Cruise with the Dallas stars! :)

James from London

International Treasure
It was announced on Twitter the other day that Sue Ellen, Lucy, Peter Richards and April are doing this five-day meet-and-greet thingy on an actual cruise. I kind of imagined Peter giving swimming lessons in the morning, followed by trampolining on deck between 2 and 4, and then OPEC making April walk the plank every evening at dusk. (And presumably there'd be some sort of wine-tasting thing hosted by Sue Ellen that gets abruptly cancelled after the first day and nobody mentions it again.)

I replied to this on the other thread it was posted on so I'm sorry to be repeating myself.

I have been very tempted, but as I said on my other post there's just no way I could recapture my experience of the Palm Springs Reunion.

I met some amazing American people in the audience that night and they treated me like a VIP. It was literally a free for all at the meet and greet as that part wasn't very well organised.
It was such a special unforgettable night.

I think if I was to see Peeedurrr and Sue Ellen I would be the only one there who enjoyed THAT storyline....well I would, wouldn't I?

I loved that storyline too!

Why couldn't Sue Ellen see that a young, hot lover was the right way to go!

Chris Atkins was great as Peter Richards.

It's just this time I hope he keeps his clothes on! :innocent:

I think we're in the minority there, most viewers hated it. People critised it saying that wasn't Sue Ellen.
Why not? She was vulnerable after the Holly and fire fiasco.
She had needs too.

Many also disliked Christopher Akins and said they had no chemistry. I could see it! but then I would I guess.
Linda wasn't keen on the story either, she wanted it done in a tasteful way.

Maybe her disapproval of kissing a bloke half her age showed on screen to some.

I fear that Sue Ellen and Lucy’s rivalry over Peter may reemerge with a new, frightening intensity from over 40 years of buildup. This isn’t just the Southfork Pool we’re talking about - I’m picturing people thrown overboard!

(at least Peter will have undergone puberty at this point)

This was the first pic I saw of Atkins on "Dallas":

Obviously, I expected "something else" from his storyline (both ladies infatuated by Peedur?). But since I already knew him from "The Blue Lagoon" and was aware of his "talents", I really loved him on the show. However, it seemed to me that the producers changed their minds about the plot and wanted Swellin have a baby with Peedur. Could be possible that audiences made them change almost of their scenes together? Because they turned him into a semi-stalker despite all the effort in presenting him as an innocent, romantic, idealistic young men. Did Swellin see that in him? I think not, not even when she agreed to sleep with him. She was all "so confused, this is a mistake, should I drink (kidding)?

They certainly tried to create a buzz around the arrival of Peter. Plenty of fake news thrown in for effect telling us there was a fall out between Larry and Patrick.

Also to add glamour and excitement they were introducing Priscilla Presley as well as Christopher Atkins, now THAT really was fake news. PP adding excitement?

Poor Peter was hardly ever photographed with a top on. I sort of wish I was a stowaway on that cruise now. 60 odd or not I'd still like a peek at that midriff.

I met Peeedduurr at Fan Source in LA in 2008 - the best and most intimate Dallas event i ever went too and far better than the 30th at SF

and my question to Christopher Atkins was about those very speedos!!

He was a nice guy but some of the pics you could buy of him to get autographed were a little racy to say the least! :eck:

I enjoyed the story arc then and it didn't diminish on a rewatch. In fact this one of the best seasons of Dallas as JR is involved in everything. I'm giving my age away here but I was 18 when Peter Richards arrived in Dallas so I could see why he was infatuated with an older woman. Many didn't enjoy the story but when you sit back and watch without judgement it really works. Christopher played Peter with innocence and Linda played the vulnerable Sue Ellen perfectly. Many argue Christopher was too young to play the role as it was uncomfortable to watch. Wasn't this the whole point? Wasn't this why Dallas was so good?

The restaurant scene between JR, Sue Ellen and Peter is another gem. Oh heck...let's just watch it again. Keep an eye on Sue Ellen as she comes to the realization JR has set Peter up.

Oh I love that, many thanks for sharing, one scene I never tire of watching.
I agree so much with your post even though I enjoyed it first time round, every time I rewatch it I can see how well it was really done.

Did you purchase any of those racy pics?

Here's a pic of Sue Ellen in a bubble bath and her thoughts on the Peter story (tabloid version obviously)

There's also a short film with Christopher Akins discussing his short lived Peter role on YouTube which I'm sure you're all aware of. It shows him with Linda having a photo shoot and tells how viewers as well as Linda disapproved of their story.

I've always been curious about the blurred lines between an actor and their character. An actor is hired to take on the persona of a fictional character and should go with the flow on how the writers construct those characters within a story.

Sue Ellen was sex on legs and had needs, just like the men on Dallas. Who could forget her walk in the park admiring those shirtless men. Her wandering into JR's bedroom late one evening and using him.

I enjoyed watching this version of Sue Ellen, lustful, throwing caution to the wind rather than drowning her sorrows in a bottle.

I often wonder, with how how the storyline was built up in those scenes above and with all the pre-season “boy toy hype” in the tabloids, if the relationship was originally intended to be far more lusty than what we got, with the producers changing the tone as they saw the lack of sexual energy between the actors.

Even without any rewriting I’m guessing even the same exact scenes and lines coming from a more “masculine” actor with a deeper voice, body hair, etc. (e.g. the actor who played Jerry Hunter or a young Brad Pitt or Tommy McKay or Sasha Mitchell type, or even say a college-age Patrick Duffy) would have come across differently. Someone like that (let’s assume this guy can actually act) might have pulled off the “innocent lovestruck college boy” while preserving the “Sue Ellen gives in to her sexual urges” aspect.

What a ridiculous headline ‘Can Dallas be Saved? ‘ in 1983?! Seriously. It was the number 2 show on US tv at that point! If they’d written that headline in 1988 or 1989 it would have far more credibility. We have Jenna and Peter to thank for saving the show. The nonsense they make up to sell a rag… That’s super you got to meet Chris @Barbara Fan :)

I remember it being teased it would be quite daring and lustful. In the video I posted about earlier the fans are blamed as apparently they "didn't like a young man carrying on with an older woman."
The narrator also says Linda originally objected to the story. I can't recall her actually speaking about it anywhere, just reading about it in newspapers and magazines.

If they acted on Dallas like they do on the photo shoot it would've looked so much better, they seem so comfortable with each other.
A couple of pics of them getting ready for the shoot, the picture quality of the video isn't great.

This depends on the audience Dallas producers were trying to capture. I can see how the elderly were horrified but the testosterone hot blooded guy would have been enthralled. Dallas was known to push the envelope of sex and I wish they had leaned into this further.

The issue was the producers had backed themselves into a corner with an elderly cast to start with. Don't get me wrong, the likes of Victoria, Linda, Priscilla, Audrey, Fern & others could heat up the screen but the only male cast member in shape was Patrick. As the series progressed watching an aging Larry in bed with some hot young thing was beginning to look a little creepy, especially when he hooked up with Cathy.

By the time the producers came to the realisation they needed to introduce younger cast members it was too late...they drifted too far from the core characters. Perhaps it would have been wiser for the introduction of JR's illegitimate son to appear earlier in the series or Jason Ewing's twins (boy/girl) to arrive at Southfork at an earlier time. These characters however should have been in their late teens.
