Why Ireland's win against the All Blacks was historic
Autumn international
Ireland (25) 40
Tries: Murphy, Stander, Murray, Zebo, Henshaw Cons: Sexton 2, Carbery Pens: Sexton 2, Murray
New Zealand (8) 29
Tries: Moala, Perenara, B Smith, S Barrett Cons: B Barrett 3 Pen: B Barrett
Ireland produced a stunning display to record a first ever win over New Zealand at the 29th attempt and end the All Blacks' run of 18 straight wins.

Tries from Jordi Murphy, CJ Stander and Conor Murray helped the Irish to a 25-8 half-time lead, then Simon Zebo scored his side's fourth try in the corner.

The world champions fought back to move to within four points but Robbie Henshaw's late try ensured the victory.

The sides will meet in another Test match in Dublin in two weeks' time.

Irish land historic win
This was Ireland's first success over the Kiwis in 111 years and it came about in sensational fashion as Joe Schmidt's men repelled a stirring second-half comeback by Steve Hansen's side.

TJ Perenara, Ben Smith and Scott Barrett added to George Mola's first-half try for the New Zealanders but despite some sustained late pressure, they fell short for the first time in their past 19 encounters with top-tier nations.

The match was the first of four autumn internationals for both sides, played in front of a capacity crowd of 60,000 at Soldier Field in Chicago, a venue chosen in an attempt to increase the exposure of the sport.

The teams will meet again at the Aviva Stadium in a fortnight after Ireland host Canada next Saturday and Steve Hansen's side face Italy in Rome on the same day.

Ireland's remaining 2016 autumn internationals
12 November v Canada Aviva Stadium, Dublin 19:15 GMT
19 November v New Zealand Aviva Stadium, Dublin 17:30 GMT
26 November v Australia Aviva Stadium, Dublin 17:30 GMT
Ireland fired by Foley memory
From the start, the Irish effort appeared to be fuelled by the memory of former international and Munster head coach Anthony Foley, who died suddenly last month.

Prior to kick-off Ireland lined up in the shape of a number eight, the jersey worn with distinction by Foley for many years, while their opponents performed their traditional pre-match haka.

Ireland made light of the aura of invincibility surrounding the three-time world champions in a first half which they mostly dominated to go in 17 points to the good at the break.

Schmidt's side produced a performance of accuracy, purpose, pace and skill as they denied the All Blacks quality possession and repeatedly frustrated their efforts to win their own line-outs.

The Irish display bore echoes of the Test between the sides in Dublin in November 2013 when they built up a 19-0 lead, before ultimately losing 24-22 after conceding a last-gasp converted try, but there was to be no repeat of that outcome this time.

_92292256_tiptackle.jpg

New Zealand prop Joe Moody was sent to the sin-bin for a tip tackle
Moala raced through for a fifth-minute try after Waisake Naholo had carved a way through the Ireland defences but the turning point of the opening period came when front-rower Joe Moody was yellow-carded for a tip tackle on Robbie Henshaw.

Ireland made good use of the prop's 10-minute absence as Murphy rumbled over after a rolling maul and then fellow flanker Stander surged over the line following a break by Rob Kearney.

Murphy was subsequently carried off after turning his knee in a freak incident but seven minutes before the interval Murray produced a moment of magic, darting through a gap in the New Zealanders' defence to run in his third try in five Tests against the Rugby Championship winners.

The All Blacks' half-time deficit equalled their biggest ever at that stage of an international match.

Ireland hold out in thrilling second half
The Irish momentum continued on the resumption, their relentless defensive efforts thwarting the normally ruthlessly efficient All Blacks, and Zebo increasing the advantage by touching down in the corner.

Replacement Perenara reduced the arrears by diving over near the posts and then full-back Smith managed to ground the ball beside the flag before being tackled into touch by Andrew Trimble.

Scott Barrett took advantage of some poor Ireland tackling to score on his international debut and when brother Beauden knocked over his third conversion of the game, the All Blacks trailed by just four.

Ireland continued to defend heroically however, forcing their opponents into a series of uncharacteristic errors, and a historic triumph was assured when Henshaw showed raw strength to score under the posts after Jamie Heaslip broke clear.

40-29 win over the three-time world champions in Saturday's Test match in Chicago.

Victory was their first over the All Blacks in 111 years of trying.

"It's been a long time coming and history has been made," said Best. "You can see how good a side they are and how much it means to our boys."

Best, who joined Peter Stringer as Ireland's fifth most-capped player by making his 98th appearance, said he "couldn't be prouder" of the work his side had put in.

The world champions had been described as the greatest rugby team of all time, and brought an 18-match winning run into the game.

But that was ended when Robbie Henshaw powered over late on for Ireland's fifth try.

"We just talked about attacking New Zealand," Best told BT Sport 2.

"If you give them ball and stand off them they're an unbelievably dangerous outfit. It felt like a home game for us."

Ireland play Canada in their second autumn international in Dublin on 12 November, followed by a rematch with the All Blacks at the Aviva Stadium a week later.

