I hated him season one but he eventually grew on me.

I think the actor did a good job with what was given to him.
Agree. I think he did the best he can considering what he had to work with. The show just wasn’t set up to succeed and that was clear from the very beginning.

In a recent discussion with someone about this, my friend came up with one word, “weak.” I agreed. They made him too weak for my liking. It wasn’t that he cried in the elevator or that he hurt that made him weak. It was that at every turn he lost, fumbled, was emasculated. We hated JR. JR had his moments when he was down, weakened, but JR was never weak (until the series ended). I think that’s why his best scene was yelling at his mother “I’m not my father!” It’s because I could feel that weak boy explode. John Ross had everything to fear from everyone making him weak. A weak character is a tragedy not a serial. Two more of my cents anyway.

I hated that they made John Ross a loser. With the exception of recusing Emma, everything John Ross did blew up in his face. Also, of all of JR's traits to give to him, they chose cheating? That was laziness on part of the writers.

He was the son of JR from tip to tail. Perfect
Looking back on it, I felt the one big difference between them was John Ross was more of a hothead while J.R. was more calculating and better at reading the situation. Of course that can be chalked up to ones youth versus the others experience though. Perhaps with time John Ross would’ve improved in that manner.

I've said before (as did David Jacobs) that JR's son, John Ross, should have been "the good one" and Bobby's adopted son "the bad one" -- and site master @Pamela E suggested MAD MEN's Vincent Kartheiser as John Ross because it's very believable that Omri Katz's sweet-natured John Ross would grow into adult Kartheiser.

With squirrelly Josh Henderson as wicked Chistopher. As @Ollie james says, Henderson was perfect as JR's son -- but perhaps we can learn that Christopher was JR's biological son after all!

J.R. himself did wonder this in the later years of the original show. I know it takes some suspension of disbelief since Kristin did lose his baby and then got pregnant again by Faraday but it’s an easy fix really. We weren’t privy to it all anyway so Christopher eventually turning out to be J.R’s is not impossible, and it could’ve given TNT Dallas the shot in the arm it needed.

Records can be altered. They just have to write it.

I like that John Ross was a complex character. There seemed to be a war fought inside of him between doing good and doing bad. He wanted to be a good person and was fed up with always being compared to his father. Like he pointed out to Sue Ellen, he was not his father. But at the same time life kept being harsh for John Ross and he lost all the time. He never won in business or in love. Elena really broke his heart and that made him harder and colder and willing to follow in his father's footsteps since it didn't work to be good.

Also I think there was a vulnerability to John Ross the way that Josh Henderson portrayed him. Also I think most viewers really wanted John Ross to win sometime.

Like a lot of you who've already posted, I didn't care for JR3 in this. He was supposed to be like JR from 'tip to tail', but he was severely lacking in finesse. I think it was a mixture of poor writing and the portrayal of his character. I like Josh Henderson but he just doesn't have that 'it' factor - but to be fair, that's pretty big shoes to fill too.

Wow. I'm just happy to see some actual activity on this forum. It just goes to show, yet again..what a wasted opportunity.

So..I will raise one point..to all the people I've seen express an interest in seeing a prequel to the original series, well..in a sense, here ya have it.

I'm not saying John Ross and his father were exactly the same, but we don't know what J.R. was like in those early days with Jock. Some of us might not have wanted to see John Ross lose the way he did, but I doubt J.R. just became J.R. as soon as he rolled up his sleeves. I like that this shows a vulnerable side of John Ross because it can allow us to ponder if J.R. once had similar traits. It might have been more fun, but wouldn't have been as realistic to just have John Ross on top from the start. Now..was this intentional, or just one coincidence that, in my opinion, happens to fall in favor for the new series? Yeah, probably the latter.

I personally didn't care for the way Christopher was written..acted..I'm not sure which, and it didn't help that Bobby/Duffy was not just on the same high horse he had always been on, but the one with the board that had been going up his butt since his return in the original series..this, and a lack of a lot of likable(or interesting..or relevant) characters probably made it easier for me to have an appreciation for Josh Henderson's portrayal.

I still drop in but I've been busy reacquainting myself with Lorimar Dallas since Amazon Prime Australia made it available for screening. I recently took up an offer to good to refuse from HBO Max and to my surprise Dallas TNT popped up as a recent addidtion to their service.

As I sat down to enjoy lunch I decided to watch the first episode of TNT Dallas.

Positives? The cinemaphotography was stunning and I was thankful the producers went for on location shooting. It was awesome to see my favourite television family return and a nod to legacy characters of Jock and Miss Ellie.

Negatives?

I won't be returning to watch the rest. We've debated on this site enough why half the viewers departed the series the following week. The opening episode felt forced. Most jarring was seeing the formidable JR sitting in a nursing home glaring out the window. It's not how I pictured JR in 2012. Bobby was given the news he had cancer on the eve of his sons wedding.

John Ross was being a smart-arse and extracting oil from Southfork...trampling over the memory of Miss Ellie and being disrespectful. Uncle or not I would have punched him. Meanwhile Christopher had his own worries, creating earthquakes in China and unknowingly screwing his cousin...eeewwwww. I did have difficulty accepting Josh and Jesse as I thought the producers had raided the Desperate Housewives rejects.

I hated what the producers had done to the opening credits, only for this to be corrected later. Worse? What they did to the interior of Southfork. I couldn't make sense of it and I - and the series - suffered because of it as those traditional walks between the dining room to the living room or vice-versa evaporated. It's what made the original so compelling.

Don't get me started on the Ramos family and how they were shoehorned into the Dallas universe or the Rebecca Suter/Pamela Rebecca Barnes nonsense...I can feel my blood pressure rising.

In capable hands Dallas could have been a ratings success and several million viewers (U.S.) were there to catch up with the Ewing family. What transpired is proof what happens when you mess with a legacy series like Dallas. As you say...

...a wasted opportunity.

Well, when ya put it all like that.. lol. You know, truthfully, while I feel there were a couple things that were good about NuDallas, I can't argue with even one of your grievances. They should have had someone come on board, in addition to Cidre, that would perhaps supervise over continuity..since, it's always been clear that she only watched a handful of random episodes. I mean, seriously, I was just reading about this very thing on another forum, and apparently it's really a thing where someone will be brought on board for this very purpose. Of course, maybe they did have someone for this version- moving forward, but it's all the discrepancies with the original series that I just can't deal with. Just think if they had thought to bring one of us in to secure the continuity. The show might just now be finishing up about it's 14th year as well!!
