Jock's car, the Southfork museum piece.

Jock Og

Telly Talk TV Fanatic
Here it is; in all it's glory, Jock's guzzler a 1978 Lincoln Continental Mark V. The beast can be viewed at the Southfork museum (inclusive of a gift shop).

Patrick; Larry, Linda, Steve, Ken, Victoria and Charlene are reminiscing, in the Southfork living room about their time on DALLAS. The subject then comes around about their other original cast members (Barbara Bel Geddes and Jim Davis), (a scene from Dallas ‘Return To Southfork’; retrospective reunion movie, DVD-4, DVD – ‘The Movie Collection’, 2004):

Larry: “Ye know a get together like this reminds me of Jim Davis and Barbara Bel Geddes. They were really the heart of this family.”

Patrick: “Well Jim would be right up here now, talking about the Oil Barons Ball.”

Larry: “Yeah or putting ideas into my head for the next oil deal. What a great spirit he was, ah?”

Steve: “He was like a team captain, a cheer leader. He just stayed with everybody, encouraging us all to do our best and to work as a team.”

Victoria looks at Patrick, Larry and Steve: “In the script Jim was your daddy but on the set I always thought he was mine.”

Linda: “Very sweet!”

Charlene: “Yeah!”

Larry: “Yeah!”

Flashback scenes of Jim as Jock are shown, (complete with trumpet sound):

Jock walks along the paddock, standing at the bar during the barbeque, on a horse in one of the Southfork fields.

Jock to Pamela, who is bed after recovering from the barn fall and loosing her baby:

"I guess you don't have no reason to really care but I want to keep my family together."

Jock with Ellie looking on gives JR a pat on the back, to congratulate him on the birth of John Ross Ewing III:

JR: “Thank you!”

Jock: “I just can’t believe it my oldest boy finally got himself a baby.” Jock is very happy.

Jock speaks with Bobby, at the Southfork stables:

Jock: “JR giving you a hard time?”

Bobby: “I can’t work with him daddy. Now I don’t like saying it but it’s true.”

Jock: “Bobby you stand up to him!”

Jock is smoking on the Southfork veranda and has a fatherly chat with JR:

Jock: “You jackass!”

JR: “Now wait a minute daddy.”

Jock: “Well it’s about time you learned the art of subtlety.” He then takes another pull of his cigarette.”

JR: “Well why should I be subtle?”

Jock: “Because the lack of it turns competitors into enemies and enemies into fanatics.”

Jock is standing at the barbeque bar drinking bourbon and has an exchange of views with Digger:

Jock: “Same old Digger Barnes!”

Digger: “You took everything; everything, including my girl.”

Jock: “Your what?”

Jock and Ellie are in the Southfork den facing each other:

Ellie: “I really wouldn’t know what I’d do without you!”

Jock: “Ah!”

They kiss and hug, as Jock says: "You're beautiful.”

Jock and Ray are on horseback, in one of the Southfork fields:

Ray: “Oh you look kinda tired.”

He gives Jock a pat on the back.

Jock: “No I’m not tired, just trying to keep myself busy that’s all. Keep my mind from working so much. Ye know every time I get get things settled. It seems like something else turns up. I can handle myself if that’s what you mean. Let’s go home!”

Ray: “Yes sir!”

They gallop towards the Southfork mansion.

Focus on Jock’s portrait; as the rest of the Dallas T.V. cast begin to speak about the other DALLAS anchor, Barbara Bel Geddes.

I remember seeing his Lincoln Mark V when I was at Southfork. I was always struck by the aftermarket wheel covers (hubcaps) on the car in the gift shop. Clearly not the same as on the series. I still could kick myself for not getting a photo of the VIN number of Jock's car. I do wish some of the other cars from the series would also be displayed for the fans.

Yeah, a pity there's not a replica of Bobby's Mercedes SL. It was an iconic car and last seen in the famous season ten cliffhanger when Victoria Principal departed the series.

This pic has always puzzled me.
Why isn't Sue Ellen draped over JR's car?