Grand Slam in spring and whitewash of Australia in summer, the autumn has begun with more history being made.

Inspired by a note-perfect display from scrum-half Ben Youngs, this performance was further undeniable evidence of the vast improvement made under the wily Jones.

Read: 'With every game a little more promise shows for England'

Listen: England can get a lot better - Jones

Just over a year ago, England were knocked out of the World Cup they were hosting at the group stage, a mile away from competing with the best in the world.

Now only New Zealand are ranked ahead of them, that status entirely deserved despite the obvious room for further improvement.

England can get a lot better - Jones
May day in November
After an early penalty and drop-goal from South Africa's Pat Lambie, England showed their ambition, Ford using Elliot Daly as a decoy runner in midfield off quick line-out ball to put Marland Yarde and Mike Brown in space, May finishing in the corner with trademark speed on his return to the side.

But the Springboks' power was hurting England, with six penalties conceded in the first 20-odd minutes and clean line-breaks made by both props. Lambie's second three-pointer regained the lead for the visitors at 9-7.

Gradually, England found the balance between pragmatism and adventure. Youngs' kicking and sniping helped regain the initiative, Farrell landed a penalty and then the men in white struck again.

With the ball going through hands again Daly kicked long from inside his own half, May forced JP Pietersen into a fumble, Brown kicked on and second row Lawes dived on the loose ball as it rolled over the try-line.

Farrell added the conversion and then Daly marked the occasion of his first England start with a monstrous penalty from halfway for a lead of 20-9 at the interval.

_92415084_mayrex.jpg

Jonny May opened the scoring with a cracking try in the corner from a crisp England move
Du Toit falls for a double dummy
Now it was England with the power, Billy Vunipola sucking in tacklers with his carrying, the Springboks' defence stretched and then fatally weakened.

Youngs spotted space around the fringes on the opposition 22, beat blind-side flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit with an outrageous dummy and found Ford on his right shoulder to put his fly-half away for their side's third try.

South Africa came into the match having lost four of their past five games, and shipped a half-century of points at home to the All Blacks in their last outing.

A breakaway try from replacement Johan Goosen briefly gave them hope, but when Youngs foxed Du Toit with a replica dummy to send Farrell away, England's authority was once again absolute.

Willie le Roux crossed late in the left-hand corner to underline England's need to tighten their defence.

But in difficult conditions, this was an accomplished display, and with Fiji in London next weekend, Jones will expect that flawless record to be extended further still.

Man of match: Ben Youngs
_92415088_youngs.jpg

Vincent Koch scragged him this time but Youngs produced a commanding performance for England
A perfect scrum-half's performance in conditions like this - precision box-kicking, snappy passes to his big ball-carriers, picking the ideal moments to snipe and break.

What they said
England captain Dylan Hartley: "There's plenty to work on, so that keeps us grounded. We conceded six penalties in the opening 20 minutes and that isn't good enough. But we're very happy to get that monkey off our back and I'm very proud of our guys."

South Africa captain Adriaan Strauss: "It was a very tough game, they were tactically very good and we couldn't deal with the high ball. We just couldn't put any pressure on the England team and we felt it the whole game. We'll have a hard look at ourselves on Monday and we'll fight back."

Next up

Read: Wales restored pride, says Howley

Following their 32-8 defeat by Australia the previous week, Wales were relieved to hang on against a Pumas side that refused to buckle in the face of extreme pressure.

After coach Rob Howley had asked for a response from his team, man of the match Alun Wyn Jones and wing Williams - who both missed the Wallabies defeat - made a huge impact on their returns.

Williams' determination for his try typified a full-blooded display by the Scarlets back.

_92416442_rexfeatures_7431374u.jpg

Alun Wyn Jones was the man of the match
Argentina failed to rediscover the exciting running which saw them beat Ireland at the same stadium in the 2015 World Cup.

And while Howley would be pleased with the improvement in Wales' performance, a lack of composure in attack, particularly when they were on top in the first half, will be a concern.

Wales controlled the opening period but, apart from two penalties by Halfpenny, had little to show for their dominance at the break as Argentina repeatedly infringed in their own 22.

When referee Angus Gardner finally lost patience and sent prop Ramiro Herrera to the sin-bin with a minute of the first half remaining, Wales were promptly penalised at the next scrum and went in with a three-point lead which barely reflected the run of play.

Davies stretches over as Wales retake the lead
After the break, wing Williams produced a tenacious finish to edge Wales eight points clear before Landajo's opportunism from a quick penalty created a try for the superb Hernandez.

When Davies dummied over for his eighth international try and Halfpenny converted, it looked as though Wales would pull clear.

But the Pumas, with Sanchez a probing threat at fly-half, hit back again when Landajo was given the benefit of the doubt by television official Sean Davey.

An exchange of penalties meant Wales led by a point before Halfpenny eased the nerves with his fifth successful kick of the game.

