Now that JR has physically reacted to Ray it is now time to get JR and Sue Ellen on the same page. As for little Miss Miranda I have a feeling JR is going to shut her down hard and then go for the jugular with the rodeo twit.
Actually, I would love to see Sue Ellen put the rodeo twit in his place with just a few words and a look.

YES TO ALL OF THAT.
Ray deserved it. I hope now he has released some anger that he will talk to his wife. He needs to remember he loves her.............. and that what he did with Kristen was WAY worse, and she has always forgiven him.
And whatever is wrong with Jerk has just taken away his filter. It's NOT what's making him behave like a bastard. He just IS.
I want to give Sue Ellen a big hug, and I'm happy she has Pam to support her.
This not wanting to strangle Pam is REALLY freaking me out now.

Part Forty-one:

***

"Is she alright?"

Kiefer looked at his client and shook his head. "I honestly don't know. I understand Sue Ellen is your daughter and you're worried about her, but we have bigger problems right now. The tape the DA gave me is very damaging."

"Yes. Well, you knew from the beginning that Barnes lied."

"I suspected. I didn't know. Mrs. Sheppard, we're going to need to make a deal. I'm afraid you'll have to do some time. The tape proves malice, but it also proves emotional distress. That may mitigate your punishment."

"Fine," Patricia shrugged. "I don't really care how much time I have to do. Please just find out Sue Ellen's condition. I need to know if she's going to be alright. That's all I care about now."

***

"Well Mama?" Bobby asked. "What's this all about?"

Bobby and Gary had managed to separate JR a s Ray. Lucy had come in with John Ross in the middle of the melee and been sent upstairs with strict Instructions not to come down until she was sent for. All four Ewing sons now sat around Miss Ellie in the living room waiting for her to tell them why she'd called them together.

"Your father…" Ellie paused and took a deep breath. "Jock is a hard man. You've all always known that. He's pigheaded and stubborn and can be very selfish. Always has been."

"Yes," JR agreed. "But you didn't ask us all to come here just to tell us something we all already knew."

"No," Ellie said softly. "I didn't."

She stood up and walked over to the bar, fixing herself a drink. Ellie almost never drank alcohol until dinner time, but she needed a little courage to help her continue.

"Jock and I were awful parents," she finally spoke again. "I hope you understand that I loved all my boys very much. But Jock… he had very strong convictions about how you all should be raised. JR was his firstborn. He insisted I back off and stop mothering him. He intended for JR to carry his legacy and so I allowed him to take over raising him. Then I compensated by over-mothering Gary. By the time Bobby came along, we had already done so much damage to JR and Gary that I looked at Bobby as my last chance to get it right."

"Bobby and JR - everything you said to me and your father about pitting the two of you against one another is true. For Jock, it was about proving he'd raised JR to be a winner. For me it was about proving the child I raised was just as strong as the one he raised. And I… I stupidly blamed JR for running off Gary. It was easier for me than admitting I should have stepped in and protected him."

"Mama," Gary spoke up, "why bring all this up now? And what does he," Gary pointed at Ray," "have to do with anything?"

"Please, Gary," Ellie whispered in a broken voice, "just let me do this at my own pace. I promise it will all make sense when I'm finished. What I'm going to say is going to be so painful for you all to have to hear. But it has to be done. And I need you all to understand that I'm not doing this to hurt you; I'm doing it to save you."

***

"No, Lucy," Pam sighed into the phone, "just do what Miss Ellie asked and stay upstairs until it's over. Uncle Bobby and I will explain it all later. I promise. Alright. Talk to you soon."

"What happened?"

Pam put the phone down and turned her gaze to Sue Ellen. "Miss Ellie called all the Ewing brothers to Southfork. ALL of them."

"Including Ray?"

"Yes. And when Lucy and John Ross got home, JR and Ray were rolling around fighting on the floor with Bobby and Gary trying to break them up."

"Oh my God," tears started streaming down Sue Ellen's face again.

"It'll all be okay," Pam reached out and patted her friend's hand. "JR is so worried about you and under so much stress. He probably just snapped. It's hard for Bobby to accept Ray as his brother. It must be pure torture for JR."

"No, Pam," Sue Ellen sobbed, "you don't understand!"

"What?" Pam sat up straight in her chair, "what don't I understand?"

Sue Ellen couldn't answer. She cried violently, the force of her sobs shaking her whole body.

"Sue Ellen!" Pam stood up and sat down on the edge of the hospital bed. "What is it?"

"Oh, Pam. I finally did it. I completely and totally destroyed my marriage. And I've probably destroyed the entire family too!"

***
Miss Ellie took a deep breath and continued.

"Jock and I had a difficult marriage from the beginning. I married him to save my home. He married me because I was a prize he wanted - something to chase, win, and possess. I hated his stupid fued with Digger Barnes. I hated how he ran around with other women then came home expecting me to have his dinner on the table and his children taken care of. Bobby, I don't know how much you remember, but I have always been well aware that both Gary and JR knew about Jock's other women. In the early days, he didn't make much of an effort to hide his infidelity. Years went by. I was so miserable that I wasn't able to function as a proper mother to any of you."

"I only threatened divorce once - when Jock brought one of his women into this house. I went so far as to pack all Jock's things and speak to a divorce attorney. Jock talked me out of it. He promised to change, to stop running around with other women and to start treating me like a wife and not a prize. I gave him another chance. Back in those days, a divorced woman was a scarlet woman. I wasn't sure I could make it on my own - especially not with three little boys to care for."

"It's important for you all to know that from that point on, your father kept his promise to me. He stopped cheating and he treated me with respect and care. I fell deeply in love with him. And I love him still. But now…"

She paused and took a sip of her drink.

"Ray, I knew Jock had had an affair with your mother when you first came to Southfork. I always suspected…"

"Oh, Miss Ellie…" Ray whispered brokenly.

"I never pushed it because deep in my heart I didn't want to know the truth. But the news that you're Jock's son doesn't come as a complete shock to me."

"Wait!" Gary jumped out of his seat. "What?!"

"It's true, Gary," Ellie told him. "Jock had an affair with Ray's mother during the war and Ray is the result of that affair."

"How long have you known?" Gary demanded "How long have all of you known?"

"I found out this morning," Ellie answered. "Ray has known for a couple of days, JR and Bobby since last night. Jock has known for months."

"Mama, how did you find out?" Bobby asked her.

"Harv Smithfield came by this morning. He told me everything."

"Why?" JR asked. "He's Daddy's lawyer. He could get into a lot of trouble."

"Yes. He did it anyway. He felt that it was necessary because Jock…"

"Jock what?" JR pushed her.

"I'm sorry, Boys. I don't know how to tell you this except to just come right out and say it. Your father is a very ill man. And that's why he's acting so...horribly. Boys - your father… he thinks he's dying."

Shot Through the Heart

Part Forty-two:

***

"Oh, Sue Ellen…" Pam shook her head and squeezed the other woman's hand tightly. "I'm so, so sorry."

"He'll never forgive me! And now...now that I'm pregnant again, he won't ever let me go, no matter how much he hates me!"

"Oh, honey, JR doesn't hate you."

"Of course he does! I slept with his brother! I should have never told him!"

"You had to tell him, Sue Ellen. Keeping that secret would have destroyed you and your marriage."

"Pam, I'm so scared! And weak! I am lying here knowing I have this tiny little person inside of me but all I want is a drink! God help me, I don't even want it."

"Sue Ellen, what do you mean you don't want it? Of course you do! That baby was conceived out of your and JR's love!"

"Love," Sue Ellen laughed bitterly. "If he loves me then where is he? He can't even stand to look at me!"

