Why is drugs cheat Maria Sharapova being given preferential treatment for this tournament? She was allowed to compete even without qualifying and now the authorities have been scheduling her matches for the main courts when some of the top seeds are having to play on outside courts.

I'm hoping she gets knocked out as soon as possible. She should never have been allowed to play and her presence denies a place to a clean player.

Roger Federer wins in five sets as Rafael Nadal also comes from behind
By Piers Newbery

Roger Federer was taken to five sets for the second time in three days before overcoming Russia's Mikhail Youzhny at the US Open.

The five-time champion was two sets to one down but eventually came through 6-1 6-7 (3-7) 4-6 6-4 6-2 in New York.

Federer has now won all 17 matches against Youzhny, a year younger at 35, since the pair first met in 2000.

Top seed Rafael Nadal required four sets to see off Japan's Taro Daniel in the night session.

The Spaniard, 31, trailed by a set and a break before two fizzing forehands turned the second set around and he went on to win 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-2.

"It's true that I didn't play very well tonight but at the same time it's true that I'm through to the next round," said the two-time champion.

Federer takes the long route
It is the first time Federer has played five-set matches in the first two rounds of a Grand Slam.

"I think because you're on a high, you're thrilled that you got through, so you don't look at the negative," he said.

"Or I don't. Yes, I might feel more tired than I normally would going into a third round, but that's OK.

"My preparation hasn't been good at all here. I knew I was going to maybe struggle early on. Maybe I struggled more than I would have liked to.

"But I'm still in the draw, which gives me a chance."

The Swiss third seed goes on to face Spanish 31st seed Feliciano Lopez in round three at Flushing Meadows.

Federer remains unbeaten in Grand Slam play this year, having won his 18th and 19th major titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and skipped the French Open.

However, Federer's preparation for Flushing Meadows was disrupted by a back injury and he has been taken to the limit in his opening two matches.

American teenager Frances Tiafoe forced a fifth set in Tuesday's night session, before Youzhny led by two sets to one on Thursday afternoon.

"This match wasn't about the back, which is good. This is more just a grind," Federer said after winning in three hours and eight minutes.

"I felt different, completely different, the way it played and everything. But I'm really, really happy I got through.

"These five-set battles are actually quite a lot of fun and I feel quite warmed up by now."

After breezing into a 4-0 lead, the errors began to flow from Federer's racquet.

His backhand, such a strength for much of the year, was particularly wayward and he finished with 35 errors off that side in a total of 68.

It was a poor forehand that allowed Youzhny back into the match as the Swiss served for a two-set lead, and it was a battle to the finish line from then on.

The Russian levelled in the tie-break and drew gasps from the 23,000 spectators as a forehand brought him the decisive break in the third.

A woeful Federer volley into the tramlines seemed to sum up his afternoon, but the 19-time Grand Slam champion gathered himself sufficiently to edge through.

After an early break in the fourth set he again failed to serve out, but this time responded in the next game to level when a Youzhny backhand flew wide.

The Russian was having his own problems by now, requiring visits from the doctor in the fourth and fifth sets and falling to the court, apparently with cramp, early in the decider.

A tired double fault saw Youzhny fall behind at 4-2 and Federer quickly saw the match out against an opponent now unable to move freely, finishing with a smash.

"I haven't played a lot of guys with cramps in the last decade or so and the rules have changed, you're not allowed to get any help from the physio," added Federer.

"We've played a bunch of times and this was probably our best match."

Roger Federer wins in five sets as Rafael Nadal also comes from behind

Seeing this post makes me so disappointed with Andy Murray for waiting until the day after the draw was made to withdraw from the US Open when he knew he had a serious injury for a long time. As a result his place as second seed was given to a qualifier but had he pulled out the day before all the seeds below him would have moved up one place. The result is that Federer and Nadal are now seeded to meet in the semi-final instead of the final, which I'm sure is what most fans would have preferred, had Murray withdrawn earlier.

Kyle Edmund retires injured against Denis Shapovalov

Britain's Kyle Edmund was forced to retire from his US Open third-round match against Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov because of a back injury.

Shapovalov, 18, led 3-6 6-3 6-3 1-0 when Edmund pulled out, ending British interest in the singles events at Flushing Meadows, New York.

Edmund, 22, was playing his 10th match in 14 days and had the trainer on three times before withdrawing.

Shapovalov will face Spanish 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta in the last 16.

"It almost felt like it locked up and I struggled to have rotation," Edmund told BBC Radio 5 live.

"It's very unfortunate, one of those things. Ultimately I knew that for me to win two more sets the way I was feeling was not going to be possible."

Marin Cilic & John Isner go out in the third round

Former champion Marin Cilic suffered a surprise third-round loss to Argentina's world number 33 Diego Schwartzman at the US Open.

Fifth seed Cilic lost 4-6 7-5 7-5 6-4 as Schwartzman reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time.

The Croat was playing his first event since losing July's Wimbledon final to Roger Federer, because of injury.

Tenth seed John Isner became the fifth top-10 seed to go out as he lost to Mischa Zverev.

Germany's Zverev, the 23rd seed, played superbly to beat the American 6-4 6-3 7-6 (7-5) in the night session.

Isner's compatriot, Sam Querrey, did make it through with a 4-6 6-2 6-4 6-4 win over Moldova's Radu Albot.

Before the defeats for Isner and Cilic, there had already been early exits for fellow top-10 seeds Alexander Zverev, Grigor Dimitrov and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Congrats - she will be back to win more tournaments i think!!

Serena Williams gives birth to baby girl

Tennis star Serena Williams has given birth to a baby girl at a clinic in Florida.