Ireland started with a completely different team from the one which beat New Zealand in Chicago
Autumn internationals: Ireland v Canada
Ireland (21) 52
Tries: Earls, Marshall, O'Halloran 2, penalty try, Dillane, Marmion, Tracy Cons: Jackson 6
Canada (14) 21
Tries: Van der Merwe, Paris, Evans Cons: McRorie 3
Ireland's second string eased to a comfortable eight-try victory over a determined Canada at the Aviva Stadium.

With 15 changes from the win over New Zealand, the Irish led 14-0 after tries by Keith Earls and Luke Marshall.

Tries from DTH van der Merwe and Taylor Paris levelled but Tiernan O'Halloran gave Ireland a 21-14 half-time lead.

A penalty try, Ultan Dillane, Kieran Marmoin, O'Halloran and debutant James Treacy added to Ireland's tally while Matt Evans got Canada's third try.

Paddy Jackson landed all of his six conversion attempts for the hosts with scrum-half Gordon McRorie kicking three out of three for the visitors.

Ireland now face a rematch with the All Blacks who will be hungry to avenge that 40-29 defeat by Joe Schmidt's men in Chicago.

Ireland's remaining 2016 autumn internationals
19 November v New Zealand Aviva Stadium, Dublin 17:30 GMT
26 November v Australia Aviva Stadium, Dublin 17:30 GMT
Schmidt has plenty in reserve
Ireland's fringe players were given the opportunity to impress, and several seized their chance to give head coach Joe Schmidt plenty to mull over ahead of the All Blacks rematch.

Eight players made their debut, five off the bench, and did enough to suggest the future looks bright for Irish rugby.

But it was the experienced players like Cian Healy, Sean O'Brien, Peter O'Mahony, Paddy Jackson and Keith Earls who were under most pressure to prove a point and, for the most part, they delivered.

O'Brien was one of the big success stories of the evening.

The Leinster flanker had been building up his match fitness in recent weeks and displayed all the dynamism of old in the loose, making 13 carries to press home his claims for a place on the bench next week.

_92416836_marmion.jpg

Try scorer Kieran Marmion is congratulated by Ireland team-mates Craig Gilroy and Luke Marshall
Debutants keen to impress
Coach Schmidt has often been criticised for not giving youth its chance but handed out eight new caps, taking the total of players who have made their debuts this year to 18.

Garry Ringrose's rise to the international ranks did not come quick enough for some, but the Leinster centre enhanced his reputation with a couple of line breaks and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet.

Jack O'Donoghue's composure in the back row, in between the vastly experienced O'Brien and O'Mahony, suggested he has a lot to offer at this level.

Apart from the rookies, a trio of Connacht players whose international careers are still in their infancy excelled on an encouraging evening for Ireland.

Tight-head Finlay Bealham transferred his off-loading game to the international stage and Ultan Dillane, who is highly-rated by Schmidt, showed ambition and adventure.

After making his debut on the summer tour of South Africa, full-back O'Halloran picked some fantastic lines and did his chances of another appearance during the autumn series no harm with two well-taken tries.

Ireland: T O'Halloran (Connacht); C Gilroy (Ulster), G Ringrose (Leinster), L Marshall (Ulster), K Earls (Munster); P Jackson (Ulster), K Marmion (Connacht); C Healy (Leinster), S Cronin (Leinster), F Bealham (Connacht); U Dillane (Connacht), B Holland (Munster); P O'Mahony (Munster, capt), S O'Brien (Leinster), J O'Donoghue (Munster).

Replacements: D Kilcoyne (Munster), J Tracy (Leinster), J Ryan (Munster), D Ryan (Munster), D Leavy (Leinster), L McGrath (Leinster), J Carbery (Leinster), N Adeolokun (Connacht).

Canada: M Evans; DTH can Der Merwe, C Trainor, C HEearn, T Paris; C Baird, G McRorie; D Sears, R Barkwill, J Ilnicki; B Beukeboom, E Olmstead; K Bailie, L Rumball, A Carpenter.

Semesa Rokoduguni marked his second England cap with his first try
Old Mutual Wealth Series
England (34) 58
Tries: Joseph 2, Daly, Rokoduguni 2, Harrison, Launchbury 2, Goode Cons: Farrell 4, Ford Pen: Farrell
Fiji (10) 15
Tries: Nadolo, Nakarawa, Talebula
England stretched their winning run to 12 matches as they ran in nine tries against Fiji at Twickenham.

Jonathan Joseph, Elliot Daly, Semesa Rokoduguni, Teimana Harrison and Joe Launchbury gave England a big lead.

Fiji hit back as Nemani Nadolo, Leone Nakarawa and Metuisela Talebula scored either side of the break.

But further scores from Joe Launchbury (two), Joseph, Alex Goode and Rokoduguni saw England secure their biggest winning margin against Fiji.

Biggest winning margin for England
England head coach Eddie Jones had promised "fish and chip" rugby - namely that the hosts would produce a traditional, structured game to play to their strengths and not let things get loose, which would benefit Fiji.

But, although they duly used the power of their driving line-out to score three first-half tries, they also showed plenty of ambition, with the 10-12 axis of George Ford and Owen Farrell combining well to release the backs.