"Alright," Pam leaned forward and kissed her sister-in-law on the cheek, "you listen to me. You're a hell of a lot stronger than you think you are. I know this hurts, but it isn't the end of the world. You made a mistake. But you were drunk and neglected and you had no idea Ray was JR's brother. And JR…"

"JR what?"

"He doesn't hate you, Sue Ellen," Pam said softly. "He knew last night...but this morning...oh, Sue Ellen. If you could have seen how scared he was, how worried. All that was on his mind was you and whether or not you were okay. Bobby had to physically restrain him because he wouldn't let go of your hand long enough for the doctors to take care of you. JR is a jerk and he's mad. But he loves you so much. I've seen it with my own eyes. You're right. He won't ever let you go. But it's not because of the baby. It's because he loves you so much that he can't live without you."

Sue Ellen shook her head, her eyes full of sad doubt. "I don't think so, Pam."

"Then you're wrong," Pam told her. "And you have two choices, Sue Ellen. You can lay here in this bed and wallow in your misery, think about drinking and harming that baby and yourself or…"

"Or what?"

"Or you can straighten up and fight for the man you love."

"Fight for him how?"

"Well," Pam winked at her, "it's like JR always says: we all use what we have, honey."

***

JR was drunk.

Miss Ellie had told them everything.

It had happened during Sue Ellen's trial.

JR had assumed that Jock stopped coming to court everyday because he was angry. Turns out it was because he was sick.

It was a heart attack. Minor enough that Jock thought he just had a bad case of indigestion. But then the headaches had started and he'd gone to see his doctor.

They'd discovered blood clots and determined Jock had had a series of mini strokes. The strokes had affected the area of his brain that controlled emotion and impulse.

Jock became obsessed with the idea he was going to die and had set about securing his legacy with naked ruthlessness. Not that any of that excised Jock's basic character flaws, but at least it explained his recent insanity.

After Miss Ellie finished talking to all four Ewing boys, she'd sent Gary and Bobby out of the room. She'd told him and Ray that Jock knew about the one night stand, that she knew about it, and that they needed to work it out.

JR had listened silently as Ray told him that he and Sue Ellen had both been drunk, that Sue Ellen had cried and kicked him out after, and that she'd refused to even speak to him for weeks.

JR hadn't said one word. He'd let Ray finish then stood up, walked straight out the front door, and driven to the nearest bar where he'd been drowning his sorrows for hours.

He knew he needed to go back to the hospital and check on Sue Ellen, but he couldn't face her yet.

He remembered that night.

She'd come to him. She had wanted him.

And he'd rejected her. It had disturbed him so much to see his wife drunk and demanding sexual attention. He didn't know how to handle it. He'd told her he'd buy her a puppy and stormed away.

He'd left her there, standing in the driveway in her nightgown, screaming and begging him to come back.

And that's how Ray had found her. Rejected. Discarded. Ignored.

She slept with Ray because she had desperately needed JR, but he'd turned away from her in the cruelest way possible.

Ray was the first time she cheated.

And it wasn't her fault. JR knew he was solely to blame.

And he just couldn't face her.

***

"No, Pam. I refuse to get involved."

Pam growled under her breath and narrowed her eyes on Bobby's face."I'm not asking you to get involved. I'm asking you to go get JR and take him to Sue Ellen. That's it."

"That's it?" Bobby repeated incredulously. "That's a damn lot! You have no idea what he's going through. You have no idea what ANY of us are going through! I just found out my Daddy is a very sick man. Do you even care, Pam?"

"Of course I care!" Pam snapped. "How could you even ask me that?"

"Because you haven't asked one thing about how he's doing or even how I feel about all of this. You're obsessed with Sue Ellen! Pam that baby is hers. Not yours. Whatever happens to it is up to her and her alone!"

"Bobby…" Pam hesitated for a minute and took a deep breath. "I know you love your father. But is there anything you can do for him right now?"

"No," Bobby growled in frustration.

"And you love your brother too, right?"

"Of course!"

"Well, there IS something you can do for him. He's angry and hurt and probably feels guilty. And he's refusing to face up to his responsibility to his wife. She's scared and alone and she may do something incredibly rash that she'll regret for the rest of her life. And if she does, JR will never forgive himself. And Sue Ellen will be so eaten up with guilt that she'll never recover. We can't help Jock. We can help JR and Sue Ellen. And we should."

Bobby looked at her and shook his head. "Alright, Pam. You're right. I'll go get him."

"Thank you, Bobby."

"I'm sorry for what I said about the baby."

"It's alright.I know you're hurting too."

"Yes. I am. But I shouldn't take it out on you."

Pam wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him tightly. "I love you, Bobby."

"I love you too, Pam."

***

JR put his key in the door and stumbled inside. He needed a shower and some coffee. He needed to go see his wife but he couldn't show himself to her in her current condition.

"JR? Is that you?"

JR's eyes narrowed as they struggled to adjust to the dark. "Who's there?"

"It's me, Miranda."

"What are you doing here?" He asked her. "Lucy took John Ross to the ranch hours ago."

"Yes. I stayed in case you needed me."

"You're the nanny and the kid isn't here so why in the hell would I need you?"

Miranda walked up to him and stood so close that her body was almost touching his. "You've been so nice to me. I know you're worried and under a lot of stress. I thought maybe you might need a friendly ear."

JR let his eyes rake over her. She was dressed in tight, short white shorts and a thin white tank top. It was obvious she wasn't wearing a bra. Her nipples pushed against the thin material of her shirt, tempting him to reach out and cup her young, round, firm breasts. "A friendly ear?" JR asked. "Is that the only part of you you're offering up?"

Miranda raised her face to meet his eyes and licked her lower lip seductively. "I suppose that depends on what parts of me you want."

JR growled, reached out, and tangled his hands in her long dark hair. He brought his face down to rest against her neck and inhaled her scent deeply. "I'm drunk," he told her.

She brought her arms up to wrap around his neck. She pressed herself against him and whispered into his ear, "that's okay, JR. I don't mind."

JR groaned and dropped his hands to cup her firm bottom. "You're so young and so sexy."

She giggled and flicked her tongue out to tease the sensitive skin of his earlobe. "You're sexy too. I want you, JR."

JR closed his eyes and fought every instinct in his body. She was young and beautiful and he was drunk and turned on.He admitted to himself that he wanted her.

Except he didn't. Not really. He wanted a physical release. She was a warm and willing body, but that's all she was.

"JR," she moaned, reaching down to cup his manhood. "Please let me please you."

JR swallowed hard, closed his eyes, and pushed her forcefully away from his body. "Get out," his voice was low and gutteral. "And don't you dare come back."

"What? Why? You want me…"

"What I want I could do for myself and not hurt my wife. Leave. Before I throw you out myself."

He watched her as she silently collected her things and moved towards the door. "I would have let you," she told him. "But I'm really glad you didn't."

She opened the door and was stunned to see Bobby standing on the other side, his hand in the air poised to knock.

"Excuse me," she muttered, brushing past him.

"JR," Bobby snarled, "I can't believe you! Sue Ellen is in the hospital…"

"I didn't do a damn thing with that girl!" JR protested. "What the hell are you doing here?"

"I came to take you to your wife."

"I'm drunk," JR informed him. "I need a shower and some coffee."

"JR... are you telling me nothing happened between you and the nanny?"

"Nothing important," JR growled. "She offered. I was tempted. But I came to my senses and kicked her out. Not that it's any of your business anyway. Are you going to drive me to the hospital or not?"

"Yes," Bobby sighed and shut the front door. "I am."

"Then put on a pot of coffee. I'll be out of the shower in a few minutes."

"Alright, JR."

JR strode into the bedroom and took a deep breath. It had cost him his satisfaction and his pride, but he'd resisted temptation and turned down what Miranda had so willingly offered him.