Williams, 35, whose partner is Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, was admitted to the St Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach on Wednesday.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner said last month she was planning to return to tennis for the Australian Open in January.

Congratulations have been pouring in from sports stars and celebrities.

News of the birth came as her sister Venus prepared to go out on court at the US Open.

"Obviously I'm super-excited," Venus said. "Words can't describe it."

The couple are yet to confirm the birth themselves but Serena's coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, tweeted: "I am so happy for you and I feel your emotion."

He added: "Btw ... I wish you a speedy recovery... we have a lot of work ahead of us."

'Hope she doesn't play tennis'
Serena admitted she had revealed her pregnancy to the world in April by accident, after mistakenly uploading a photograph on Snapchat.

She won the Australian Open title this January while newly pregnant, and in an article in Vogue last month she said she wanted to defend her title.

"It's the most outrageous plan," she said. "I just want to put that out there. That's, like, three months after I give birth."

In June she appeared in a nude cover photo for Vanity Fair, saying: "I don't know what to do with a baby."

The news has delighted the tennis world, with Rafa Nadal among the first to tweet his congratulations.

Marin Cilic & John Isner go out in the third round
The seeds in the men's draw are dropping like flies and it's only round 3. So far, all the following have fallen (seedings given in brackets):

Alexander Zverev (4)
Dominic Thiem (6)
Grigor Dimitrov (7)
Jo-Wilfred Tsonga (8)
John Isner (10)
Jack Sock (13)
Nick Kyrgios (14)
Tomas Berdych (15)

Additionally, Andy Murray (2) has withdrawn injured. So that's 9 out of the 16 top seeds that are out already in the first week.

Rafael Nadal fights back to beat Leonardo Mayer in third round

Top seed Rafael Nadal overcame stubborn resistance from Argentina's Leonardo Mayer to reach the fourth round at the US Open in New York.

The Spaniard, 31, lost the first set but fought back to win 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 6-1 6-4 after three hours and 16 minutes.

Nadal saw 13 break points go begging before finally breaking the world number 59 after nearly two hours.

He dropped just five more games on his way to a last-16 meeting with Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov.

Dominic Thiem and Alexandr Dolgopolov reach fourth round

Sixth seed Dominic Thiem registered a straight-set win over Adrian Mannarino to reach the US Open fourth round.

The Austrian beat the French world number 34 7-5 6-3 6-4.

Mannarino served for the first set but sent a volley wide, allowing Thiem to break, and then lost seven games in a row as he struggled for rhythm.

Thiem, who has reached the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows three times in the past four years, will play Juan Martin del Potro in the next round.

The Argentine beat Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut 6-3 6-3 6-4 to set up the meeting with Thiem.

Del Potro said: "I think that bottom half of the draw is going to be surprising for one guy.

"But in the top half, you have Roger and Rafa, Dominic, as well, and they are favourites to win a Grand Slam title, for sure."

Juan Martin del Potro - I hope he does well, i really like him as a player and he was in a great Wimbledon semi final in 2013. hes had a lot of probs and surgery on his wrist in last few years but would love to see him progress to the final

Drugs cheat Maria Sharapova has been knocked out by second seed Simona Halep. The evergreen Venus Williams is also through to the quarter finals aged 37.

Delighted for him, go Del Potro!!

Juan Martin del Potro beats Roger Federer to make semi-finals

Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro stunned Roger Federer in four sets to reach the US Open semi-finals.

The 24th seed won 7-5 3-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-4 to reach the last four, thrilling his large contingent of supporters in New York.

He goes on to face top seed Rafael Nadal, who earlier beat Russian teenager Andrey Rublev.

Del Potro's victory means Federer and Nadal will end another year having never played each other at the US Open.

Top seed Nadal is now also guaranteed to keep hold of the number one ranking ahead of Federer.

It is the sixth time the pair have been one match from meeting at Flushing Meadows, and their potential semi-final clash had dominated headlines throughout the tournament.

However, an out-of-sorts Federer was no match for Del Potro, who returned 48 hours after his epic five-set win over Dominic Thiem to produce another thrilling victory.

"I honestly was only thinking about tonight," said Federer, 36.

"My head didn't even wander during the match. I knew it was going to be a tough one."

Del Potro, 28, beat Federer to win his only Grand Slam title in New York in 2009, and eight years later he delivered another blow to the 36-year-old on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

"I think I played my best match of the tournament," said the Argentine.

"I played everything well. My serve was good, I hit my forehands as hard as I possibly could.

"This is my home court too. The fans make me feel happy every time I play here. I hope against Rafa the crowd will be cheering for me again."

'I can't believe I am back'

rather sad del Potro didnt win the semi against Nadal

Rafael Nadal beats Juan Martin del Potro to reach US Open final

Top seed Rafael Nadal swept past Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro in brilliant style to set up a US Open final against Kevin Anderson.

The Spaniard won nine games in a row at one stage on his way to a 4-6 6-0 6-3 6-2 victory in the second semi-final.

Nadal, 31, will try for a third US Open and 16th Grand Slam title on Sunday, against a surprise opponent.

South African Anderson, 31, beat Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 earlier on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

US Open 2017: Sloane Stephens beats Madison Keys to win title

Unseeded Sloane Stephens completed a spectacular return from injury by beating fellow American Madison Keys to win the US Open at Flushing Meadows.

Stephens, ranked 83rd, beat 15th seed Keys 6-3 6-0 in the final.

The 24-year-old was ranked as low as 957th six weeks ago, having only returned from 11 months out with a foot injury at Wimbledon.

She becomes only the fifth unseeded woman to win a major title in the Open era.
