Patrick Duffy about Pam and Bobby from old interviews

Hello here Isobel newcomer, I was reader, now I want interract and share...
I'm not fan of Dallas (it's soooooo bad it's good) but of VP, I'm doing a blog about her, so many beautiful pics before she's lost the plot with fitness... Her live through newspapers and tabloids is just Waouh!... She dated Warren and Spielberg too...
I was reading old newspapers when I've found a Mr Duffy(the mean Buddhist, his interviews are full of bs, but because of the tragedy they are ignored) interview about Pam and Bobby...

"when Pamela went nuts and was admitted to a mental hospital I thought the time had come for Bobby to run off the rail... find a woman who's got some action. But he continues as before. There I was trekking off to the hospital everyday with flowers and a sympathetic expression when I really feel like giving a good slap". Patrick says the producers want to keep Bobby a Pure Pollyheart who would never abandon his wife. The viewers would never accept him going off with another woman. "
Duffy points out:" it's a pity I'm stuck with boring Bobby".
--------
"After the divorce" says Patrick "thought Boy Bobby will start dating like crazy. The producers said no I had to be good. But we were always sort of getting back together because the couple was so firmly established in the minds of the audience that scriptwriters couldn't walk away from it. "
--------------
He says of Victoria Principal who plays Pamela" I have never even conversed with her off the set. But on set we have a great working relationship I think it's because we play such a lousy people ".
------
Being paired with VP (whom he calls" the upstage artist of the world ") was difficult at first." We were in a constant state of competition, we were very territorial in front of the camera. "
Their relationship improved during Dallas third season when Duffy made his debut as a director " I developed an appreciation for her and I think for the first time she started to trust me ".
--------------
That mean the producers let VP go to please Duffy and give him youngers partners that he has casted.

Welcome newcomer. Of all the interviews I've seen with Patrick Duffy he only ever spoke affectionately and highly of Miss Principal.

He tends to use a lot of sarcasm and attempts at being really funny and I've always thought he spoke in jest when referring to Bobby & Pam or storylines.

None of us know if Victoria was difficult to get on with, we only know she sometimes had bad press about having such a reputation. We all know she was extremely popular which is very evident on this forum.

They didn't let her go because of Duffy, she wanted to go and none of their offers inticed her to stay. Her exit plot though is another story.

@isobel : Welcome to the forum. If you're willing to post the blog you're working on here, I'd sure would like to read it.

In regards to the quotes of Patrick Duffy stated above:

I'm sorry - but I doubt any accuracy, both in content and in the vocabulary being used. Over the years I've read basically everything Dallas-related outwhere, and I find it hard to believe that Duffy spoke about "going nuts" and "giving slaps".
I would bet it's out of these tabloid press articles of the 80s. There was some kind of obsession that all actors of each primetime soap had either a hateful, lifelong feud with other cast members or sharing an eternal, "sharing every minute-kind of" friendship.

It obviously generated some buzz to promote the series in the 80s and people tuned in so they could spot as true experts the underlying true emotions.

In reality it was just a job, where actors (like each of us) is put together with a bunch of strangers for most of the day for a limited time. And like in every working environment there some colleagues you like, some you don't, some you ignore and most of them are forgotten when you move on.

VP was always professional and she closed this chapter of her life. Duffy stayed on the show and chose not to close this chapter. The both returned for 2004's reunion in a professional manner. There is nothing to suggest otherwise

But of course, like in the tabloid press, there are always some who share the obsession of cast rivalries and then Duffy's interviews are scrutinized and the underlying hate etc. is finally revealed because Duffy blinked in the interview not once, but TWICE.

What's bad and what's good?

She dated Warren and Spielberg too...

Well, I've heard she tried to date Spielberg (i.e., "do you wanna direct me??")

That mean the producers let VP go to please Duffy and give him youngers partners that he has casted.

I don't think Duffy asked for VP to be fired, but her leaving had to have something to do with how Pam got pushed back into the nursery plotlines.

Being paired with VP (whom he calls" the upstage artist of the world ") was difficult at first." We were in a constant state of competition, we were very territorial in front of the camera. "

I read those comments from Patrick back in the '80s, so who knows how accurate they are (I think the likely are)?

I'm curious about how she was an "upstage artist", though. She was rather unsure as an actress in her first four years of the show. Later, however, her bravura totally worked.

Oh, there's some stuff to suggest otherwise. Depends on who you asked.

But once she was gone, DALLAS was never the same.

Even Patrick Duffy was sick of Pam. Lol

But I do understand where the producers were coming from. They didn't want to turn Bobby into JR Jr. That was a smart move.

"But what about me - the mother of his two children!?"

Berry Berenson, if she were still alive.
We're talking about the distorted news propounded by tabloids around the world. The only news then was that Perkins had slept with Victoria Principal ... and he was gay. But was married and the father of two children.

So, even these discussions about Patrick and Victoria seem at least partially false to me.

I have a huge Dallas collection, at last count it was over 100 000 articles, since Jan 12 1980, and most of them i will take with a pinch of salt - so much rubbish has been printed over the years

Althought Bobby and Pamela had great on screen chemistry - they were not close off screen and Patrick Duffy has made remarks in the past re VP and was glad she didnt attend certain Dallas events.

Personally think he (and Larry) was rather jealous of the fact she went onto make mega millions (and thats from a cast members wife that I have stayed with)

She went onto create a very successful career post Dallas - whereas Duffy couldnt get a decent job away from it and had to come back as that film career didnt materialise

I used to worship at the feet of Mr Duffy, my ideal man, I dont any more and much of that changed after TNT crap and after

I don't think Victoria is a haughty person, but like Barbara Bel Geddes and Ken Kercheval she had a more reserved character than the other leading actors.

And I also believe Patrick Duffy was specifically joking about Victoria, because actually jealous of her success outside Dallas.

Furthermore, in public Duffy interacts very little with Ken, indeed at times it seems that Kercheval was transparent to his eyes.
