There was an actress around at the time called Caren Kaye who I thought looked a great deal like Joan.
Bringing her in for season 14 might have been better than killing Val off - but then of course we wouldn't have had that wonderful reunion in "Just Like Old Times."

Wow! That is a pretty good resemblance between that classic star and Joan. Actually Miriam Hopkins could have played her mother/grandmother in a movie.

It's really hard for me to picture anyone other than Joan Van Ark as Valene, especially when I try placing alternatives into some of her most memorable scenes.
I mean, it's quite hard for me imagining another actress bringing so much to the scene in the above photograph. Joan Van Ark does wonders with it, and while Valene might not always be my favorite character, I'd be willing to side with the argument that she was probably the character that developed the most over the show's lengthy tenure.

Joan totally owned that role, and she is a talented actress. The only other equally talented actress I could see doing the character justice in the exemplary way Joan did is one of my favorites, Sissy Spacek.
