Dear Sue Ellen

If you‘re so concerned about John Ross being emotionally scarred by the Southfork fire and his parents’ toxic relationship, then maybe you should stop instigating arguments with and verbally attacking JR in John Ross’ presence. You do this all the time.

Love, Everyone

JR plays those mind games. He'll get something started which he knows will warrant a reaction and when the person reacts, it makes them look bad.

After the fire it was Sue Ellen who looked into ways of getting support for her son. JR as usual could see no need for talking therapy. He did agree to go in the end which resulted in them bickering, but that wasn't infront of John Ross. Sue Ellen knew her son was damaged and did the right thing to get him help.

Let's not forget JR physically attacked his son's mother infront of him and compared her to Pam's whore Mother when Sue Ellen tried to leave with him when she told John Ross they were going for a drive.

He also caused upset when he tried to get Miss Ellie to nick John Ross from The Southern Cross. Sue Ellen was guilty of the verbal rant at JR infront of her son after the fire but that pales into insignificance compared to JR's verbal and physical outbursts.

I hope this post gets on here, I've got to be here for Sue Ellen!

I still read here even if I can't log on. Missing you all and really trying to rectify the issues.

I'm having site issues too, which would indicate that the problem isn't anything of our making but rather a problem with the site itself.

JR just used little John Ross at times, like when he took him from Sue Ellen's town house back to Southfork so he could control his casting vote when Miss Ellie tried to remove him as President of Ewing Oil.

Ewing Oil came first, second and last with JR, over and above his family even his own son when he was a toddler.

I agree with a lot what’s being said here but I’ll just add that I felt J.R. and Sue Ellen both made mistakes as parents. J.R. could be insensitive and use his own family as pawns in his games but Sue Ellen was always making the mistake of going back for more. I’ve always felt her biggest mistake was remarrying him once she was already out and on her own. She was just too gullible and weak compared to J.R. and that was always his way back in her life. It wasn’t until years later that she finally learned how to deal with him and realized how stupid she had been, as she even said in her final season. I wish we could’ve had more of that Sue Ellen around earlier on in the show to deal with him. The stronger version was so much more fun to watch for me and I loved how she’d needle him and be a thorn in his side when he needed it. As for John Ross, well, kids having to observe battling parents saying insensitive things is nothing new. It’s all par for the course when it comes to upbringing. Certainly it played a part in shaping him and his personality flaws we saw later on but that’s life. Neither of his parents were even close to perfect but they obviously loved him and did the best they could given the circumstances of being rich, dysfunctional people.

I’m not defending JR. But I’m watching these episodes now and it’s amazing how many times she instigates an argument with John Ross in her arms, when JR is not provoking her in the moment. She is understandably pissed at JR over the Holly Harwood and Walt Driscoll issues, but for god’s sake, wait until your son is out of earshot before going on the attack.

I don't recall JR having such conversations in private either. Sue Ellen alone isn't to blame. They are both as bad as each other.

So many conversations and rants took place in the nursery and then later in earshot of John Ross.

JR once said regardless how he spent his playtime his priorities were with
1, His wife (laughable)
2, His family (really?)
2, His child (he said this before he knew John Ross was his child)

Even battling postnatal depression and alcoholism Sue Ellen still loved her son and sought help for herself to show that love.
JR was nasty and cold towards him when he didn't know if the baby was his just because he was a nasty person. Chances are he was the Father. He didn't know, yet his attitude towards the baby was disgusting even referring to him as a bastard before he was born.

At least Sue Ellen got herself help and later help for her son. JR ridiculed her for that, but she tried to be a better person, JR didn't ever try.

And JR called Sue Ellen a whore more than once and an unfit mother right infront of baby John as well as a number of other derogatory names.

Verbally abusing her in their son's presence was far worse than her instigating a few cross words infront of him.

Let’s not forget Sue Ellen choices her newest boyfriend over her son and moves to England. This is not something a good mother does, especially since he was still young and been through so much. I know this story was because Linda was leaving the show, but it really puts Sue Ellen in a bad light.