He loved his wife. And he was going to go to her and make sure she knew it.

***

Jock opened the door and narrowed his eyes when he saw who was on the other side. "Finally come to your senses and decide to come beg me to come home?"

"No," Ellie told him evenly. "I came to tell you that I know everything. I know about Ray. I know about Sue Ellen sleeping with Ray. And I know you haven't been well."

"How…" Jock backed up and let her into the apartment. "How did you find out?"

"That doesn't matter, Jock," Ellie sighed heavily. "What does matter is this. I love you. I always will. But I love my children more. JR and Sue Ellen have both made some very questionable decisions. But they love one another. JR will never be happy without her. She is his wife and the mother of his children and I won't have you drag her name through the mud in a vain attempt to run her out of his life. Pam and Bobby are very happy together and I won't tolerate you running her down simply because you don't like her family. Gary has built a life for himself and Valene in California and you're going to accept that's what he wants and support him. And Ray Krebbs is a fine man who loves you and our family and you will NOT use him to hurt the rest of us."

"You done?" Jock snarled.

"No. I most certainly am not. You're going to do exactly what your doctors tell you to do. You're going to retire from Ewing Oil and give total control to Bobby and JR."

"Why would I want to do that?"

"Because stress will make your health worse and you're going to do whatever you have to in order to get better."

"You have a lot of nerve coming over here trying to order me around!"

"I'm your wife, Jock. I love you. You're going to listen to me or you're going to die alone. Your choice."

"Mother of his children?"

"What?" Ellie snapped. "What are you talking about?"

"You said Sue Ellen was the mother of JR's children. Not child. Children."

Ellie took a deep breath and squared her shoulders. "Sue Ellen is pregnant, Jock."

"You sure it's JR's?"

"Of course it is!"

"Huh. Imagine that."

"Jock! Would you concentrate!"

"Sure, Ellie. Come on in and have a drink with me. We have some talking to do."

***

"JR?"

JR turned his head to look at Bobby, his eyes wide and wounded. "Why would you tell me that?"

"Because someone needed to," Bobby said lowly. "She's terrified. She thinks you hate her and that if she keeps the baby you won't let her go no matter how much you despise her. She thinks you'll go back to the way you were before and that her life will be miserable - married to a man that she loves but doesn't love her back."

"She told all that to Pam?"

"Yes."

"And that's why she hasn't told me about the baby?"

"Yes."

JR inhaled deeply and cursed himself under his breath. "Alright, Bobby. I'll set her straight. You can go on home."

"You sure, JR?"

"Yeah. I'll call you tomorrow. And Bobby?"

"Yeah?"

"I swear to you nothing happened with the nanny."

"I believe you, JR."

JR watched as his brother walked down the hall and towards the exit. He made his way to the nurses' station on Sue Ellen's floor and stopped and nodded. "How is Mrs. Ewing tonight?"

"She's hanging in there, Mr. Ewing," the nurse smiled at him. "Vitals are all good. She should be discharged in the morning."

JR nodded and walked to Sue Ellen's room, opened the door, and walked inside.

"Listen here, Miss Texas," he moved quickly to her bedside. "I've been mad as hell all day And drinking all night. I'm still a little drunk and I'm bone tired and I don't feel like talking about you and Ray Krebbs. But I love you. That hasn't changed and it won't. Can you please just cut me some damn slack and let me be with you and comfort you without playing twenty questions? I promise we'll talk about everything later. But please, just give me a break tonight."

Sue Ellen studied his face and chewed nervously at her bottom lip. He looked tired and haggard. And hurt. His eyes were full of pain...but she also saw love. Real love. "Alright, JR."

"Alright?".JR repeated, surprised she hadn't protested.."Just like that?"

"Yes," she smiled at him. "Just like that."

"Woman you.,." He stopped himself and growled under his breath. "Scoot over."

Sue Ellen moved to the edge of her bed. He got in beside her, wrapped her in his arms, and pulled her close against him. "I do love you Sue Ellen."

"Good," she rested her head against his chest. "I love you too."

And now all feels right in my world again.

Happy JR didn't give in to Miranda (but NOT happy at what a close call it was).
But can she tell him the sadfle tramp's part in it now so JR can finally crush him before he really hurts Sue Ellen.

Loved Miss Ellie laying down the law with Jerk. But he doesn't deserve her.

I'm still an update behind. I tend to be most of the time as I read the updates at night before falling asleep and you usually post in the mornings before I have had time to comment on the previous chapter. So sorry for my lack of feedback.

Anyway here's some thoughts. First of all Kristin is super annoying and Dusty too.

Jock is acting like a jackass too. But I am guessing it's because he is sick.
I think it's nice that this story includes Jock as we rarely see him in fanfics but I also preferred Miss Ellie's second husband Clayton to Jock. Probably because I watched the end of the show when Miss Ellie was together with Clayton first.

Is the baby Sue Ellen expecting JR's?
I am assuming it is but I am not quite sure how much time that has passed since they got back together. :confuse:

Finally it doesn't make any sense for Pam and Bobby to look into adoption at this point since the first two miscarriages was due to accidents, falling off the hayloft and falling off a horse. Pam thought she couldn't have kids because Digger had neurofibromatosis but then she found out right before JR was shot that Digger wasn't her real father. So she didn't have the disease. On the show Pam didn't find out that she would probably never be able to carry a baby to full term until after Rebecca had come back. It was after that they started talking about adoption. But that happened after JR was shot. So your timeline breaks off before that happened, meaning that Bobby and Pam could probably have a baby if they tried.

Just thought I'd mention that.

Part Forty-three:

***.

"How's your pain?"

Sue Ellen looked up at the doctor and shrugged. "The headache is still there, but it's not as bad as it was yesterday."

"Do you feel well enough to go home?"

"Yes. I think I would be more comfortable there."

Dr. Franklin straightened and turned to face JR. "If I discharge her, will there be someone with her at all times to help her and keep an eye on her?"

"Absolutely," JR promised him. "I'll stay with her. And my niece and sister-in-law have also offered to help."

"Alright," Dr. Franklin sighed. "You can go home. But you come straight back to the ER if the headache gets worse or if there are any blackouts or changes in vision. Do you understand?"

"Yes, Dr. Franklin," Sue Ellen nodded. "I understand."

"I'll start your discharge paperwork," he said, turning to leave the room. "You should be out of here soon."

"JR?" Sue Ellen called his name softly once they were alone again. "Are you alright?"

JR moved away from the window and sat down on the edge of her hospital bed. They'd been awake for hours. JR had laid with her in the bed, holding her in his arms, and quietly told her all about Jock and his illness. Sue Ellen had listened and comforted him. She hadn't brought up Ray again and JR hadn't told her about Miranda.

"I'll be fine honey," he finally told her. "I love my Daddy. You know I do. But I don't feel the same way Mama and Bobby do about all this."

"What do you mean?"

"I know he's sick. But that's no excuse for what he did. Daddy always has been a hard, cruel man. Those strokes gave him an excuse to show his true colors and he took advantage of it."

"Maybe," Sue Ellen told him. "But he's still your father. You need to try to forgive him."

"It's not about forgiveness, Sue Ellen. It's about being smart enough to know that he meant to do every single thing he did. I have to protect you and John Ross and the ba.." he stopped himself just in time, not wanting to reveal to her that he knew she was pregnant, "and Ewing Oil."

Sue Ellen reached up and gently stroked his cheek. "Alright, JR."

JR smiled, captured her hand, and brought it to his mouth for a kiss. "Do you want me to have Pam bring John Ross back to the condo? Or would you rather leave him at the ranch so you can rest?"

"Have Pam bring him home. Miranda can help me with him."

JR grimaced and stood up. "Honey, about Miranda…"

"What about her?"