The skilful and explosive Fijians finally came to life near the break, scoring three quick tries as England slipped below the standards they had set initially.

But in the end the hosts - who made five changes to their starting XV and brought on several youngsters from the bench in the second half - equalled their highest ever total against the visitors.

_92561973_dalynewpa.jpg

Elliot Daly was another to score his first Test try for England
Four-try burst
Recalled centre Joseph opened the scoring inside the first few minutes, skipping over from Owen Farrell's nicely delayed pass, and Daly was next to cross, latching on to to Ford's long pass and leaving the Fiji defenders tripping over each other as he cruised over.

Rokoduguni then scored his first Test try, against the land of his birth, and two tries from driven line-outs, for Harrison and Launchbury, meant England were still scoring at better than a point a minute at the half-hour mark.

Fiji fight back
Fiji had yet to make it into England's 22, denying the world class Nadolo and sevens star Nakarawa the chance to show what they could do.

And, when they did finally get down the other end of the pitch, the pair featured prominently before the former crashed over in the corner for their first try.

On the stroke of half-time it was Nakarawa showing his power and skill to stretch over despite the attention of a pack of England defenders.

And early in the second half full-back Talebula beat three men on his way to their third score.

_92563861_nadolorex.jpg

The 20-stone Nadolo was a handful every time he got the ball for Fiji
England regain control
England had been knocked out of their stride but they managed to regroup and pull away convincingly.

Goode scored his first Test try, courtesy of prop Mako Vunipola's perfect take-and-give pass, before Joseph picked off a speculative pass from Fiji's Cornwall-born fly-half Josh Matavesi to score an interception try to complete his brace.

And there was still time for Rokoduguni and Launchbury - the latter becoming only the second England second row to score two tries in a Test - to complete doubles of their own.

England: Goode, Rokoduguni, Joseph, Farrell, Daly, Ford, Youngs; M Vunipola, Hartley (capt), Cole, Launchbury, Lawes, Robshaw, Harrison, B Vunipola.

Replacements: George, Marler, Sinckler, Ewels, Hughes, Care, Te'o, Slade.

Fiji: Talebula, Masilevu, Tikoirotuma, Vulivuli, Nadolo, Matavesi, Vularika; Ma'afu, Koto, Saulo, Ratuniyawara, Nakarawa, Waqaniburotu, Yato, Qera.

Replacements: Talemaitoga, Ravai, Atalifo, Soqeta, Dawai, Radrodro, Matawalu, Murimurivalu.

Beauden Barrett was adjudged to have grounded the ball for New Zealand's second try despite Irish protests

Swami
November Series: Ireland v New Zealand
Ireland (6) 9
Pens: Sexton, Jackson 2
New Zealand (14) 21
Tries: Fekitoa 2, Barrett Cons: Barrett 3
New Zealand avenged their shock defeat by Ireland two weeks ago as they won a brutally physical contest in Dublin.

Tries from Malakai Fekitoa and Beauden Barrett put New Zealand 14-3 up after 14 minutes although there looked a question mark over Barrett's grounding.

Robbie Henshaw was already off injured and Ireland soon lost Johnny Sexton and CJ Stander as the All Blacks stretched the game's laws to the limit.

Two Paddy Jackson kicks cut the margin to five before Fekitoa's clinching try.

After Jackson's second penalty after half-time, the Irish couldn't turn intense pressure into points with Rob Kearney's inability to off-load as a try beckoned in the 56th minute a key moment after Israel Dagg failed to clean up a Simon Zebo kick.

Not for the first time, Rory Best questioned referee Jaco Peyper after Fekitoa's 65th-minute try with the Irish skipper convinced that replacement Aaron Crudden had delivered a forward pass to the try-scorer as New Zealand scored in their first foray into opposition territory since the break.

_92564905_henshawbrace.jpg

Ireland centre Robbie Henshaw was forced off early on after a controversial high challenge by Sam Cane
Match officials' decisions will be talking point
A major talking point after this fiercely-contested game is likely to be the performance of South African referee Peyper and his officials.

New Zealand flanker Sam Cane looked fortunate to avoid a yellow card, and possibly even a red, for his early shoulder charge into Henshaw's neck and the All Blacks continued to thunder into tackles for the remainder of the contest.

Scrum-half Aaron Smith and try-scorer Fekitoa were yellow carded for further high tackles on either side of half-time and there looked to be a number of other occasions when the referee could have reached into his pocket.

The absence of the Sexton-Henshaw axis for more than three-quarters of the game was a huge blow for the home side, who nevertheless showed immense courage in trying to take the game to the All Blacks, with Devin Toner and Sean O'Brien among numerous outstanding home performers.

However, ultimately Ireland were unable to break down the world champions with the available again lock Brodie Retallick particularly influential for Steve Hansen's side.

Jamie Roberts charges over line to score Wales' second try
Man of the Match
Amanaki Lelei Mafi was tireless in defence and a nuisance with the ball. What more can you ask of a number eight?

