If Gary and Valene had been main characters on Dallas

I think both would've probably been a bit surplus on Dallas if they had stayed on - if anything, their appearance served as both of a warning to Bobby and Pam what happens to someone who caves to the pressure of being a Ewing (Gary), but also the lengths JR will go through to get rid of what he'd perceive as an interloper (Val).

I guess if Knots hadn't happened they could've certainly worked them in later on when Bobby "died" and then Pam left.

You're absolutely right. The Gary/Valene dynamic was too similiar to Bobby/Pam in relation to the rest of the family.

Where would their bedroom be for a start?

I wonder if JR and Gary would've got on better? In his sober more business like mind, would he have wanted to learn about Ewing Oil, even just to spite JR?

Gary and Ray would've got on well, as JR said they had a lot in common. Bobby said he liked him in reunion so maybe they would have been close.

I've always wished Gary was in Dallas more, all those drunk scenes with Sue Ellen both disgracing the family.

Not sure how Valene would get on with the other Ewing women. Would she still yearn to work as a waitress? And Abby? Would love to see her turn up.

Picture the dining table scenes too.

If I hadn't over analysed it so much, I wanted to put this thread on a couple of weeks ago!

I certainly wanted Gary & Valene on TNT's nuDALLAS -- much more than they were.

Where would their bedroom be?? At the other end of that attic, next to Sue Ellen's room.

It would have changed the dynamics massively if Gary and Val had stuck around for a long length of time. Gary's presence would mean loads of upheavel, like influencing Bobby in some ways, scaring J.R. with his potential, Gary doing some things brilliantly because he wanted to, Gary running away under pressure, getting drunk worse than Sue Ellen at her worst, going on a rampage, affairs etc. Val is also so stubborn, someone you can never truly shake off if she's annoyed and sticks around. She would be fretting when Gary does things wrong or cracks under pressure.

They would fracture a lot of the family dynamic. Gary and Val's issues would effect the rest of the family.

Gary/Valene was far more volatile. As well as their deep love, Valene would try to mother Gary a lot in the early Knots seasons, try to get him on the straight and narrow with work/life balance etc., while Gary would be annoyed by this nagging and even bored with it at times. He was like a bomb waiting to go off, when he would crack and run away, or go to the bottle.

Bobby and Pamela is a very different dynamic. Bobby is far more sure of himself, and Pam is less intense overall when she's worried about Bobby compared to Val when she's worried about Gary.

J.R. is always worried about Gary's potential. And in J.R.'s mind, a potential threat is an actual threat.

Gary and Ray would've got on well, as JR said they had a lot in common. Bobby said he liked him in reunion so maybe they would have been close.
Gary and Ray would have probably got on well, yes. They each have different strengths and weaknesses, and both like ranching. Gary is more chilled out and sometimes lazy, while Ray is a hard worker. On the other hand, Gary is more sure of himself as a Ewing, while Ray has low self-esteem a lot of the time.

I've always wished Gary was in Dallas more, all those drunk scenes with Sue Ellen both disgracing the family.
Gary was a different type of alcoholic to both Sue Ellen and Digger. Gary's kind of alcoholism was strictly of the non-functioning kind. In other words, if he falls off the wagon, he is going to end up at rock bottom pretty fast. The two-part finale to Season 1 of Knots Landing, called "Bottom of the Bottle" shows this very well.

Not sure how Valene would get on with the other Ewing women.
I think she'd get on well with Pam, despite Pam being a city girl while Val is a rural mountain girl originally.

Would she still yearn to work as a waitress? And Abby? Would love to see her turn up.
In Knots, Val went more into improving her education and becoming an author of best selling books.

Yes I remember Gary's drunken rampages very well. You're right he was different.

Capricorn Crude wasn't it? Did JR have a hand in trying to stop it? I can't remember? I recall seeing him in the bookshop when val was signing/selling her book.

Great observations on my questions, thank you.

Gary tried to stop it being released, because of what Val was saying in it, even though she was using pseudonyms for the characters. J.R. bought the publishing company that released Capricorn Crude, so that he got to profit from its sales, and took delight in showing up for Val to sign a copy of the book for him while he told her the news. This was around the time of Jock's will, with Abby there to support Gary (she didn't go into Southfork) and Val in town to sign copies of her book. Gary had originally asked Val to go to Southfork with him for the reading of Jock's will, but she turned it down.

Great observations on my questions, thank you.
My pleasure :)

How would the dynamics on the show have changed, if there had been no spin-off? Given Joan Van Ark's formidable acting talent, I think JR's vendetta against Valene would have been one of the main plots throughout the series.
I think the character of Lucy could’ve greatly benefited from having her parents on the show regularly. Perhaps we would even get more insight into her childhood and how Val was driven away.

If the first two episodes of season 2 (dvd) are any indication of what having Gary and Val on the show permanently would’ve been like, then I think there was enough family drama there to entertain us for years.

Oh, y'know. They probably thought her acting wasn't up to KNOTS' standards -- which is not really fair. In fact, Tilton gradually became better on DALLAS, and with the often superior (or more consistent) writing on KNOTS, the arrival of Lucy in the last couple of seasons might have prevented it from spirally into daytime soap insignificance (as it did).

I mean, Lucy is their daughter, after all.

In the Dallas pilot (1978), Gary and Valene had a little house of their own, like J.R. and Sue Ellen.