"She doesn't work for us anymore."

"What? What happened, JR?"

He took a deep breath and dropped his gaze to the floor. He had to tell her. There was no way to put it off anymore.

***

"What's wrong?"

Pam looked up and saw Bobby coming into the nursery. "What do you mean?"

"I know you, Pam," Bobby sighed, watching her dress John Ross. "You've been stewing about something all morning."

Pam smiled a small smile and shook her head. He really DID know her. "I'm worried about Lucy. I know finding out about Ray being a Ewing was a shock for her, but her reaction has been much more severe than it should be. She won't even come out of her room."

"Yeah, I was surprised how upset she was too. But she just needs some time to adjust. She'll be okay."

"I hope so," Pam finished dressing John Ross and picked him up. "I've also been thinking about the situation with JR and the nanny."

"Now, Pam, I told you JR denied anything happened and that I believe him."

"Yes," Pam sighed. "I don't think JR is lying about sleeping with her. It's just that the whole thing is so strange."

"Strange how?"

"Miranda has only been working for Sue Ellen for a very short time. As far as I know, she hasn't spent much time with JR and I'm pretty sure she's never been alone with him before last night."

"So?"

"Come on Bobby. I mean I suppose that JR is attractive to some women. But…"

"But what?"

"She hung around that condo all day, waiting for him to come home so that she could seduce him? She barely knew him. It just doesn't make sense."

"I don't know, Pam," Bobby said thoughtfully. "JR is famous, rich, and powerful. With Sue Ellen in the hospital and everyone knowing they were fighting, maybe Miranda just saw an opportunity to try to land a rich sugar daddy."

"Maybe...but…"

Whatever she was going to say was cut off by the ringing of the telephone. Bobby turned, walked out into the hallway, and answered. "Hello? No. I haven't talked to him this morning. Yeah. Okay. I'll let him know. Okay."

"Who was that?" Pam asked, coming up behind him.

"Harv Smithfield. Daddy wants to meet with me and JR at Ewing Oil this afternoon."

"What about?"

"I have no idea. But I can't say I'm looking forward to listening to anything my father has to say."

"You're an idiot!" Dusty raged. "I told you to wait! To earn Sue Ellen's trust and give JR a chance to get used to you!"

"It was the perfect time," Miranda told him. "Sue Ellen was away from home in the hospital. They'd been fighting. He'd been drinking. If he was going to cheat on her he would have done it. But he didn't."

"Do you think that means anything?" Dusty laughed bitterly. "You go back over there. Make it clear that you want him but that you won't pressure him. He'll crack."

"No," Miranda said softly. "Besides, once he tells Sue Ellen what happened, she won't ever allow me back there."

"He won't tell Sue Ellen," Dusty informed her. "He'll keep it all to himself and keep his options open."

"Mr. Farlow, I appreciate everything you did for my brother. Truly. When he met you in physical rehabilitation therapy after his car accident, he desperately needed a friend and support. I agreed to do this for you because you told me you and Sue Ellen were true loves and that JR was evil and abusive. But that's not true. The Ewings may have had problems, but they love each other. JR is kind and loving to both his wife and his son. Sue Ellen loves him. You need to stop this sick obsessing and let her go. You aren't her true love. JR Ewing is."

Dusty's eyes darkened with pure fury. "Get out," he snarled at her. "Before I climb out of this chair and throw you out."

"Fine," Miranda moved past him to the door. "But I hope you'll come to your senses and walk away from this crazy scheme while you still can. If JR finds out what you're doing, he'll destroy you."

Dusty picked a vase up from the table beside him and threw it with all his strength. Damn her. She was ruining everything!

Dusty didn't see the shadow in the corner of the hallway. He didn't see the stricken look on his father's face.

Clayton leaned against the wall and took a deep breath. Dusty was out of control.

Something had to be done. Miranda was right - JR would destroy Dusty.

JR would destroy them all.

"You sure you're comfortable on the couch? It seems like the bedroom would be better."

"I don't want to lay in bed all day," Sue Ellen insisted. "If that's what I wanted, I would have just stayed in the hospital."

JR nodded and sat down beside her. "Okay, honey."

He put his arm around her shoulders and scowled when he felt her body stiffen. She hadn't said much after he'd told her about Miranda. Tears had welled up in her eyes but she'd controlled them, refusing to cry. Before they'd had a chance to talk about it further a nurse had come in with her discharge papers. She'd been distant and silent in the car duong the trip home.

"I didn't cheat on you, Sue Ellen."

"I believe you, JR," her voice was cold and flat.

"Then why the silent treatment?"

"You said you were tempted," she grumbled.

JR chuckled lightly and shook his head. "I'm a man, Sue Ellen. Miranda is young and beautiful and she was offering to please me. Of course I was tempted."

Sue Ellen swallowed hard and turned her head away from him.

"But…" his voice was low and silky as he cupped her face in his hand and gently forced her to face him, "I didn't want her. I wanted you. She would have been nothing more than a poor substitute and I turned her down and came straight to you, honey. And that's the difference between who I have been in the past and who I am now, Sue Ellen. I know you're the only woman who can truly satisfy me. And I won't ever put another woman in your place in my bed."

Sue Ellen's eyes softened and she brought her hands up to tangle in his hair. "Still, JR? You still feel that way even knowing about Ray?"

JR dipped his head and captured her mouth in a soft, searching kiss. "Yes. And if we're going to talk about Krebbs now is as good a time as any I guess. Sue Ellen…"

JR cursed when the phone rang. He stood up, walked to the phone, snatched up the receiver, and barked out a "What?!"

Sue Ellen smiled to herself as she listened to his side of the conversation. He was clearly irritated that they had been interrupted. "Yeah. When. Hell. No. I'll be there. Hey, can Pam bring John Ross home and stay with Sue Ellen until I get back? Good. Okay."

He put the phone down and walked back to the couch. "I'm sorry, honey. I have to go to Ewing Oil. Daddy wants to see me and Bobby. Mama will be there too."

"It's alright, JR. We can finish our talk later."

"Yes," he put his arm around her and pulled her close. She rested her head on his chest and sighed contentedly.

"JR?"

"Yes?"

"I…" she stopped herself. She wanted to tell him about the baby. But she couldn't just yet. Not until the situation with Ray was handled. "I love you so much."

"I know, honey," he kissed the top of her head and tightened his arms around her. "I love you too."

***

"What are you doing here?"

Donna sucked in a deep breath and looked Ray in the eyes. "You haven't been taking my calls, Ray. I've been worried about you."

"I'm fine," he told her.

"May I come in?"

Ray moved to the side to allow her to come into the house. "Want some coffee?"

"No thank you. Ray, what's wrong?" She got straight to the point."

Ray moved past her and sank down into a chair at the kitchen table. "A lot has happened since the last time I saw you, Donna."

"Like what?" She asked, taking a seat beside him.

"I… Donna…"

"Just tell me, Ray."

"You may not feel the same way about me after I tell you the truth."

"Oh, Ray. I'm in love with you. That won't change."

"We'll see," he growled, taking a gulp of his coffee. We'll see."

***

Lucy flushed the toilet and stood up on shaking legs.

She was so sick. She hadn't been able to eat since she'd found out about Ray.

Her own uncle.

Incest.

God it was disgusting.

How could she ever face him again? How could she ever face anyone?

Another wave of nausea swept through her body and she sank back to her knees in front of the toilet.

She sobbed violently as she vomited.

Her life as she knew it was over.

There was no going back.

***

"He missed you."

Sue Ellen hugged John Ross tightly and smiled at her sister-in-law. "I missed him too."

"Have you thought about whether or not you want to hire a new nanny?"