Sean Maitland scored Scotland's try after fine work from Huw Jones
The Stormers centre slipped one tackle and held off another to off-load for Maitland to go over in the corner. Laidlaw's touch-line conversion squared things up at 13-13.

The Scots were pinged for a scrum infringement and Sanchez duly nudged Argentina back in front with the boot, only for Laidlaw to respond in kind to make it 16-16.

Grandstand finale
Scotland lifted the tempo in the closing stages - Laidlaw, Russell and Hogg all now playing on the front foot, desperately seeking a ruthless touch to cap their industry, as Russell sent his first of two drop-goal attempts wide.

Laidlaw had a chance to nudge his side ahead with three minutes to play, but his arcing penalty from the right bounced back off the upright.

The ball was regathered, though, by the chasing Scots, who now had possession in the shadow of the posts. But that meant the Argentine defenders could quickly close Russell down, and parry away drop-goal effort number two.

That, it seemed, was that. But the Scots continued to rack up the phases as the clock ticked past 80 minutes, and when Juan Leguizamon was penalised for a clumsy, no-arms tackle, Laidlaw pounced from the tee.

Scotland: Hogg, Maitland, Jones, Dunbar, Seymour, Russell, Laidlaw (captain); Dell, Brown, Fagerson, Gilchrist, Gray, Bradbury, Watson, Barclay.

Replacements: Ford, Allan, Low, Swinson, Wilson, Price, Horne, Visser.

Argentina: Tuculet; Moroni, Orlando, Hernandez, Cordero; Sanchez, Landajo; Noguera, Creevy (captain), Herrera, Petti, Alemanno, Matera, Ortega Desio, Isa.

Italy had never beaten South Africa before Saturday's victory in Florence

South Africa (12) 18

Italy earned their first victory over South Africa in their 13th meeting with a tense win in Florence.

Tries from Bryan Habana and Damian de Allende gave the Springboks a 12-10 half-time lead.

But the Azzurri battled back after the break and Giovanbattista Venditti added to South African-born Dris van Schalwyk's first-half try.

A Carlo Canna penalty with 15 minutes remaining gave the home side their first home win in two years.

Italy thought they had sealed the result two minutes from time when Marco Fuser crashed over after a driven maul but the try was ruled out for an Italian foot in touch.

The home side had lost all 12 of their previous encounters with the Springboks, dating back to 1995, all by 16 points or more.

Defeat heaped more misery on the embattled South Africans who in the past six weeks have suffered their heaviest home loss at the hands of New Zealand, only drew with the Barbarians, and lost to England 37-21 last weekend - their first defeat by the English for 10 years.

England beat Argentina despite early Elliot Daly red card

England scored a penalty try after Matias Orlando (14) deliberately knocked on with Tom Wood poised to score
Old Mutual Wealth Series
England (16) 27
Tries: Penalty try, May Con: Farrell Pens: Farrell 5 Red card: Daly
Argentina (7) 14
Tries: Isa, Cordero Cons: Hernandez 2 Red card: Pieretto
England won their 13th match in a row by beating Argentina despite Elliot Daly's red card after less than five minutes at Twickenham.

Wing Daly was dismissed for taking out Leonardo Senatore in mid-air but a penalty try and three Owen Farrell penalties opened up a 16-0 lead.

Tries from Facundo Isa and Santiago Cordero cut the gap to two points.

A Jonny May score pulled England clear with Argentina's Enrique Pieretto also sent off for a stamp on Joe Marler.

It is England's 12th win under Eddie Jones and sets them up for next Saturday's visit of Australia when another victory would equal the Red Rose's longest winning run, set across 2002-03.

Argentina end their northern hemisphere tour with three defeats following losses to Wales and Scotland.

The result also ensures the World Cup semi-finalists will be amongst the third seeds in the draw for the 2019 tournament next May, potentially placing them in a 'group of death'.

Daly has a very early bath
_92674890_red_card_rex.jpg

Elliot Daly is the first England player to be sent off at Twickenham since Lewis Moody against Samoa in 2005
Daly became only the fifth England player to be sent off in an international after taking out number eight Senatore as he caught a high ball.

The 24-year-old, who usually plays in the centre for Wasps, tipped Senatore over his shoulder and the Argentine, who was unable to continue, landed heavily on his head and neck.

After viewing the video replay, referee Gauzere told Daly he had no option but to show the red card.

Later in the half there was a similar incident as May was taken out by Juan Pablo Estelles, but only a penalty was awarded as the Gloucester man landed on his side.

"Elliot's tackle was an error of judgement but I've got no issue with the decision, none at all," said Jones."

"Losing Elliot was tough but we adapted well and it was a great team effort. Some of the forwards were outstanding."

England show character in adversity
_92676604_jonny_may_rex.jpg

Jonny May has scored eight tries in 21 international appearances
The hosts looked to be seriously up against it when Isa and Cordero scored either side of the break against 13 men after Daly's dismissal and a yellow for Dan Cole.

Jones' men dug in and managed to resist a tiring Argentina for the rest of the game. They even began to gain the upper hand in the scrum with Farrell kicking two further penalties before May ran in the corner after George Ford, Tom Wood and Jonathan Joseph drew tackles to release the Gloucester man.

