It's very much in the Daily Beast's wheelhouse to pay a writer to write about OldDynasty vs. NuDynasty, only to turn it into cheap shots and pseudo-political commentary...then confess he never even watched OldDynasty half-way through the article. It's like paying someone to mow your lawn, but instead you're lectured about using the wrong fertilizers, and the landscaper confesses he never learned to operate a lawn mower.

I'm reading this article a little different. By their own admission the writer is admitting they watched Gossip Girl so you'd think this reboot of Dynasty should be right up their alley. Not so. The writer is calling out Dynasty 2.0 for all it's shortcomings...and rightfully so.

Gossip Girl became a mess after a while, but it started promising as a teen soap, given also its pedigree as based on a series of books. I think the peach Dynasty execs lack confidence in themselves and do have awe for the original.--unlike Cidre, who was all confidence and no ounce of respect for Dallas. The rumored interventions of the network on actor firings helps not at all.

What's that saying? Too many cooks spoil the broth. Maybe Sallie Patrick, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage had a vision for Dynasty. But then they had to walk up and knock on the door of the Shapiros. Then we have Mark Pedowitz becoming vocal about the Dynasty reboot. Shame really because when we look at Peach Dynasty there is a feeling the actors are getting along just fine but it's the shenanigans occuring behind the scenes which is making for compelling viewing.
Reminds me of that other beast back in the day. What was that show called again? Right...Dallas.

It should be noted that most of O.Dynasty's "glamour porn" was the wardrobe, jewelry and make-up.
All the other things that could create a High Society world (mansions, beautiful locations, social events with lots of people) were often ignored.

Interesting article. I don't agree with that people wanted The Cosby Show in 1989 though as it was quite close to the end of it's run at that time.
What the audience really wanted at that time was youth oriented soap operas such as Beverly Hills 90210 which premiered in 1990 and became a smash hit!
Also as for Cookie on Empire, I saw her as having the Alexis role on that soap. That is who the character reminded me of, not Blake's sister!
In fact Empire in the first season reminded me of a cross between the following 1980s smash hit shows:

Similar family dynamic with two parents, three sons.

Mother and father are divorced and there is lots of passion still lingering underneath the surface when mother comes back but father now has a new fiancé/wife that is standing in their way.

Lots of music numbers on the show.

The show is about an African American family.
What the audience really wanted at that time was youth oriented soap operas such as Beverly Hills 90210 which premiered in 1990 and became a smash hit!

Leonard Katzman used tons of "Dallas" shots for his highly repetitive show "Walker Texas Ranger" including that infamous Ewing Oil explosion that ended Pam´s dream!! Those producers were as cheap as they could be!!

The real crime was that in order to fit their old footage, they had Alexis drive a wreck of a car.

I imagine it might have been some stock footage, much like how certain exteriors were used on a lot of shows. It wouldn't surprise me if the car crash wasn't even filmed for Impulse to begin with.

Yeah, I have no problem with stock footage being plugged in when it isn't essential to film original content, especially when it's action sequences or establishing shots taken from a distance. As long as it doesn't "look wrong" (that is, differing quality of film making it obvious that they were edited together). Then, it adds a certain comic quality.
