Dynasty II: The Colbys

Should opening titles have retained Dynasty II

  • Absolutely

  • No way. It was its own show.

The II makes it seem more like a movie sequel than a TV series. Coming this Thanksgiving Dynasty II:the Colbys, with Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Colby wand talia shire, as Francesca Giobeti Colby!

That is so very true, but I still don't think it fits.

Of course Jeff's family didn't exist on the parent show, except for his dead father and uncle, and a mother who was mentioned offhandedly in season one

I love season 1 and I appreciate it immensely, but it was clearly NOT written to set up the kind of long, multi-season saga that, say, Dallas or Peyton Place had as their origin stories. Its universe seemed to be more geared for a limited run: around Krystle and Blake and possible outcomes. Would she change Blake? Would he change her? Would she realize she cannot fit in and leave him? The Pollocks and Joan Collins' Alexis did change the game in season 2, but the desire to install Alexis at the helm of Colbyco worked against the show's long term plot prospects.
In terms of narrative structure, the show should have worked on expanding the Colbys instead of eliminating them. After Cecil died, Jeff was a near-adopted son for Blake (who had even suggested it at some point) and the other half of Colbyco belonged to the mother of Blake's children. Clearly, there would soon be no more Colbys. If the show had brought the California expansion pack earlier in the game, it would have actually prevented Dynasty from derailing by season 4, with business storylines being mcguffins for Alexis and Blake to be in faux Hong Kong and Faux Acapulco in season 5, and there could have been a real antagonist for Blake, like early Cecil was.

Are there any other examples of tv series with the "II" in the title? Or was the early The Colbys version 100% unique?

I never read as "derived from Dynasty", to me it was "another dynasty in another town with another villainess"

Who just happened to be a greedy and conniving and scheming sister-from-hell.
Well... she was good enough for Frankie to desperately want to imitate. But as my dear, wise old mother once told me, you can put all the lipstick you want on a pig, but at the end of the day it's still a pig. In this case, a filthy dirty slut pig.

Imagine our beloved Damsel in Distress growing up and knowing how she couldn't have boyfriend because Frankie's vagina was around. Heartbreaking.
