for Takadagawa-beya since ex-Akinoshima took over the stable 9 years ago (following Ryuden and Kagayaki), and the second one to have actually been recruited by Akinoshima himself (Ryuden was already there in 2009). Hakuyozan is the 6th rikishi to become sekitori out of the Natsu 2011 "technical examination" class whose debuts were overshadowed by the yaocho scandal at the time. The most recent Juryo promotee out of Yamagata prefecture before him was Hokutokuni in 2008.
Takasago-beya's 29-year-old
Asabenkei (Ms3w 6-1) from Kanagawa prefecture returns to Juryo for his second go, following a previous 6-basho stint that had lasted from his Kyushu 2015 juryo division debut to his demotion back to makushita after Aki 2016. His 9 tournaments since then featured no records worse than 3-4 and he never dropped further than Ms10.
Besides, the rikishi who called it quit are:
Oosunaarashi
Kotomisen
Kyokuhikari
Nonaka
