Patrick Duffy about Pam and Bobby from old interviews

Duffy just loves the sound of his own voice and tries hard at being the joker.
He may well have been envious, but as I said before he's always spoken about Victoria in a professional affectionate way.

Mind you, I can still see his face now when I put a photo of Linda infront of her to sign for me and spent some time chatting with her and they're supposedly close.
He did sign my paper invitation, albeit in silence with no eye contact!

Oh I agree @southfork88 - I dont think that Mr Duffy was the only jealous cast member either

Larry, Patrick and Linda set themselves up as the Trio, and lovely that they are close but at the end of the day as you say, BBG, Howard Keel, Ken K, Steve K, Susan H they kept themselves to themselves

I remember writing to Ken K for a story about BBG and he replied with a hand written letter to say that the cast member he was closest to off screen was BBG and that surprised me as they really had little screen time together

BBG was not part of a clique, neither was VP and I guess they had their own interests away from the camera - BBG avoided the press and interviews big time and led a private life, whereas Larry courted publicity and that meant more $$$

I really don't see the drama in the reports that led to this thread. Principal and Duffy worked together. Just think of your experiences at any work place and you can relate that most are collegial, distant but friendly - just no friends. And if you head to the next job you probably never hear from them again with some rare exceptions. I don't think it's fair to describe Duffy as "mean" just because he isn't always smiling or can be rude if he's unnerved. Especially if you don't know more about the situation when it happened. When I worked as a journalist, covering film and TV, I encountered some deranged fans trying to get close to actors I had to interview. They followed them into toilets and wondered they didn't get an autograph there. Some fans interrupted serious talks in restaurants where they weren't even guests, some people just don't know to keep distance and take everything personal. Team Duffy here.

Victoria Principal seemed to have a good connection with Ken Kercheval and she wasn't a fan of practical jokes on set (probably a reason why Hagman, Duffy and John Beck preferred other acting partners). I couldn't stand the boys in school who were always telling stupid jokes (and laughed the hardest about them) or farted loud. Of course I never wanted to meet them again. And I never cared much for Pam but I have a lot of sympathy how Principal handled her exit from Dallas and never returned. The final straw was the offer Pam made Jenna to get the baby - that was a character assassination and the actress must've realized then she doesn't have any influence to change the writing for her when it was needed (as Donna Mills could on Knots Landing with their babies story or Jane Wyman's changes to the final episode of Falcon Crest). Imagine you're considered by many viewers as the second most important character but no one listens to your discomfort? But Principal did a 'Vanity Fair' shooting with the cast in 1995 and the 2004 reunion, so she's more gracious than I'm to former classmates from school.

I wasn't one of those deranged fans you mention, far from it, and I had to dig deep to find the confidence to achieve what I wanted, having travelled all that way. I would've forever regretted not getting a photo with or autograph from Linda.

It was interesting to observe Patrick at the reunion where most of the audience were there for Linda.

Pam fans will always believe how pivotal Victoria was to Dallas and I appreciate that, but for others, Dallas started off about Pam & Bobby, but there were two other stars waiting in the wings to outshine them.

Patrick has said in video interviews about Victoria "stealing his light" and how they were competitive at the beginning. However, I think it's Patrick's ego and coming from TMFA where he was the star, that made it a competition in his mind only. Let's face it, Victoria stood on the tape "x" on the set floors where she was supposed to stand so if she was in Patrick's light, that's the way the director wanted it.

Then Patrick whined to Lenny about a bigger, meatier role and he got it. Same thing with TNT's version. Patrick whines and he gets a bigger role at the expense of his co-stars. If that were Victoria, she'd be labeled a diva or a b!tch.

I have no doubt that Victoria can maybe piss some people off sometime but I'm not certain , she does it deliberately.

I remember listening to @Garry 's most recent Victoria interview and as soon as she answered, she immediately put the interviewer on hold so she could get a cup of tea. I initially thought, "how rude" but then she graciously settled in for a lengthy interview and seemed witty, spoke fondly of her cast mates and made it very clear she still appreciated her role, what it gave her and she cares about her fans.

I will always say that Larry was the most important star of Dallas but Victoria was the most important female cast member - and when she left Dallas and the dynamics changed and not for the better

In 1980 it was Larry who was hitting the headlines on a daily basis but by 1983 it was Victoria and she outranked all her co stars several times over by the number of articles, newspaper print, and magazine covers she graced - She was the golden girl and everything she touched turned to gold. She was the one who topped the polls out of the soap stars along with Lady Di

The older I got - the more my love for Pat D diminished and I did see him once after a Fri Pantomime in England and he was pretty abrupt to fans. Think it was 2007
I had dragged a friend with me (who works for c5) and she thought he was a "insert rude word"
I went on my own to see the show on a sunday and he redeemed himself as I got back stage and pics, and autographs and all was well again - but there was that side of him on that Fri night that I thought OH - Really??

