Dallas Drives: the cars used in the series

That’s it! Thank you! I had no idea what it was! LOL

Oh great. I'm glad that helped.

It's certainly an unusual car. I like the retro looks.

Hi @Jenn. Would this be the Avanti Cabriolet?

i325412.jpg

IMCDb has a page about that car.

By the way, I moved your thread over here as we've got a whole forum devoted to Dallas. Have fun exploring the threads. :dance1:

Very interesting. I forgot what April drove and to be an Avanti make is noteworthy. A car with an interesting history, even after the demise of Studebaker. These late-1980's Avanti's still had some of the design of the original '63 model with a lot of General Motors parts. I don't remember what April drove after this.

BTW, welcome to Telly Talk @Jenn . Enjoy your stay. :ello:

It's interesting to watch the episodes and look at the cars in the background.

Notice the true to life details. Sue Ellen's car was built when most states didn't require a front license place. It is obvious the EWING2 plate was just bolted the best they could.

At least the mid-seventies truck in the background has a factory spot for the front plate!

It does bring one back to that time if one is old enough to remember the roadways of the United States filled with these cars.

I was of the opinion that these Mercury Colony Park and Ford Country Squire wagons, Ewing #2, were ranch cars that Sue Ellen drove from time to time. Here we can see a hatted man at the wheel of this Mercury. In later episodes one could see those wagons with the Southfork "SF" on the doors.

Indeed I note that square body Chevy, '75-'77 or so and that Datsun 210 wagon ( I think  ) in front of it. LOL, remember Datsuns prior to reverting to their Nissan name?

Oh, so that’s why we had our front license plate in the same position on my mom’s Pontiac Catalina. Lol

If you had a Pontiac Catalina then you were one of the cool kids!

Wasn't it named after the town of Catalina in the Arizona desert? There was a long stretch that was used for a proving ground and for racing. The advantage was the track was in the middle of the desert, so an out of control car could just fly out through the sand and not hit anything.

Yes I do!

Here's the Z car, when they had to hang those ridiculous bumpers on both ends to meet the 5mph damage laws.

We used to call those bumpers "Adult Diapers"

Found something pretty cool!

Remember how we were talking about Ray's Suburban?

1643222274197.png

He started driving this and then GMC dealers sold out of Suburbans everywhere in Texas!

Well, here is something I never noticed before. In the episode where Ray leaves Dallas, he rides a limo to the airport. Nothing special about that, right?

But look at the limo! It's at the 2:00 minute mark. Pretty cool.

that's the Bonneville, right? Is the Catalina the island near LA? (or the salad dressing)

I've always been of the impression that General Motors named the Catalina after the LA island and the Bonneville after the Utah Salt Flats.

I agree the '70 Bonneville/Catalina were cool with that front and the circular vent bezels. We never saw one of those on Dallas. Pontiacs were not too popular in Dallas. They were more for Texarkana to Atlanta Coors beer runs.

Stumbled across this video on accident. Reminded me of Sue Ellen's grocery getter.

Kind of cool to see one still in amazing shape.

I follow that channel and noticed this earlier today. These large station wagons that Sue Ellen and the Southfork staff drove were like the luxury SUV's of their day. Similar to a Lincoln Navigator or a Cadillac Escalade in today's market.

I never understood why Sue Ellen ended up with a station wagon! It would have made sense, if Sue Ellen had had several children (and their friends) that she had to car pool around town, but that wasn't the case, so ...? :confuse:

And when Sue Ellen finally had had enough of JR and Southfork, she moved to good ol' England with the most boring guy in the world! :giggle:
Sue Ellen had to have the room in the station wagon to put all of her shopping in!

Does anyone remember the cars Cliff Barnes drove. I remember the BMW in the early years.

i232150.jpg

... and I think he drove Saabs later on.

It seems Ken Kercheval was a fan of old cars, especially Packards. I have even more respect for Mr. Kercheval.
