A great win for Takakeisho. Being 22-years of age he should have many good years of sumo ahead of him. He was on fire in this basho. I had wanted Takayasu to win as he's a fairly consistent ozeki but it wasn't to be this time around.

A great basho for Aoiyama and young Onosho. I was glad that Kotoshogiku got his kachi-koshi, but was disappointed that Yoshikaze had a 7-8 record. I do like these older rikishi.

The only thing that counts against Takakeisho is his relative lack of height and perhaps he needs a bit more in the way of belt technique.

The match between Tochinoshin and Shohozan was interesting on day 15. For his size (compared to his fellow rikishi) Shohozan is a real bull.

I'm hoping Tochinoshin has a good 2019. He was so strong the first half of '18. I'm just glad he was not kadoban for January.

Yes, Tochinoshin badly needs to improve in January or else he will be struggling to hold his rank.

Following its regular banzuke meeting, the Nihon Sumo Kyokai announced the names of the rikishi who will be promoted to Juryo for the 2019 Hatsu Basho.

Two men advance this time: the veterans Gagamaru (Georgia, Kise beya) and Sokokurai (Inner Mongolia, Arashio beya). There is no first-time promotee.

While the NSK does not announce the names of the wrestlers who will be demoted as a result, it is easy to infer that Gokushindo and Chiyonoo, who had the deepest make-koshi at the lowest rank, will be the ones to part with their silk shimekomi. Chiyonoumi may have been saved by that win on senshuraku against Terutsuyoshi.

In addition to Satoyama, who retired after Day 13 to become Sanoyama-oyakata, there are six more intai rikishi this basho:

Shingaku (Otake, driving incident)
Okoryu (Sakaigawa)
Unzendake (Sakaigawa)
Nakatani (Michinoku)
Takanoryu (Chiganoura)
Buken (Musashigawa)