I know that some cast members got rather cheesed off after a while with PD/LH larking around and I have no doubt that VP and BBG rolled their eyes on several occasions as the boys "played" on set.

The bloopers/gag reel show VP & BBG joining in with some of their larking around (bearing in mind they didn't know these clips would still be accessed some 40 odd years later)
VP speaks in interviews about how Patrick would take kitchen utensils to bed for bedroom scenes. I bet they all had fun, maybe sometimes it did become a little tiresome.

I think even if they weren't all close friends (and who cares if they weren't) they were all professionals and they all contributed to the reasons we all love that show.

BBG had to phone Katzman to say get the boys to behave night before doing a big dramatic scene like smashing the china in Acceptance. She shouldnt have to do that. They should know, a time and a place and also when its not appropritate
Oh yes I remember that. I guess she was nervous about her scene, but I would've thought she had a close enough relationship with them both not to have had to do that. Surely they had enough about them to know what was appropriate.

Of course Patrick's excuse is "if we got to play, it meant we got our scenes done, the more we played the better we were when they shouted Action!"

Certainly, rude behavior often occurs on television as in any job.

But taking revenge on Victoria Principal for choosing to leave by creating the 'mummy story' was truly wicked.

Victoria was the symbol of beauty of those years and she had married a plastic surgeon.

The revenge against her is enacted by making Pamela, her character, lose this beauty and then leaving Bobby for a cosmetic surgeon, who later turns out to be a doctor with another specialization ready to help her die.

A pathetic squalor !

I wasn't thinking of you. There was some Duffy-story I've read months ago that sounded weird. In general I was never into autographs, conventions etc. but in this thread I associated my experiences with some same old gossip which is repeated over decades and the sources are often questionable. But I'm interested in the circumstances where fans meet stars or seeing pictures of it.

When Dallas started the most talked about character in my teenage circle of schoolmates and friends was Lucy (mini-series)! Then Pam, Bobby, Ray and J.R. who most of us thought of as too over-the-top evil. A few months later Sue Ellen (S1) became more and more interesting. But young females favoured Pam as the more relatable. When I started to work the women over 25 clearly appreciated Sue Ellen the most and the men liked J.R. and Jock far more than Bobby or Ray. No one except me liked Cliff the most.

Cliff Barnes is one of my favorite characters. And I think Ken Kercheval was in Dallas one of the most talented actors. I didn't like the character in the final season 1990-1991 and nuDallas.

I felt the same. The final season especially because of the ugly story with Michelle. That wasn't Cliff any longer and in nuDallas he was Emperor Palpatine, with no explanation why he turned to the dark side. As a lawyer with political ambitions he could've still been an enemy to the Ewings. The TV movies presented a recognizable character who was open to forgiveness and retiring and then Cidre destroyed him.

Brian Kinney... I've watched Queer as folk during the pandemic, I still prefer the British original...
Brian and Justin were cute(bad actors) in the 3 seasons, but after it was awful...

I know you weren't thinking of me, (LOL) I was just putting my experience forward in comparison.

I think I was very unusual to have Sue Ellen as my favourite from such a very young age!

The reports you keep posting are full of not-facts and contradictions that you then have to wonder the genuineness of the rest of the articles. The Victoria article you posted says she was born in the States (which is already wrong as she was born in Japan). So if they can’t get that right the truth of the rest is more than questionable. Just from that alone this publication is clearly not based on fact

Using a 1979 photo in a 1987 publication of her also shows the magazine is not perhaps the most reliable, highest quality publication you are getting into from

The last Patrick article you posted says in one paragraph
"I made more money in the
last 12 months that I ever did in 'Dallas.' But they made me a very lucrative offer to return. Money was never the factor. I felt I had to get out to let the industry see what I
could do. I couldn't display that on
'Dallas.'
I mean is this really what he actually said? The way it’s written I doubt it. If money was never the factor why mention everything about money? It’s a contradiction. And he left to show the industry what he could do? He did a so so mini series and played a goat.
As has been said before, did many of us like all our co workers? Do we still keep in touch with them 40 later? And does it matter? Most likely no to all three questions for most of us I suspect but a big deal isn’t made about it