Despite the Daly red, it had looked like it would be a more straightforward victory when referee Pascal Gauzere awarded England a penalty try just before the half hour after Matias Orlando deliberately knocked forward a Chris Robshaw pass with Wood poised to score.

Fourteen quick points against 13 men
_92674894_isa_try_rex.jpg

Argentina scored their first points in the 48th minute of the first half
A key passage of the match came at the end of the first half as Argentina's pack laid siege to the England line with the hosts forced to concede a succession of penalties.

The visitors decided to pass up the opportunity for an easy three points and opted for repeated scrums. As the penalties accumulated, England lost Billy Vunipola to injury and Cole to the sin-bin as Gauzere lost patience with the repeat offending.

With the half in its 48th minute, replacement flanker Isa eventually picked up and drove through scrum-half Ben Youngs to give Argentina a huge boost going into the belated break.

Holding a two-man advantage, they went for the jugular at the start of the second half, moving the ball across the field to Estelles. The winger drew in Mike Brown on the left flank and quick passes sent Cordero clear under the posts.

The gap was suddenly down to two points and Jones' 100% winning record looked in danger, but the hosts dominated once Cole returned to the field.

"The way we adapted our tactics and coped with the problems was tremendous," said Jones. "It is credit to our strength and conditioning staff to get the players to the level of fitness they showed in the last 20 minutes.

"I think we won the match before half-time. The way we held on with those scrums was superb. It was 15 men against 13 but we coped."

It ended with another red
_92676884_handshake_afp.jpg

Enrique Pieretto and Joe Marler shook hands after their confrontation but they were shown a red card and yellow card respectively
The match ended as it began with Gauzere showing another red card, this time to Argentina's Pieretto who stamped on fellow replacement Marler after the England prop held on to him.

Marler was shown a yellow for his part in the incident.

What's next?
England end their autumn campaign with the visit of Australia next Saturday (14:30 GMT), looking to make it four wins in four weeks.

"We are looking forward to Australia next week. It is going to be a bit of fun because the Australian media last June was very disrespectful to us," added Jones.

"I am very keen to have a chat to the referee about the Australian scrummaging.

"They have got some issues with the way that they scrum so we need to have a meeting with the referee and we will invite the Australian coaching staff to come along."

Flanker CJ Stander's tackle on Australian back row Michael Hooper typified Ireland's spirit
November Series: Ireland v Australia
Ireland (17) 27
Tries: Henderson, Ringrose, Earls Cons: Jackson 3 Pens: Jackson 2
Australia (7) 24
Tries: Haylett-Petty, Kuridrani, Naivalu Cons: Foley 3 Pens: Foley
Ireland won a pulsating Test against Australia to clinch victories over the 'big three' southern hemisphere teams in the same year for the first time.

Tries from Iain Henderson and Garry Ringrose helped the hosts to a 17-0 lead but the Wallabies fought back with three touchdowns to move into the lead.

Keith Earls' score proved decisive but it was the Irish forwards who laid the platform in a breathless encounter.

The result ended Australia's hopes of a Grand Slam over the home nations.

They had defeated Wales, Scotland and France and will face England in the final match of their northern hemisphere tour next week.

Dane Haylett-Petty scored the tourists' first-half try, with Tevita Kuridrani and Sefa Naivalu crossing the line after the interval.

Paddy Jackson kicked two penalties and three conversions for injury-ravaged Ireland, with Bernard Foley contributing 12 points with the boot for Australia.

The battling triumph made it a successful November Series for the Irish, Joe Schmidt's men having already beaten New Zealand in Chicago, seen off Canada in Dublin and then losing a bruising encounter to the All Blacks at the Aviva Stadium last week.

Ireland were led out by skipper Rory Best, who joined an elite band of players to win 100 caps, following Brian O'Driscoll, Ronan O'Gara and Paul O'Connell and John Hayes in reaching the significant milestone of a century of appearances in the green shirt.

Australia, who also lost when the nations last met on Irish soil two years ago, made nine changes for the match, bringing back key men like Israel Folau and Michael Hooper, who sat out last weekend's 25-23 win over France.

In the end though, it was Joe Schmidt who came out on top over Michael Cheika in the battle of the former Leinster coaches, both of whom had led the Irish province to European Cup success.

The home side enjoyed sustained periods of pressure in the first half, bossing territory and possession with accurate crisp passing and domination up front and at scrum time, but Australia defended resolutely for the most part, despite infringing repeatedly and conceding a series of penalties.

Jackson's first successful kick was scant reward for his side's early supremacy, but Ireland took advantage of Dean Mumm's 10-minute absence in the 'sin bin' for a tip tackle on Tadhg Furlong.

Henderson crashed over for the opening try after a fine grubber kick by Simon Zebo, which Earls collected smartly, before off-loading to the Ulster second row.

Despite losing Rob Kearney and Andrew Trimble to injuries, the Irish continued to have the upper hand.

