I remember once on the Jeffersons Florence was talking about her favorite soap. It was called The Old & the Useless, obviously a pun on Y&R. I always liked that one.

Another one that's already taken but one that I love is from the movie Soap Dish. The Sun Also Sets, which is funny as it's a film produced by Aaron Spelling about a daytime soap. Spelling later went on to produce daytime soap Sunset Beach.
On the subject of Sunset Beach, media mogul Sumner Redstone suggested the title Never Say Goodbye during a dinner with Spelling. I believe they tested it with audiences but younger audiences favoured SB. I quite like the suggested title but it’s more reminiscent of the slightly more flowery titles they gave soaps in the 60’s and 70’s. It would never have suited the show it was proposed for.

Well, my soap Never a Tomorrow Like Today is going swimmingly - it's about feuding siblings and reminiscent of Roy Windsor soaps.

I have a good sibling and a horrible one (but that the audience will like). Also, there's a moral undertone to my soap - you will not forget Today if Tomorrow waits. @Daniel Avery will understand.

And you cant forget tomorrow because it hasn't happened yet.

Real soap Number 96 had its serial within a serial, Natalie Faces Life, the cancellation of which gave a scene I've watched far too many times and can't resist posting once more:

(Highly relatable. We've all been there when our favourite soap ends).

Meanwhile, Carry On Matron had medical drama The Surgeons, on which Matron and Dr. F.A. Goode were hooked, meeting up behind his wife's back ("she'd rather curl up on the hearth rug with a good bone") to watch each new episode together. While we didn't see the fictitious soap first-hand, it sounded exciting from the opening narration of that weeks instalment:

The Surgeons.. The everyday drama of a great hospital.
Last week, we left Nurse Spencer unconscious on the operating table while Dr Carpenter, her lover, prepared to fight for her life, still unaware that his estranged wife Rachel had secretly substituted a cylinder of deadly carbon dioxide gas in place of her life-giving oxygen.

iu

Sadly, we never found out how the situation resolved since they were both caught in the act by Sir Bernard Cutting.

Oh, I really liked it better when it was called Love of Life. Not that I remember that much of it. I'm not THAT old. At least, not on here. ;)

Meadowcroft was the name of the soap that characters in Brookside watched, the name being taken from the show’s working title.

In The Secret Life of Us, Richie was cast in a soap called The River.

There was an episode of the original Heartbreak High where three of the characters got involved in a bet where they’d to abstain from something they loved. Anita’s part of the bet was to stop watching her favourite soap Kakadu Hospital.

lol, I'm actually obsessed with Love of Life, if only for that episode that's available online where Meg wears a doily on her head.

You can tell she's the evil one from this picture alone.

And of course, the good sibling will have to fight for her right to live a life of quiet dignity, which isn't possible because of the bad shit that keeps happening to her.

(organ music plays) "Laura Wallace is a mother, sister and most of all human - this is her story and fight to live a life of dignity, because there's Never A Tomorrow Like Today."

Gets all soap chat members watching.

On Murder She Wrote (episode Murder in the Afternoon), there was a soap called Our Secret Lives. Jessica investigated the murder of the head writer/boss who was killing off characters left and right in a serial killer storyline.

On Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (episode As the Will Turns), Will was cast in a soap called Now and Forever. But when he found out that his character was gay, he did his best to get fired. He went bananas while filming a live scene and name-dropped plenty of real soaps, even pulling off LeAnn Hunley's wig and calling her The bald and the beautiful. Of course, he then found out that his character wasn't gay afterall and his recast was cast opposite Halle Berry.