Does it? Actually it was the opposite. Sue Ellen allowed John Ross to stay where he wanted and she knew he wanted to stay at Southfork. Then James comes along and JR totally forgets about John Ross and he gets fed up and joins his mom in Europe.

I felt it was definitely out of character for her. I can’t see Sue Ellen going to live in a foreign country and leaving John Ross behind with J.R. Allowing him to live at Southfork while she still lived in Dallas was one thing, but this was quite different. It was what her son wanted and yes she did put him first with her decision but I just don’t envision her ever doing that. Obviously they were limited as to how to write the character out and they weren’t going to kill her off.

I don't see why this guilt trip analysis only has to lie at Sue Ellen's feet. She had many struggles that she dealt with but John Ross came first and I've said in earlier posts she didn't resort to cruel put downs like JR did to her.

JR's ability as a Father is questionable, but accepted in those days as long as he was finacial provider which was only because of his Daddy's company.

Eventually Sue Ellen provided her son with love and affection once she sought help and put her son first.

The Ewing woman were frowned upon in the early days for wanting a job. The Ewing women didn't have to work.

Leaving John Ross behind was out of character, especially to move away but she'd done that before knowing her son was taken good care of and not just by JR. I would like to think she kept in as close contact as she could then.

Usually children make their own minds up about their parents once they're older and more free to make their own decisions.

I can't think JR needs to be praised for putting his son first or providing him with affection and emotional stability. JR is not deserving of that credit.

With reference to JR's cruel put downs, I meant Sue Ellen didn't resort to that in the presence of John Ross whereas JR did and thought nothing of cruelly putting down his son's Mother infront of him.

We know Sue Ellen often resorted to calling JR "You bastard" (which was deserved) but not while John Ross was in her arms or infront of him.

I think TPTB really wanted to keep John Ross (and Omri Katz) in the show, otherwise they wouldn´t have repeated the scene of Sue Ellen leaving him at SF (Dream Season: "En Passant", Season 12: "No Greater Love").

Maybe it was a producers´ (=Katzman) choice to get "revenge" on Linda for quitting, as they did with runaway mummy Pam and Victoria. Or maybe the writers (=Katzman) thought that only one child at SF would turn Christopher into a weirdo (you know, imaginary friends and all that...).

"I´ll never leave you son, I promise..."

If "Dallas" had been "real", there is no way Sue Ellen had gone to England leaving her beloved son behind, after so many traumas and kidnappings she had to endure for him.

"I want to live with you Daddy. Mama is a drunk
and an unfit mother..."

And last but not least, the best part of that decision was the damaged version we got of John Ross in TNT "Dallas", probably one of the three best things of the sequel. Though they retconned it by making John Ross "obliged" to accompany Sue Ellen to London, instead of making it his own choice. Why did the Cider House have to ruin everything?

"This show sucks, doesn´t it Omri?"
"I´m not Omri...!"

Both JR and Sue Ellen spoke too freely in front of John Ross. My person feeling is that those two were so obsessed with each other, John Ross was almost an afterthought. When they were getting along, they left him to entertain himself while they stayed up in their bedroom all morning. When they fought, they often ignored his needs and what was best for him just so they could get their digs in.

Having said that, I think as bad as a mom Sue Ellen was - she was the best mother on Dallas (of course we never got to see Donna parent Margaret).

So many of their conversations took place in that nursery. JR grabs Sue Ellen's arm and questions her what she was doing in town, she ends up saying their marriage is, "sick JR, very sick".

When she asks for a divorce, JR really goes on the verbal attack. Baby John is awake in his cot.

Another time JR is asking where she's been and grabs her. The grab is off camera but done right over the cot where their son is upset by teething.

When Baby John is crying JR tells Sue Ellen to pick him up or something. She leaves the nursery asking why he doesn't do it as he's the expert on parenting. JR didn't know at this point he was the baby's Father and Sue Ellen still hadn't bonded with him.