Exciting centre Ringrose showed enterprise and invention to increase the lead when he weaved and ducked his way through an admittedly porous-looking Wallabies defence to score beside the uprights.

Haylett-Petty completed an exquisitely executed passing move by touching down under the posts in the final minute of the opening half to reduce his side's arrears to 10 points at the break.

_92677516_mummyellowcard.jpg

Australia flanker Dean Mumm saw yellow midway through the first half for a tip tackle on Tadhg Furlong
Ireland's growing injury woes - with Johnny Sexton, Robbie Henshaw and Sean O'Brien ruled out - were exacerbated when Jared Payne, a pre-match fitness doubt, failed to appear for the second half.

The subsequent reshuffling of the Irish backline left Connacht scrum-half Kieran Marmion to enter the fray on the right wing, another replacement, Leinster fly-half Joey Carbery, having earlier slotted in at full-back as Irish resources were stretched to the limit.

Cheika's side came out with renewed intensity and Henry Speight had a try disallowed for a forward pass, before Kuridrani dived over in the corner in the 46th minute, with replacement Naivalu repeating the feat 10 minutes later as the visitors nudged ahead for the first time.

Ireland regained the lead when Earls finished clinically for a score in the 66th minute and Joe Schmidt's men showed indomitable spirit to retain their advantage, repelling all Australian attacks to celebrate a memorable success over another southern hemisphere giant.

Captain Best rounded off his special occasion by leaving the field to a standing ovation in the closing minutes, while Foley's late yellow card for a dangerous tackle on Devin Toner had little impact on the final outcome.

Ireland displayed outstanding character and resilience throughout to end 2016 on a high by winning their 12th Test of the year in heroic fashion, with the odds seemingly stacked against them, last week's defeat by the All Blacks having taken a heft toll in the treatment room.

The highlights of 2016 were a first away win over South Africa, and a first victory over New Zealand after 111 years of trying.

They continued the form which saw them rise into the top four of the world rankings, a position they will hope to retain in a bid to secure a high seeding for May's draw for the 2019 World Cup.

Ken Owens tries to force his way through in the early exchanges
Autumn International Series
Wales (12) 27
Tries: Owens, Tipuric, Cons: Halfpenny Pens: Halfpenny 5
South Africa (6) 13
Tries: Cassiem Cons: Lambie Pens: Jantjies 2
Wales ended their autumn international series with a comfortable win over disorganised South Africa at the Principality Stadium.

Hooker Ken Owens' try from a lineout rumble in the 44th-minute opened a 14-point gap before Springbok flanker Uzair Cassiem hit back.

Justin Tipuric's try clinched only a third-ever win over the Springboks.

The defeat means South Africa have lost eight times in a calendar year for the first time in their history.

Watch: Wales 27-13 South Africa - the best of the action

Leigh Halfpenny kicked 17 points as Wales clinched three November wins for the first time since 2002.

The 14-point winning margin was a record for Wales against South Africa, beating the 10-point gap in the 29-19 victory in 1999 when interim coach Rob Howley was captain.

Wales looked comfortable at 20-6 five minutes into the second half, but the mistake-prone Springboks rallied through their forwards to put pressure on Howley's team.

But when Tipuric ran onto a short pass from Taulupe Faletau and swerved past the last defender with four minutes remaining the game was safe.

South Africa were a pale shadow of the team that knocked Wales out of the World Cup in October 2015, and coach Allister Coetzee will face a major inquest on his return home.

_92677251_cdf_261116_cf_wales_v_south_africa_020.jpg

Leigh Halfpenny kicked four penalties in the first period
Wales dominated for long periods without making South Africa pay for their many mistakes.

Visitors fly-half Elton Jantjies, in particular, had an accident-prone game, yet Wales looked to be lacking in confidence in attack.

Coach Howley, in charge while Warren Gatland prepares for the British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand next summer, will be relieved by the final score.

_92677414_gettyimages-625934446.jpg

Dan Lydiate receives treatment for his first half knee injury
South Africa started brightly with Francois Venter and Rohan Janse van Rensberg making early inroads.

But after Jantjies gave them a seventh-minute lead, Wales took control, aided by some chaotic handling and poor decision-making by the Springboks.

Apart from a burst down the left by Jonathan Davies, the home side did not really ask serious questions of their visitors. Their territorial advantage, though, yielded four penalties for the immaculate boot of Halfpenny.

When Owens rounded off a forward drive early in the second half with South Africa scrum-half Faf de Klerk in the sin-bin, things finally looked rosy for Wales.

The Springboks were then let off the hook and when Cassiem scored from another lineout drive things looked uncomfortable for Wales.

Tipuric eased the nerves, and ensured Wales recorded their most successful autumn in more than a decade in a contest only soured by a first-half knee injury to Dan Lydiate.

Autumn internationals: Stuart Hogg scores individual 'X factor' try for Scotland
Georgia, living off scraps, put over another penalty to make it 24-11 but Hogg's try stretched the lead again. There was ambition and luck at its heart. There was nothing on for the full-back, so he chanced his arm, dinked a kick over the top and chased like hell.

