Well I never knew Knots Landing had Christmases! Don't remember that at all.

I do blame JR for what he was like and how he treated his wife and loved Sue Ellen standing up to him and cheating on him.
It took her awhile but once she started standing up to him it made them even more compelling. I thought it really embellished her character as well.

I hated his other conquests when they set Sue Ellen up or thought they could replace her
I didn’t mind it because it added to the J.R. and Sue Ellen drama, and that’s what they did best. It always made me feel like I couldn’t wait to see what they would try next, how he’d hurt her yet again and what would she do in retaliation. Of course that usually meant a return to the bottle and we had already seen enough of that.

But JR was the one we loved to hate in all aspects of his life. It was easier to forgive him than others. That's what Dallas became isn't it?
Yes.

Despite all the conniving, backstabbing, manipulating, cheating, etc. I think deep down we all secretly liked him and got a kick out of the things he was able to do. We all wanted to be him at some point, if even for a day.

When JR was without Sue Ellen he was much less. Their relationship however turbulent was compelling and exciting.
I have to agree. I think it was a classic case of “can’t be together and can’t be without one another.” Neither was ever quite the same without the other.

It seems to me that the soaps (or their respective seasons) are being judged as a whole, and completely disregarding the joy of watching an episode - which is how it used be when we watched it for the first time on television.
I'd be here till this time next year if I started judging Dallas by episode. I wouldn't mind though, more than happy to do that.

There were definitely many standout episodes that I loved, but still love Dallas as a whole, apart from the last 2 seasons.
I can't say I base my opinion on episodes alone though.

I don't know if it was meant to prove anything, but to me it does prove that rating a series or season as a whole is not as simple as we think.
When fans complain that "this was trash and that was trash" then it only refers to the most basic parts of the soap, and for what it's worth I often agree with them.
But it doesn't always reflect the reality of watching a soap opera.
I think I rather watch great scenes and performances in a bad storyline than vice versa.

I've read quite a bit of those reviews some time ago from @James from London which were brilliantly critiqued and made for some really interesting reading. It also presented a chance for catching up with Knots Landing episodes.

Of course my reviews might be very different as everybody's would.

And there's no way I could condense a whole episode in quite the same way. My opinions on JR and Sue Ellen's scenes alone would fill countless pages!