"Yes," Sue Ellen growled. "The main requirements for employment will be that she is over seventy and weighs at least 300 pounds."

Pam burst out laughing and shook her head. "How are things going between you and JR?"

"Just fine. I think. We still haven't talked about Ray, but I believe he forgives me."

"I'm so glad to hear that. The two of you have come so far. You deserve to be happy."

Sue Ellen smiled and walked over to our John Ross on the floor with his toys. "What do you think Jock wants to see JR and Bobby about?"

"I don't know. But I'm afraid whatever it is, it isn't good."

"Me too, Pam. Me too."

"Well, we'll know soon enough. I wish Lucy would have come with me today."

"I'm honestly surprised to hear she's taking the news about Ray so badly. Out of all of us, she's always been the one who has always been able to adjust to drama and go with the flow."

"Yes," Pam agreed. "It doesn't make sense for her to be so upset."

"Maybe we should go to Southfork and get her. Take her out for a nice meal and see if we can get her to talk to us."

"No way, Sue Ellen," Pam said immediately. "You just got out of the hospital and JR would kill me for dragging his concussed and pregnant wife out the house….what?" She asked, her voice suddenly concerned. All of the color had drained from Sue Ellen's face and she looked as if she might pass out. "What's wrong."

Sue Ellen sank down into a nearby chair and shook her head slowly from side to side. "He knows?" She choked out.

"What?" Pam was totally confused. "Who knows what?"

"JR knows about the baby?"

"Oh," Pam turned her head away and silently cursed herself for her carelessness. "Sue Ellen…"

"How long has he known?"

Pam sat down and reached out to hold Sue Ellen's hand. "The doctor told him when we first got to the hospital, while you were still unconscious. Please don't be angry with him. He just wanted you to tell him when you were ready."

"No wonder," Sue Ellen said bitterly, snatching her hand away.

"No wonder what?"

"No wonder he's been so sweet and loving and forgiving. He wants this baby, Pam. Not me."

"Sue Ellen, that's just not true…"

"Don't you dare tell me what's true and what isn't. I know my husband. I know him better than anyone else. This baby is the only thing keeping him with me. And I promise you one thing, Pam. I won't go back to a miserable marriage. Never again. I'll take both my babies and leave. I swear to God I will."

Oh god, here we go again.

Since Sue Ellen IS already concussed can we just bang their heads together.
I REALLY wish they'd talked earlier.

Very happy Clayton is around now. I hope he can give that dickhead son of his a kick up the arse cos he is out of control.

Feel really bad for poor Lucy here, she has no-one to support her.

What would've been the 80's version of Jerry Springer? Maybe that's an option.

"No."

Bobby looked over at his brother and groaned inwardly at the look of determination on his face.

"What do you mean no?" Jock demanded angrily.

"You're brain's not so damaged that you don't understand the meaning of the word no is it?" JR said icily.

"Listen here you piece of…"

"Stop!" Bobby stood up and held up his hand to interrupt his father's angry response. He looked over and studied JR's face carefully. It was stunning to hear JR talk to Jock that way. For all of their lives, JR had treated Jock with a reverence and respect that he never gave to another living soul. "JR and I need a few minutes alone," Bobby said finally.

Harv Smithfield nodded, grateful for the opportunity to separate JR and Jock for a few minutes. "Come on Jock," he said, standing up. "We'll be right outside."

Bobby waited until the other men were out of the room and the door was closed, then turned his attention back to JR. "It's a good deal."

"No, it's not," JR shot back.

"35 percent of Ewing Oil for each of us? We'll control the company!"

"With Ray, Gary, and Mama controlling the other thirty percent?" JR laughed. "Do you think I'm so stupid that I don't understand that if it comes down to a fight between me and you who those three will side with?"

"Are you planning to fight me, JR?"

"Of course not," JR snapped. "But business is business and there's bound to be disagreements between us. Besides…"

"What?"

"Daddy is keeping the power to veto any decision we make. On paper, you and I will control the company, but in reality, he's keeping all the power."

"You heard what he said. He promised not to interfere."

"And you think that man will keep that promise?"

Bobby sank down into his chair and slowly shook his head. "No. No I don't."

"Look, Bobby, I want Ewing Oil back as much as you do, but I'm not accepting such a bad deal."

"So what do you want to do?"

"We'll talk to our own lawyer and propose a counter offer. If Daddy doesn't take it, then we'll go on with our plans for the new company."

"JR .." Bobby hesitated.

"It has to be this way, Bobby," JR said softly. "I want my brother beside me, but I'll go out on my own if I have to."

"I'll be with you, JR," Bobby promised him. "I just wish there was another way."

JR started to respond, but there was a sudden knock at the door. "Sorry to interrupt," Harv stuck his head in. "Bobby's wife is on the phone. She says it's an emergency."

"I'll take it in here," Bobby told him.

"She didn't call for you, Bobby," Harv informed him. "She wants to talk to JR."

JR's eyebrows shot together in surprise and he reached for the phone. "Pam? What's wrong. How did she figure it out? No. No, don't worry. What? You keep her there, you hear me? I'm on my way home right now and you make sure she's there when I get there!"

He slammed down the phone and grabbed his hat. "Come on, Bob."

"What happened, JR?"

"Sue Ellen knows I know about the baby. She thinks that's the only reason I stayed with her after Ray. She's packing her bags."

"Jesus, JR!"

"Don't you worry, Bob," he said on his way out the door. "The only way that woman is going anywhere is over my dead body."

***

Donna took a deep breath, gathering her courage to speak. "Do you want to know why I think?"

"That depends I guess," Ray said truthfully. "If you're going to lecture me about what a horrible man I am, then no, I don't want to hear it."

"You're a good man, Ray," Donna smiled. "But you do have some pretty serious family issues to sort through."

"No kidding," Ray chuckled. "Alright, let me have it."

"This thing with Sue Ellen, she and JR will either work through it or they won't. I know you feel guilty, and you should. Sue Ellen is a married woman and you took advantage of her. But what's done is done. And it's not like those two didn't already have serious problems before and after you slept with her. As far as Jock goes, don't let his sickness cloud your judgement about him. He wasn't sick when Amos Krebbs told him the truth and he still lied and schemed to use it to his advantage. Make peace with him if you can, but don't let him snow you. And Lucy?"

"Yeah?" Ray prodded her when she hesitated.

"She's so young, Ray. And emotionally vulnerable. The sickness you feel knowing the two of you...all I'm saying is that I'm sure she's feeling even worse."

"What can I do for her?"

"Go talk to her, Ray. The least you can do is let her know she doesn't have to go through this on her own."

Ray stood up, walked to the sink, and rinsed out his coffee cup. "Donna…" He couldn't bring himself to face her, "that man I once was... that's not who I am now."

Donna stood up, moved to stand behind him, and wrapped her arms around his waist. "I know that, Ray."

She laid her head on his shoulder and hugged him tightly. "I never could have loved that man. But I love YOU. Very, very much."

***

"I'm so glad you're here,Gary," Ellie patted her son's hand. "I don't know if I could have gotten through this without you."

"I didn't do anything to help," he grumbled.

"Yes you did," Ellie told him. "You sell yourself way too short."

Gary shifted uncomfortably and changed the subject. "I'm starting to get really worried about Lucy. She hasn't come out of her room all day."

"Yes. She's taking all this very hard."

"I tried to talk to her. She wouldn't even open the door."

"She's processing an awful lot right now. Give her some time."

Gary nodded and squeezed his mother's hand. "How do you think things are going at Ewing Oil?"

"No idea," Ellie confessed. "But the longer we wait without hearing anything, the more nervous I get."

"Me too, Mama," Gary sighed. "Me too."