The breaking ball took a vicious bounce away from the covering Alexandre Todua and landed kindly in the onrushing Hogg's hands. Away he went for Scotland's fourth try, once again converted from out wide by Laidlaw.

The fifth came early in the second half, Watson coming round the corner of a scrum and blasting his way over. The conversion made it 38-11. It was the belated catalyst for Georgia to get some ball of their own. They scored their second try when shoving Scotland to kingdom come in the scrum. They shunted their hosts over their own line and the dot down for Lobzhanidze was a formality.

Georgia's scrum continued to cause a newly disjointed and error-prone Scotland problems. Moray Low was yellow-carded in the midst of this for another buckled scrum. The hosts had a rousing finish, though.

Ali Price was only three minutes into his debut when he tapped a penalty and went from deep in his own half. Rory Hughes, another substitute, was on Price's shoulder and he in turn found Hogg who ran in his second and Scotland's sixth.

Scotland head coach Vern Cotter: "It was a good first half. We scored three pretty quick tries, and we held the ball so they couldn't access the game as they would have liked. We kept the ball down the other end, and when they gave it back to us, we managed to counter-attack and get points.

"In the second half, the game seemed to open up a little, it was a wet ball and it was cold out there, so the transmissions weren't as neat and quick as we'd like. And they were very good over the ball.

"But I thought we did things pragmatically, kept them out of it and scored points when we had to.

"I think there's been a good shift in the way we approach these games and manage them, and Greig (Laidlaw)'s done a great job in that with his guys around him. And we just keep improving."

Ben Youngs' sublime try capped a man-of-the-match performance from the England scrum-half
England caught cold
The last time Australia played England at Twickenham was last October, when they thrashed Stuart Lancaster's side 33-13 to knock them out of their own World Cup.

But it has been all wins for England since Eddie Jones took over as head coach, including a 3-0 whitewash of the Wallabies down under in the summer.

Michael Cheika's Australia started in ominous fashion and should have taken an early lead through the boot of Foley, but he pushed a straightforward penalty kick wide.

And England had another early reprieve when a try by Tevita Kuridrani was struck off after being referred to the television match official.

After Dane Haylett-Petty kicked through, Owen Farrell was enveloped by David Pocock, Mike Brown fumbled behind the try-line and Kuridrani touched down the loose ball.

The TMO decided Pocock had knocked the ball forward in the act of tackling Farrell, but the hosts were punished for their lack of focus from the very next phase.

Australia had the better of the early scrums, which were expected to be a controversial area
Australia won the scrum against the head, the ball was spun left and winger Naivalu, making his first Test start, skipped over in the corner unopposed.

During a spiky build-up, both head coaches accused the opposition pack of illegal scrummaging.

But it was the fired-up Wallabies who had the best of the early set-pieces, and another good shove on the England try-line led to three more easy points for Foley.

Farrell settled England nerves with a penalty of his own before Ford chipped through for winger Yarde, who was just beaten to the touch-down by Haylett-Petty.

Another Farrell penalty reduced Australia's lead to four points before Joseph latched on to a Farrell hack-through and went over for a try. Sekope Kepu having spilled a poor pass by scrum-half Nick Phipps.

Foley levelled things up after a neck roll by Tom Wood on Pocock before another penalty on the stroke of half-time edged the Wallabies ahead again.

The best team-talk in history?

Marland Yarde just beat Israel Folau to touch down after a cute kick through by Jonathan Joseph
Whatever Jones said to his team during the break had the desired effect, because after the restart everything suddenly clicked into place.

First, Bath centre Joseph turned creator with a cute kick through for Yarde, who just beat Israel Folau to the touch-down.

Man-of-the-match Youngs increased England's lead with a fine solo try, the Leicester scrum-half taking a quick tap-penalty, selling Phipps an extravagant dummy before scampering over.

Prop Kepu displayed fine athleticism to narrow the gap, squirming out of a couple of tackles before galloping over for his third international try.

When Haylett-Petty was shown a yellow card for a late shoulder charge on Brown, any hopes that Australia might have had of stealing victory evaporated.

And when Pocock tried to force things late on, his attempted miss-pass ended up in the hands of Joseph, who went over for his second try and wrote Jones' England into the record books.

'We were terrible' - and what else they said
England boss Eddie Jones: "We were terrible in the first half. I don't think we could have tried to play worse than we did. We rebounded very well to get back into the game and, conversely, in the first 20 minutes of the second half we were outstanding."

Jones on the unbeaten run, despite missing a number of first-team players: "It really shows where the side is going. The real test is when you are not at your best and have not got your best players."

Man of the match Ben Youngs: "Sometimes there is time for the hair dryer but Eddie just said we couldn't play any worse and it was up to us to rectify it. We knew what to do and it was just about doing it."

The pundit's view
Former England fly-half Paul Grayson on BBC Radio 5 live: "England have shown mental resilience in adversity. Eddie Jones couldn't have planned it better. It was nowhere near perfect but a brilliant, brilliant finish to an outstanding year."
