I really disliked Tommy McKay when I first watched the show. It didn't matter that he looked like a Ken doll with long hair, he was mean so I didn't like him.

However the last time I saw an episode with him in it, I sort of found him amusing in a way. The guy was a slime for sure and a bad guy but when I saw the scene he tried to hit on Cally and she told him she was married to JR and he left very quickly was funny. So was the scene where he stealed April from Cliff at the disco.:lolo:

To me, the whole series was unrealistic, starting with the premise: three generations of multi-millionaires, a lot of whom don’t even like each other, choosing to live together in a comparatively small house. This basic absurdity was part of the show’s charm. To select specific storylines as unreal seems a bit random. I wonder if people are simply voting for stories they didn’t like.

1. Haleyville - Ridiculous storyline & the beginning of a limp, lifeless J.R who didn't take any kind of revenge.
2. Michellegate - taking over Ewing Oil/ beating J.R at every step and not getting any form of payback.
3. Mummygate - Pam leaving Bobby & Christopher.
4. Wendellgate - Wendell falling for the set-up that put him in prison - he would never have been that stupid.
5. Everything in Conundrum.
6. J.R leaving Sue Ellen for Kimberly Cryder.
7. Jennagate - Jenna & Ray's relationship...didn't work, didn't fit.
8. J.R surviving with absolutely no injuries after being shot 3 times by Sue Ellen.
9. Angelicagate - Ridiculous storyline with Angelica & Jack.
10. Petergate - Sue Ellen liked men, not boys.

I'm not sure I entirely agree with you James. For example, I found JR trying to overthrow a foreign government to be a little far fetched but I liked the storyline. Similarly, it was unrealistic that JR would have gone back to Sue Ellen yet again, instead of making his relationship with Mandy Winger more permanent, however, I enjoyed seeing JR and Sue Ellen being back together. Admittedly some of my least favourite storylines were also the most unrealistic.

I find it highly unrealistic for JR and Sue Ellen NOT to be together. They were magical, whether fighting or not. I find it highly realistic for him to go back to Sue Ellen. And there you go - that's my opinion - seeing him with anyone else permanently would never have worked. It would be downright boring. HE would have been bored off his head!

There's another side too, where you watch the characters and over time you feel that you understand them and their motives behind what they do. Sure that itself can be somewhat extreme, but then when you've been watching over a period of time you also find yourself saying "Nah that's ridiculous, you've gone too far now" That doesn't mean you're right or wrong, but more about your own perception of a particular story and characters involved.

I wonder if people are simply voting for stories they didn’t like.
I also believe this too.

You missed off Watergate when Clayton & the boys burst the dam. Although actually I liked that whole storyline which introduced Carter McKay. ;) :)

I also have to add that the way they wrapped up the Wes Parmalee isn't Jock Ewing wasn't very realistic either.

Everything pointed to him being Jock, & Bobby's so called evidence wasn't worth a damn (nothing to do with Watergate!). It was all hearsay & circumstantial. A shame really as I loved that storyline but it was badly wrapped up in my honest opinion. Wes was obviously Jock. :(

I got the impression that JR never wanted to let her go. Not because he loved her so much, although sometimes he did, but more because of a combination of pride and fear, and the idea that she was his discovery. Like Frankenstein and his creation.

Yet we wouldn't have had a show we love if they didn't unrealistically all live in the same house. Totally believable if they lived in a South Pacific island though ;)

1.Bobby does care about PAa leaving Dallas - Pam leaving Dallas to spare Bobby and Christopher the pain of seeing her die I could just about accept, but Bobby effectively just shrugging his shoulders and letting her go and not being bothered to look for her stretched credibility too far.

2. Cliff Barnes kills his grandchildren - Cliff being so intent on harming the Ewings that he would risk the life of his only child and kill her unborn twins was ridiculous and totally out of character and was the final nail in the coffin for my enjoyment of TNT Dallas.

3. Michelle taking over Ewing Oil - Going from being "Little Miss Tight Skirt" to buying Ewing Oil? Totally ludricous.

4. Sue Ellen shooting but not killing JR - She fired 3 bullets into him at close range and he survived?

5. J.R marrying Cally - JR was ruthless in getting what he wanted so it's unimaginable that he would let someone like Cally trick him into marrying him. The real JR would have (1) paid her off, (2) tied her up in court and got the judge to side with him regarding her unborn child's custody, (3) got someone to threaten her or (4) set her up in some kind of sting operation so he could get rid of he and keep his child. In other words do anything other than marry her. He managed to get Lucy from Valene but he wasn't willing to do something similar for his own child?

6. Punk doesn't realise that Wyatt Haynes could be Wes Pamalee - Punk knew that Wyatt Haynes heard Jock "ranting and raving" revealing secrets of the Ewing family in the process and didn't occur to him that Haynes could have been Wes Pamalee or even to tell anyone about it until Bobby returns from South America and we're meant to believe this crap?

7. JR repeatedly reconciling with Sue Ellen - Really? By this time Sue Ellen was an old ex-drunk who hated him, happily would have sided with anyone to hurt him and she had already agreed that John Ross could stay at Southfork. Mandy was younger, more beautiful and loyal. She loved JR and was more innocent than the world-weary bitter and resentful Sue Ellen. In fact, Mandy was more or less everything Sue Ellen was when JR first married her. Further, Sue Ellen knew JR would never change his womanising ways and knew he would hurt her again to get what he wanted. She also knew as a recovering alcoholic she wasn't mentally strong enough to cope with J.R.'s bad behaviour. However, they both decided to ignore all this and get back together again.

