Dallas Couples JR & Sue Ellen - Swoonalicious Appreciation Thread

Somehow, in my head, I don't see them being married again, but acting as they are, with Sue Ellen retaining her rightful (one and only) Mrs JR Ewing title. Simply because he thinks of her as his wife regardless of marriage and she sees him as her husband. Although JR wants to remarry Sue Ellen assures him that there is no need at that time because of how she they both feel about each other. I like the idea of her maintaining her own home. JR could live at Southfork and come and stay with her whenever he wants, although as yet she won't let him completely move in. I envisage lots of delicious things happening in her house, sexy time as well as just cuddles and shoulder massages on the couch after a long day. They are each others partner in life and confidante excluding all other. JR is in complete awe of her and she has found an arrangement which means he is always coming back for more.

I think I just wrote a fanfic

You know this does perfectly address @Karin Schill ’s question about the bathtub.

I asked a question about a bathtub? :confuse:
I don't remember that at all...

But never mind, I see we have more interesting discussions going on! :pals:

I think if you take JR/SE away from Southfork and give them their own place you remove a lot of the drama that comes from having a big family living under one roof. I think that's a main reason why Dallas TNT didn't feel like Dallas anymore. Because you had lost that family feeling that you had when they were all living together. The dinner table scenes were great because there was so much tension in the family that you knew something could happen at any moment.

Then as for what would happen between JR/SE if Linda hadn't wanted to leave the show.
Well I think eventually JR/SE would have found their way back to each other. I think "JR Returns" is proof that it was always in the cards. I think I read an interview with one of the actors once who claimed that Katzman got some inspiration for some of the JR/SE bantering from his real life marriage so he obviously had a soft spot for them.

I do think it would be difficult for JR/SE to move past her shooting him. Even if it was a passion crime because he threw Nick Pearce over the balcony and Sue Ellen later changed her mind and saved him from Nick Pearce's dad, it would be strange if it didn't affect their relationship in some way. Speaking of which, I agree with @Goldie that the scene is filled with JR/SE chemistry. In fact the way JR suggest they should go out and have dinner with John Ross reminds me of the way he used to court her back when they were divorced. Even Cally who was watching them from the balcony could tell there was something between them.

I think Sue Ellen would probably remarry JR eventually, but she would have doubts about it since the last time she did remarry him things went sour pretty quickly. So she wouldn't want things to turn sour again and would probably prefer to just be in a relationship with JR rather than being married again. But JR would want her to be his wife and eventually she would agree because she does love JR and he loves her. Besides her mama did raise her to be a wife.

If a woman shoots a man and there’s still a chance they get back together at some point later on, that has to be true love in my book

No I’m sorry I need to pick up on the shooting.

The shooting is focussed on because it is a physical activity, but LOOK AT WHAT HE DID TO HER THAT SHE FORGAVE HIM. MANY MANY THINGS THAT WERE WORSE.

This is making me sad now

And another thing. The writing by this stage was really bad. Sue Ellen would NEVER have hurt JR in normal years, nor would he have ‘killed her’ as she feared in that episode.

Im in a huff now.

Different people had to be writing the show at this point obviously in the later years cause I agree that in the earlier years I can’t see Sue Ellen fearing JR would’ve killed her either. And that’s something he never would’ve done despite their differences. Even at their worst moments I don’t think she had to ever worry about that happening.

I agree. Too much focus is put on the shooting. Even right after that you could still see the closeness between them in their interactions. I think they would forgive each other just about anything, as they often did

I blame it on the writing by that point. It was patchy and inconsistent and ignored the relationship they had which had been built into the story and had been accepted by the fans for years. Sue Ellen would never have shot JR and he would never have made her fear for her life. The writers just wanted a sensational cliffhanger but it failed in my opinion because it just wasn’t realistic or true to their characters. Then, in the following season, the relationship goes back to where it had been before with them looking at each other with a sense of real regret- and love. Linda once said that she felt the writers had run out of ideas for the character and that was one of the reasons she decided to leave. She’s a smart lady and was completely right. In other hands, though, there could have been loads of mileage in the character focusing on Sue Ellen developing further in business and, ultimately, a satisfying reconciliation with JR. Wasted opportunity:)

So, I’m going to kick off again with this. Kimberley Cryder? Really? Other than the crap writing and the fact that Linda wanted to leave, why in the hell? JR didn’t love her, didn’t even like her I reckon but was prepared to divorce Sue Ellen just to get his hands on West Star which he showed he could have done anyway when he confronted Kimberley’s father. Ridiculous or what? Anyway, my point is (getting there) do you remember that scene where JR sets up a lovely lunch for Nick Pearce to tell him he’s free to get on it with Sue Ellen but Nick walks out and so he invites the secretaries in instead and his face? Knowing he’s just given the green light to Nick and Sue Ellen having an affair. Another classic :)

It is the worst storyline and once they were parted for that last time, Dallas went drastically down hill. I can’t forgive the writers for that. It was awful and worse than that, heartbreaking.

Im sorry but I didn’t watch that part of the story more than the first time. I couldn’t bear it. I mean JR practically giving Sue Ellen away to someone else? He would never have done that and I don’t know what they were thinking he would achieve.

What do you mean by the look on his face? I’m sorry I have blanked it out completely. Can’t deal with it. Did he look sad?

I couldn’t stand the Kimberly Cryder storyline. I found it quite boring actually. And J.R. with Kimberly was even more boring. The writing at this point was obviously the problem. It just seemed like a different show. And I think J.R. and Sue Ellen suffered because of it. Thankfully when I think of them these later seasons are not what comes to mind

Yes he looked sad for a moment, Sarah. It’s really good acting. Nick walks out after JR basically says crack on and have an affair with her. So, JR invites the secretaries in to eat the lunch themselves and they’re all having a laugh but then he stops, just for a few seconds, and looks really regretful, before shaking it off. If he had only changed his mind and gone after Sue Ellen at that point it would have been so much truer to the characters’ real feelings and much better for us fans :(

Thank you. It is times like this I really detest his behaviour and want to tell him to stop being such an arsehole.

What do you think he hoped to achieve by ‘giving’ Sue Ellen to Nick??

A quick divorce so he could marry rotten Kimberley and take over West Star. Sad thing is that just before this he and Sue Ellen were getting on better than ever so the change in direction didn’t make sense at all. It was, I think, the writers preparing for Linda’s exit but, yet again in the later years, they got it completely wrong :(

The scene where J.R. gives Nick his blessing to see Sue Ellen is from “Marriage On The Rocks.” And yes if you watch closely in the later scene with the secretaries he does look regretful for a second after they all stop laughing
