I’ve always quite enjoyed learning about the behind the scenes business of television, whether it was through reading about it or documentary. There’s a few documentaries that I’ve returned to a few times, which I’ll detail below. Are there any documentaries about TV that you’ve enjoyed that you would recommend?
Nightmare at Canary Wharf: the tale of the ill-fated pairing of odd couple Kelvin Mackenzie and Janet Street Porter, as they headed up the Mirror Group’s attempt to break into cable TV in the UK and end the dominance of Sky satellite TV. It’s interesting in that it seems like such a doomed to fail plan, given that cable was never a big player in the UK TV market but the 90’s were obviously a more hopeful time.
Trouble at the Top - Eldorado: an account of the BBC’s early 90’s soap fiasco Eldorado, featuring interviews with some of the cast and crew.
The Battle for Britain’s Breakfast: the story of how BBC and ITV went head to head in the 80’s in a battle for the breakfast TV audience.