8. Jordan Lee collaborates with Sheila Foley - As if Jordan would helped Sheila with her stupid scheme to masquerade as Bobby’s wife because he believed Sheila just wanted to make a speech criticizing OPEC. This man ran a successful independent oil company for decades and we are supposed to believe he would be so dumb as to believe this.

9. JR gets trapped in the asylum - This was a man who overthrew a foreign government, hired mercenaries who could have totally destabilised the Middle East and started an international war but he wouldn't have a more reliable plan to get out of an asylum?

10. Cally finds her inner Rembrandt - When Cally first started painting, her pictures were simple, naïve and childlike but had a certain charm. Then suddenly she inexplicably transforms herself into a brilliant portrait painter, producing an masterly painting of JR showing a high level of skill and sophistication that her earlier pictures gave no indication that it was within her capabilities.

It seems to me what you are implying is that JR should have married Mandy instead of Sue Ellen after their first divorce. The only problem with that logic is that at the time JR remarried Sue Ellen he had not even met Mandy!

I actually found JR remarrying Sue Ellen realistic. I mean his dad had died and something like that changes a person. It's not unbelievable to me to think that Sue Ellen thinks that JR actually has changed due to Jock's death. Also JR did court Sue Ellen in a way that I guess must have been similiar to how he courted her before they were married. So I think them realizing that they still loved each other and that their divorce had been a mistake was not that hard to believe.

Also I don't think Mandy was anything like Sue Ellen when JR first married her. Because let's face it, Sue Ellen was inexperienced when she married JR and Mandy definitely wasn't.

1. "Wes Parmalee." He didn't even remotely resemble Jock. He didn't even have the same build. Besides, anyone who had undergone that kind of surgery (similar surgery to the surgery that left Pam so ugly she couldn't bear to let her family see her looking that way) would have had lots of scars. I didn't see any scars on Parmalee's face. The best doctors in the world couldn't have done a plastic surgery job of that scale that well, and his surgery was done in a small hospital in the jungle. When we found out he was just Wyatt Haynes, the third guy who got into the helicopter later it explained him having a completely different build from Jock but didn't explain not having any visible scars. The storyline was insulting to Dallas, Jim Davis, and the fans.

2. "JR staying married to Sue Ellen for so long after their second marriage." I don't know how JR could stand Sue Ellen. Where we supposed to believe JR didn't believe he could do better than have an abrasive, irritating drunk for a wife? If she didn't like it she could have left. If not, JR should have made her leave by divorcing her. He was supposedly waiting for her to "give him a divorce." That's entirely out of character for JR. He would have divorced her whether she wanted a divorce or not. With her record no judge would have awarded her custody of John Ross. JR lived to enjoy life. Sue Ellen lived to be miserable and to try to make others equally miserable. JR didn't do anything he didn't enjoy or find worthwhile. While people like Donna Culver were making themselves miserable talking about JR and how much they didn't like him, JR was out having a good time. JR lived to have a good time. JR and Sue Ellen had two diametrically opposed philosophies towards life which proved to be incompatible far earlier than their eventual final divorce. They just ran the storyline way too many times for too many years. They ran it into the ground over and over again and ran millions of viewers away in the process.

3. The Lee Ann De La Vega storyline - that woman never would have been able to fool JR. She wasn't even close to his level of expertise at business. She was just a foolish dilettante and they had her pull off things that the shrewdest oil men in Texas were never able to accomplish. It was absurd. This storyline includes De La Vega selling Ewing Oil to Michelle Stevens and Michelle becoming owner of Ewing Oil. The whole thing was ridiculous.

4. JR Getting Himself Trapped In An Insane Asylum - It was very out of character for JR to have everything planned so poorly. The writers in the final seasons had no respect for the character of JR which considering it became the most iconic TV character of all time, they should have had a lot more respect for the character. I won't include too many things from the last few seasons because they could fill up a 10 least realistic storyline list on their own.

5. Sue Ellen and Peter Richards - She was old enough to be his mother! What would she see in him? Completely unrealistic especially for a woman whose place in society was so important to her. It was in very bad taste and it was ridiculous. There were some other unrealistic storylines, but this one was also painful to have to watch.

Continued soon...

You're right, I edited my post to "JR repeatedly reconciling with Sue Ellen".

Sue Ellen believed that JR fathered her sister's child. Sue Ellen was a weak recovering alcoholic who JR deliberately tried to drive to drink. JR repeatedly tried to ruin her life and that of those close to her and she still kept going back to him.

I see JR being like a lot of rich and powerful men who trade in their wives for a younger version. History is full of them. He wanted heirs and Sue Ellen wasn't producing them. He liked sex but Sue Ellen spent most of her time in her own room. Someone like JR wouldn't tolerate that when he could get many other willing women.

Both JR and Sue Ellen repeatedly had many reasons to move on with their lives and could have had happiness with someone else but the writers thought it was believable that they would prefer to stay in the living hell of their marriage. I think it would have been far more realistic if they married other people before getting back together.