***

JR strode purposely into the condo. He fixed his furious eyes on his wife, but addressed his first words to Pam. "Get John Ross. You and Bobby take him to Southfork. My wife and I need some time alone."

"Don't you dare," Sue Ellen seethed at her sister-in-law. "No one is taking my son anywhere."

"You heard me, Pam," JR's voice was low and warning. "Get John Ross and go. Now."

Pam looked nervously between JR and Sue Ellen. She glanced at Bobby who simply shrugged at her.

"I'm sorry, Sue Ellen," she said shakily as she moved to carry out JR's orders.

JR was silent as he waited for Pam to gather up John Ross and his things, but his eyes never left Sue Ellen's face. She was mad as hell. Her chest was heaving with her deep breaths, her face was flushed, and her eyes were cold and angry.

Bobby opened the door for Pam and John Ross, then turned back to his brother. "JR…"

"Get out," JR snarled.

Bobby sighed heavily but didn't argue. He and Pam left the apartment without another word.

"Now, Miss Texas," JR advanced on her, closing the distance between them. "You don't really think I'm going to let you leave me, do you?"

"I'll do whatever I please!" She spat at him angrily. "If you think for one minute I'm going to let you keep me trapped in a loveless marriage just because I'm pregnant…"

"Shut up," he growled.

"What did you just say to me?"

"You heard me. I told you to shut up."

"You bastard!" She brought her hand up without warning and smacked him hard across the face.

JR didn't move, but a small smile curled up his lips. "How's your head?"

"What?" Sue Ellen was so furious that she was shaking.

"Does your head still hurt?" His tone changed. It was now low and silky.

"My head is fine, JR…"

Her words were cut off immediately by his mouth. He kissed her roughly, his mouth demanding and angry on hers. She brought her hands up to his shoulders and pushed against him with all her strength, struggling to force him to let go of her.

JR chuckled from the back of his throat and tightened his hold on her. His kiss changed from hard and rough to deep and seductive in an instant. Sue Ellen moaned with a mixture of frustration and lust as she felt her body betrayed her and responded to his kiss.

JR shifted his body slightly and let her feel his arousal. He cupped her bottom and forced her even closer against him, grinding himself into her.

Sue Ellen lost all control and wrapped her arms around his neck. She kissed him back and squirmed to get even closer.

He laughed out loud, picked her up, and carried her to the bedroom. He laid her down on their bed and looked down at her, his eyes full of pure desire. "You're my wife," he told her roughly, removing his clothes. "I'm going to take what's mine. Do you hear me?"

Sue Ellen couldn't speak. She nodded frantically and reached up to help him undo his buckle.

JR laughed again and crawled on top of her. He pushed her skirt up out of his way and ripped her panties from her body.

She didn't protest when he positioned her legs around his waist and slid into her. She met him thrust for thrust, moaning and panting beneath him until they came together in a huge wave of almost unbearable pleasure.

When it was over, he rolled off her and sat up. She turned her back to him and tried not to cry. JR reached over and gently turned her onto her back. "No," he said softly. "This isn't the old days, Sue Ellen. We're not going to come together in a cloud of heat and lust then turn away from one another."

"JR…"

He reached down and pulled the quilt up around their bodies. He pulled her against him and laid back to relax. "We're going to talk, honey."

"And then what?" She asked, choking back her tears.

"And then? Then I'm going to make love to you again. Then, we'll get up and go get our son. Then, we'll come home and make love and go to sleep."

"It's not that simple,JR," she cried.

"It's exactly that simple," he told her. "Get comfortable, honey. We're going to be here a while."

Shot Through the Heart

Part Forty-five:

***

"Alright, honey," JR kissed the top of Sue Ellen's head, "we have a lot to hash out. Let's get to it."

They were laying on their bed, naked and snuggling beneath the covers. Sue Ellen's head was resting on his chest. JR waited for her to say something, but she remained silent.

"Fine," he groused. "I'll start. First of all, I don't ever want to hear you refer to our marriage as loveless ever again. You know that's not true. Even during our worst times, there was love there and you know it."

Sue Ellen didn't respond at all. He tamped down his annoyance and went on.

"As far as Ray Krebbs goes, I remember that damn night, Sue Ellen. I know what I did to you. I know how I made you feel. I left you alone, rejected, drunk, and needy. It's my fault. I hate that it happened. I hate that I have to look at Ray every day knowing he's been with you. But I'll deal with it. I don't blame you, I don't hate you, and I can put it behind us if you can."

He felt the wetness of tears fall from her eyes onto his chest and he tightened his arms around her.

"I know what I am, Sue Ellen. Listening to Mama talk about how Daddy treated her, like a trophy or a prize and not a wife...well, I guess it just made me understand how you have felt all these years. I won't do that to you again. I don't want a trophy. I don't want a breeder. I want a woman who loves me. A partner. A friend. A lover. I'm not with you because of that baby. I'm not with you because of John Ross. I'm with you because I love you and I need you and my life would be empty and miserable without you."

"Why didn't you tell me you knew about the baby?" She finally spoke, her voice small and shaky.

"For the same reason you didn't tell me you're pregnant," he sighed. "Because we suck at communicating and both of us are afraid to give the other one the benefit of the doubt. We have to get better at that, honey."

"Do you think we will?" She asked tearfully.

He shifted their bodies so he was overtop of her and could look down straight into her eyes. "Yes, Sue Ellen. We will. We're already getting better at it. We're talking now, aren't we? I told you about Miranda, didn't I? We can do this, honey, but we both have to try."

"I will if you will, JR."

"I will," he whispered roughly and nuzzled her neck. "I already am."

Sue Ellen nodded at the truth of his words and wrapped her arms around him. "I need you, JR. I need you so much."

"I need you just as much, Sue Ellen. Our need is because of our love, honey. Don't you understand that yet?"

"Yes," she nodded again, tears streaming from her eyes, "I guess I do. JR...make love to me again."

JR smiled and slipped inside her. "I'm going to be making love to you for the rest of our lives," he whispered roughly. "You won't ever feel unwanted or rejected ever again," he vowed as he moved in a slow, maddening rhythm. "I swear it."

***

"It's lovely to see you again, Donna," Ellie smiled and gave her guest a brief hug. ""This is my son, Gary. Gary, this is Donna Culver."

"It's nice to meet you," Donna shook his hand.

"Same," Gary smiled at her.

"I'm glad Ray came over," Ellie told Donna, gesturing for everyone to take a seat. "Lucy is taking all this much harder than I expected."

Donna dropped her eyes to the floor and shrugged. "Well, maybe she'll talk to Ray and work through her feelings."

Ellie's eyes shot up at the tone of Donna's voice. She suddenly had the feeling that there was something going on with Lucy and Ray that she didn't know about.

"Heads up," Bobby strode into the room and pointed toward the foyer. "Daddy just pulled up in the driveway."

"Just what we didn't need," Gary grumbled, standing up.

They heard the front door open and Jock came sauntering in the room. "Well look at this," he laughed. "Y'all having a party you forgot to invite me to?"

"What are you doing here, Jock?" Ellie demanded.

"What do you think, Ellie?" He shot back roughly. "I've come home. And I'm here to stay."

"Clayton!" Scotty Demerest sat back into his chair and ran a frustrated hand through his hair. "I already told you I couldn't discuss a client with you!"

"You can if I'm paying her damn bill!"

"But you're not!" Scotty protested. "Your son is!"

"See this?" Clayton tossed some papers across the desk at him.

Scotty picked up the papers and read intently. "This says…" Scotty looked up and arched an eyebrow. "How did you manage this?"

"It doesn't matter how," Clayton snapped. "What matters is that I DID manage it. Dusty has been declared mentally unfit to handle his finances. I'm his guardian. That means I control his money which means I control whether or not you continue to get paid to represent Kristen Sheppard. Now. Start talking."

