Dallas To Get Remastered In HD

Interesting, at 02:43 there is a wide shot of the barbeque that they obviously couldn't find the film element for and had to upscale it.
What a difference in picture quality, it's like at least 5 times worse if you watch it on a decent quality screen.

That was done so respectfully and with so much care and gratitude. I've never seen something on this level as a send off for an actor (and character) ever again on TV.
Touching. Respectful. Beautiful.

... and the most touching thing is that even though dozens of years have passed since then, we still have a sense of sadness for these deceased actors.

The Covid-19 pandemic has made us all less sensitive to the pain of losing relatives and friends, but we still have a certain nostalgia for actors who were part of our cultural imagination.

I thought Jock’s death was handled so well, and it played out in a realistic amount of time, as opposed to everyone getting over it in two episodes.

I remember that they were searching for him in South America and JR hopelessly said something like , “It can’t end here. Not in this stinking hole.”

I also loved the episode “Head of the Family” where Bobby was trying to hold the family together and finally pulled JR out of bed, with JR pitifully saying, “It’ll never be the same, Bob.” And by the end of that episode, JR’s motivation for his business misdeed has pivoted from pleasing his daddy to building a legacy for his son. Excellent storytelling.

Ellie’s denial of her grief mirrored my mom’s. While my mom didn’t deny that my father had passed, the true grief didn’t hit her until three or four months later. Again, excellent writing.

And of course, the battle for Ewing Oil in the wake of the reading of Jock’s will was one of its best storylines.

It's why I was really annoyed the writers tinkered with the idea of Jock potentially still being alive. I appreciate some here on this forum thought it was good but Dallas was bordering on daytime soap trope. The world knew Jim Davis had died. The way the writers weaved his death into the series and what came of it was riveting television. Why then undo all that brilliant story and performances?

For me it just wasn't Dallas anymore by that point. The old Dallas died when Pam woke up. The Ewing-Oil-Building explosion was the last moment of OG Dallas for me.
All that came after was just a different show in a different universe.

That still would be 55 years away for Dallas

I just caught an episode from Season 10 on iTunes in HD. Correct me if I am wrong but is Season 10 the year Lorimar began to edit their filmed shows on videotape? I ask this because the quality - even if it is indeed remastered - is markedly different from the other seasons which look near-pristine. Something seems "off" with the opening credits with Victoria's opening credit sequence looking really, really bad. The footage of her in the middle of the sequence where she is walking towards the camera is extremely blurry and of bad quality - her features are indistinguishable. I am shocked Warner Bros let this pass.

There are no original film elements for the opening credits from Seasons 10-14 so Warner have just upscaled them from the video source they had available to them, which is why they don't look as great as the earlier opening credits. The end credits however were completely remade from scratch. And the Season 10 episodes look so much better now compared to what we had before. .

It's a shame they couldn't have remade them, as apart from some various cast changes during the opening the main sequence is more or less identical to the season nine opening which should be pristine. :(

I guess maybe I got mixed up with the apartment he eventually falls from.

Yeah, if i remember correctly, that was JR's apartment, which he had temporarily, because he was kicked out of Southfork.
Plus, that was the same building where Alexis' penthouse used to be, over on Dynasty. So one time it was supposed to be in Denver, the other time in Dallas, while the building actually was located in the middle of Los Angeles