And why aren't the other Ewing women here leaning on Jock's Lincoln?

hmmm, in the grand tradition of another iconic Texas slugger, did Big Jock Ewing name more than one of his offspring after himself, ala Big George Foreman?

seen above: did Big George learn that left to the body from seeing Jock in action in a saloon brawl near Marshall, Texas (George and the brainy and beautiful Donna McCallum's hometown) sometime in the 60s? Muhammad Ali was one of the few who could absorb that blow, unlike Tom Owens' buddy in Landowne. Could even Ali have withstood a young Jock's onslaught without those padded boxing gloves and a referee to save him?

That one was at least his third SL during the run of the series, so I'd say there's a combined iconography thing going on between the different red SLs (which had slightly different specs, engine sizes and colours).

I don't recall Clayton driving his car, only a chauffeur and Sue Ellen. Was this Clayton's car?

While there isn't yet a listing for Clayton's cars (I kind of stopped when I got to the end of the Ewing number plates), Clayton's cars do get a mention over in the main Dallas cars thread:

I always wondered why Clayton ditched his Rolls-Royce for a Cadillac Seville in the later seasons. This was about the time JR had the Allanté so General Motors must have had some pull.

I remember seeing that as he arrived at Ray's house once or twice, maybe s07 s08. Watching s11 he's driving the rolls. Again, one of the many things that falls through the cracks...

I'm not surprised to see those protruding bumpers on the front - the car, not Sue Ellen. That front bonnet is so long.

Everything is bigger in Texas, Rove.

Reminds me of a joke once told in @Jingle Guzzlers thread:

Okie: My ranch is so BIG, it takes me two days to drive my Cadillac across the ranch.
Texan: Yup. I had a car like that once.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Ive seen Jocks car at SF, i thought it big, chunky and ugly and Id never be able to park it (wouldnt want to either)

Clayton drove his car into SF S6, ep 13 Past Imperfect - see piccy

Personally Miss Ellies cabriolet would be for me, might be able to park it but wouldnt have the roof down that often living in UK

It was around this time that new standards required upgraded bumpers at each end. We called them "adult diapers"

You can see them on Miss Ellie's car.

At least with Jock's Lincoln, the engineers could make it part of the front end design.

that photo shows how perfectly it fit Jock - long and rangy with a bit of flair on top/in front, like the hat and the prominent grille. Quite possibly an even better match than the Cadillac mentioned in the pilot script, a Fleetwood I think..

I love how in the explosion scene, the car and truck are dead still as the flames billow out vigorously. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it! With a big enough budget could they have pulled off something more realistic in those pre-CGI days?

You remind me of the discussions we had on the Dallas Drives thread. Here's the comment about Jock's Lincoln from back then.

This car was a perfect Jock car. If you weren't around at the time, I'll describe it the best I can:

You are a man of means. Successful and confident. You want a car that shows your status in the world.

Do you drive a Corvette? No, that is for people on the way up-- but you've already arrived.

Do you buy an expensive European car like Mark Graison drove? Don't be silly. Those guys are trying too hard and that is simply not your style.

So, how about a loaded up Cadillac? Hmm... interesting, but no. You don't want a car that flaunts your wealth. You are successful enough that you don't NEED to impress people.

The fine and expensive car for a person of success is the same as a fine cologne. It doesn't jump out at you-- it waits to be noticed.

Just look Jock's Lincoln. Everything about it says "success". The hidden headlights hinting at technology baked into the car. The long hood hinting at the power on tap. The big grill, charging through the wind. Even the turn signals look like expensive coach lights, inviting you to look, but not quite inviting you inside.

Wait! That car is long, wide, and handsome. But a two door? Why, of course! No reason for the owner to sit in the back seat to be chauffeured around. A man of this much power prefers to drive himself.

Oh, yes. In Texas a man like Jock would drive a Lincoln and nothing less.

I wonder what the history of Jock's Lincoln is? I assume it's been given to the Southfork business or on lease. I wonder if it's ever started and driven from time to time?

I do wonder the fate of some of the other famous cars from the Dallas series and if they are in collector's hands. One would think JR Mercedes' and maybe his Cadillac Allente are still in existence. What about Ray's Jeep J-10 Jeep or Pam's Corvette?

Of course Digger's '70 Mustang should be at Southfork ..... or The Smithsonian. ;)