***

"Oh my God, JR!" Sue Ellen put down her make-up brush and turned to look at him. "Oh my GOD!"

"Yeah," he didn't look at her. He concentrated on tying his tie instead. "Pretty awful stuff."

"No wonder Lucy is so upset!"

"Yeah. Look, I'm ashamed to say I didn't even think about this until earlier today. I was wrapped up in the fact that he slept with you."

"JR," she narrowed her eyes. "You said a ranch hand told you he saw Lucy and Ray in the hayloft years ago. Why didn't you ever say anything?"

"I was saving it," he told her truthfully.

"Saving it for what?"

"For if Ray ever crossed me and I needed to keep him in line," he shrugged.

"JR...she was so young. And your niece!"

"Come on, Miss Texas. Well as you know me, you can't honestly be surprised that I kept it to myself on the off chance it would be useful someday."

"But Lucy…"

"What?" JR chuckled, "I didn't need to defend her honor. That cause was lost long before Ray Krebbs."

"But, JR…"

"Sue Ellen," he cut her off, "It was over and done with long before I ever found out about it. I never confronted Ray because I wanted to keep this in my back pocket and I never confronted Lucy because that wouldn't have served any purpose other than to embarrass the girl."

"I suppose that makes sense, JR… but now…"

"Yeah. I know. I'll talk to her, okay?"

"Okay, JR."

"And you…"

"What?"

"Don't say one word to anyone. You hear me? Not even Bobby and Pam."

"I won't, JR. I promise."

JR nodded and slipped on his jacket. He didn't know exactly how he was going to approach Lucy, but one thing was dead certain. This was ONE secret that could never come out.

Never.

It would destroy Lucy's life. Jock would never let it go. His father would throw Lucy away like a sack of garbage.

And he wouldn't allow that.

Happy to see JR and Sue Ellen made up and talked. Loved what JR said. Made me all misty, he can be so sweet sometimes.
Loved the end too, and how protective he and Sue Ellen are over Lucy.
Cool to see Clayton trying to sort out Dusty, I hope he can do it without causing my girl any more pain or stress.

And you know what I'm gonna say last don't ya?.................

I want to smack Jock in the face.

Oh...I think your need to smack him will intensify over the next few chapters.

I have always disliked Jock. I am actually enjoying writing him as the pure bastard I have always imagined him to be.
Oh dear, am I gonna be going for the iron?

I never liked him either. I always thought he was a bastard.
And never understood (except maybe for a while when Jim Davis died), why he was treated like the sun shone out of his arse.

Team Clayton forever.

I've caught up again. Typically JR wanting to have steamy make up sex and typically Sue Ellen not being able to resist him. But oh well at least he wanted to talk afterwards instead of just running out the door. So I guess that's progress. You do write JR/SE very true to themselves.

As for Lucy and Ray. Pam already knows about them because Lucy told her early on that she was together with Pam's ex. She sort of did it to rub it in. It was already in the mini-series. I can't remember if Pam told Bobby about it. I think she might have. Just thought I'd point that out.

But yes Jock definitely never knew about Lucy and Ray and he would blow his top off if he ever found out.

I'm also Team Clayton btw. :)

I had forgotten all about Pam knowing, but yeah, you're right. I only re- watched the first few episodes of season four before I started this fic. Guess that's why I messed up the timeline so much.

Oh well, don't know if I can fix that either. We'll see.

Shot Through the Heart

Part Forty-six:

***.

"I'm sorry," Ray sighed, coming into the living room. "Lucy wouldn't speak to me either."

Gary stood up and ran a frustrated hand through his hair. "I don't know what to do. She can't stay locked in that room forever."

"Has her mother tried to call her?" Pam asked.

"Yes," Gary nodded. "She won't take calls even from Valene. I just don't understand this! Why would Lucy be this upset over Jock having a bastard son?" He sucked in a deep breath when he saw the look on Ray's face. "No offense," he said sheepishly.

"None taken," Ray grumbled. *Speaking of Jock, didn't I hear him come in?"

"Yes," Bobby confirmed. "Him and Mama went into the study to have a private talk."

"Well, let me know how it turns out," Ray told Bobby. "I better make myself scarce before JR and Sue Ellen get here."

"Good idea," Bobby agreed.

"Too late," Gary pointed out the window. JR's car was pulling into the driveway.

"Oh, hell," Ray muttered under his breath.

"What's the big deal?" Gary wondered out loud. "JR's going to have to get used to you being Jock's son just like the rest of us…" he stopped talking when he noticed the uncomfortable looks on all the faces around him. "Something's going on and I'm the only one who doesn't know, right? Just like always."

No one had the nerve to answer him. They all watched JR and Sue Ellen get out of the car and walk towards the house.

"Ray?" Donna whispered nervously.

"Let's go," he told her, holding out this hand to help pull her out of her chair.

"Evenin' everyone," JR nodded, sweeping into the room with Sue Ellen and heading straight to the bar. "What's Daddy's truck doing in the driveway?"

"He's in the study with Mama," Bobby told him. "He said he's home to stay."

"Is that a fact?" JR sipped his bourbon and eyed Ray and Donna. "You two aren't leaving us are you?"

"Yes," Ray grunted his one word reply.

"You should stay a while," JR said evenly. "You and I need to have a talk."

"I don't want to fight with you, JR," Ray said cautiously.

"I didn't say a damn thing about fighting. I told you we needed to talk."

Ray looked at Donna who shrugged and decided to give in. "Alright. We'll stay a while, JR."

"Good," JR finished his drink and walked over to kiss Sue Ellen's cheek. "I'll be back down soon as I can." He straightened and headed toward the foyer. "I'm going up to see Lucy."

"She isn't talking to anyone," Gary told him.

JR turned around and looked Gary in the eye. "She'll talk to me," JR said, his voice full of confidence. "Listen, Gary, I need you to do me a favor."

"What?" Gary's eyebrows shot together.

"If Daddy comes back in here raising hell and going after the women, I need you to look after Sue Ellen and get her away from him."

"I'm sure Bobby can handle it," Gary said bitterly.

"Bobby will have to look after Pam. I'm asking you, Gary."

Gary didn't answer for a few moments. He studied JR's face carefully and decided his brother was being sincere. "Alright, JR."

"Thank you," JR nodded. "Be down soon as I can. I'm counting on you, Gary."

Gary didn't reply. He waited until JR had disappeared up the stairs and then let out a deep sigh. "What the hell was that all about?"

"Your brother is asking you to do him a favor," Bobby told him, his voice low and even. "Nothing more, nothing less.

Kristen growled under her breath and slammed her hand down on the table.

Clayton Farlow and Scotty Demerest had just left her. Clayton had somehow managed to get control of Dusty's finances. He and Scotty had made it clear that if she wanted continued legal representation she had to stay away from Dusty and stop interfering in JR and Sue Ellen's life.

This was going to be a problem. She was so close. She knew her sister. Sue Ellen would fall apart completely if JR cheated and Patricia was served up a stiff prison sentence at the same time. It wouldn't be long at all until big sister was back on the bottle.

Clayton was going to throw a huge wrench is all her plans.

But she still had an ace in the hole. She was still carrying Cliff Barnes' baby. Pam and Bobby Ewing would do whatever they had to do in order to make sure the child was born healthy and ready to be adopted.

Clayton had given her 24 hours to give him an answer to his ultimatum.

And she was damn sure going to take advantage of every minute.

"Lucy?" JR knocked on her closed door. "Open up, girl."

"Go away, JR!"

JR rolled his eyes and glanced up and down the hallway to make sure no one else was around. "You and I are gonna talk. You can either open this door and let me in or I'll yell what I have to say through the door. Sure you don't want the rest of the family hearing what I know about you and Ray Krebbs."

JR took a step back from the door and waited. It opened a few seconds later to reveal a pale and weak looking Lucy. "What do you know about me and Ray?"

"Everything," he shrugged. "You gonna let me in or not?"

Lucy backed away from the door, a panicked and stricken look twisting her ghost white face. "How did you find out?"

"Not that it matters," JR walked into the room and shut the door behind him, "but a ranch hand saw the two of you in a hayloft and dropped the dime. I've known for a very long time."

"But… you never said anything…"

"I never had a reason to," he sighed. "Sit down," he pointed to the edge of the bed. He watched her as she sank down and buried her face in her hands.

"Who else knows?"

"Sue Ellen," he sat down beside her and reached out to take her hand. "And it wouldn't surprise me if Ray told Donna Culver. Those two are getting pretty serious."

"What about Grandma and Grandpa? Or Daddy…"

"No," JR said softly. "They don't know. Neither do Pam and Bobby. And they never have to know, Lucy."

"I feel so dirty. Ashamed…"

"Lucy, I'm not going to lie to you. This is tough. You had sex with your uncle and that's never going away. But…"

"What?"

"But life goes on. You have to get over it and let it go."

"That's easy for you to say."

"No it's not," JR confessed softly. "It's nowhere near as easy for me as you think."

"Where's Daddy?"

Ellie walked into the living room and sat down on the couch beside Pam. "He's leaving," Ellie answered Bobby. "He said to tell you and JR he got your counter proposal and that we would expect you both tomorrow at Ewing Oil tomorrow afternoon to discuss it."

"I'll let JR know," Bobby told her.

"Speaking of JR, where is he?"

"Upstairs talking to Lucy," Gary answered his mother. "He's been with her a while. I guess she agreed to at least see him."

Ellie nodded and turned her attention to Sue Ellen. "How are you feeling?"

"Just fine, Miss Ellie," Sue Ellen smiled at her. "The headache is completely gone."

"Good," Ellie nodded. "I've been very worried about you."

"Mama," Bobby interrupted, "what happened between you and Daddy?"

"I told him he couldn't come home just yet. We agreed he had to sort things out with you and JR and the business. After that's done, he and I are going away together for a while."

"Going away?" Ray repeated. "Where?"

"I'm not sure yet," Ellie sighed. "He and I have so much to sort through. We need to get away from Southfork and the family and try to work through it all."

"So the two of you are going to reconcile?" Sue Ellen asked her.

"I don't know," Ellie answered her truthfully. "But Jock is my husband. I love him. I owe it to him and to myself to try."

"JR…" Lucy's eyes were full of tears. "I'm so sorry."

JR sucked in a deep breath, stood up, and walked over to stare out the window. "I didn't tell you about Ray and Sue Ellen to get your pity, Lucy. I told you because I need you to understand this situation is hell for all of us in different ways. I feel…"

"What?" She pushed him.

"Sick. Gut punched. Everytime I see him or someone mentions his name."

"He's your brother now."

"Yes," JR turned to fix his eyes on hers. "My brother. And your uncle."

"God, it's all so gross."

"Yes, it is. And I won't lie to you, girl. This is going to be a hard row to hoe. But we have to do it. Both of us."

"Can you do it?"

JR laughed bitterly and moved back to the bed to sit beside her again. "I don't have a choice. He isn't going anywhere. And you know I've made up my mind to stick it out with my wife, come hell or high water. Getting shot changed things for me. That trial, all the things that were said...Lucy…"

"What?"

"You're right, you know. It IS gross. Disgusting. It's also in the past. You can't change what you did. You had no idea who he was to you. Hell, girl, Ray isn't that same man and you're sure as hell not that same bratty child. You gotta suck it up and get on with your life. Hold that pretty head up high and stop letting the shame control you. We all have shame." He bowed his head, suddenly unable to meet her eyes. "At least in your case, you didn't mean to do what you did. Imagine being me and knowing that I'm directly responsible for all the shame and disgrace because of deliberate decisions I made."

"JR?"

He looked back up at her and smiled sadly, bringing his hand up to gently brush a tear from her cheek. "Yeah?"

"I'll… I'll help you get through your shame if you help me get through mine."

His smile widened and he pulled her to him for a hug. "You got yourself a deal, girl."

"Well, you have your drink," Kristen sat down and narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "Now tell me what the hell you want."

Jock grinned and sank back into the couch, making himself comfortable. "Seems to me that you and me have a lot in common and some mutual goals."

"Like what?"

"You want JR and Sue Ellen apart don't you?"

"Come on, Jock" Kristen snapped. "I'm not one of your worshipful kids. We both might want them apart, but we have totally different reasons for that. And don't think for a second that you can con me into believing that you'd ever accept me as a daughter-in-law."

"Now, Kristen," Jock laughed at her, "I'm way too smart to try to con a con artist. You're right. I'd never allow JR to marry you."

"Then we have nothing to talk about."

"Oh, I don't know about that," Jock flashed her an evil grin. "You don't really want JR for yourself. You just want to hurt Sue Ellen. I can give you a way to destroy that woman without tying yourself to a bastard like JR. And you can earn yourself a tidy little fortune while you're at it. You interested?"

"Maybe," Kristen shrugged. "Tell me what you have in mind."

"I will. But first let's talk about that Barnes bastard you have inside you and how we're gonna make sure Pam and Bobby never lay eyes on it."

***

"JR?"

JR's eyes snapped open when he heard Sue Ellen say his name. He tightened his arms around her and kissed the top of her head. "Yeah?"

"Are you alright? You haven't said a word about what happened between you and Ray."

JR sighed heavily and tried to organize his thoughts.

It had been a long and tense evening. Lucy had finally come out of her room to mingle with the family. She and Ray avoided each other like the plague. JE had gotten into it with his mother over Jock, warning her not to trust one thing that came out of his Daddy's mouth. Pam had cornered him about Miranda, pushing him about why she decided to try to seduce him out of the blue.

And then there was Ray.

JR had gotten him alone in the kitchen and told him he wasn't going to dwell on the past but that Ray shouldn't expect to be welcomed into JR and Sue Ellen's life as a brother with open arms either. Ray had retorted that he wasn't any happier about being a Ewing than JR was to be forced to accept him.

"Nothing happened, Sue Ellen. We agreed we're stuck with each other and that we both had to figure out a way to deal with it."

"And that's it?"

"That's it," JR replied flatly. "We should try to get some sleep, honey. Tomorrow is going to be an absolute nightmare. We have to meet with Kiefer in the morning about your mother's case then I have that meeting with Bobby and Daddy about Ewing Oil."

"I know, JR. I just…"

"What?"

"My brain won't turn off. I can't seem to stop thinking long enough to go to sleep. I'm so scared. Jock and Ellie are going to reconcile. Kristen is holding her pregnancy and my affair with Dusty over our heads. My mother might go to jail. Ray is going to be a permanent part of all of our lives. And you…"

"What about me?"

"You're dealing with so much. I'm afraid."

"Of what?"

"JR…"

JR shifted their bodies until she was lying on top of him. He reached up and cupped her face in his hands, forcing her to look down into his eyes. "You're right, Sue Ellen. I AM dealing with a lot. Lucky for me I have the woman I love to help me get through it all. Don't be afraid. We'll figure everything out together."

"You promise?"

"I do," he bent his head to kiss her. "I swear to you, Sue Ellen. We can make it. As long as we stay committed and honest with each other, nothing and no one will ever get in between us again."

Jock is a bastard. He may have taught JR everything he knows but JR has a few tricks up his sleeve.
Jock and Kristen going after Sue Ellen is not going to end well for either of them. JR will destroy them both.
