Telly Talk Star
Season 1
Episode 1 - Opening
Lucy Ewing sits out on back deck of a stone lodge overlooking the green shore and fresh water seas below. Well into her sixties now she still looks a bit of the Texas socialite beauty.
Across from her, a very young, Asian man sits with a pad and pen taking down notes.
Lucy says, “What a horrible June it’s been so far. I’m glad to be up here.” She stares off into the straights of Mackinaw. “The sailboats will be by soon. Liam would have loved to see them just once more.” Her voice breaks up. “He loved the wind. The New Port to Bermuda race, then Detroit to Mackinaw. Anyway the next ten weeks at Highlands will be just what I need. Rest up before joining the world again. People will visit. Liam’s son will be up by the end of the week. Let’s work on my a schedule for next year.”
“We don’t have to do this Miss Lucy?” the young man says with a thick Chinese accent.
“No, Master Liang, I need to. Life goes on, right?”
“Will you cut it out. You make me sound like an old man from a bad Hong Kong film.”
“Master’s what you call a young boy.”
“Again I’m not twelve.”
“And again its been seven husbands since I’ve been a miss.”
“Ok. Ok. So life goes on. After this ten weeks you’ve got the Jazz Festival in Detroit blocked.”
“Just like Liam. An old clock, everything on time, year after year.”
“Then to New York and Europe for autumn. Returning to the Porcupine Mountain Club for hunting last weekend in November.”
Lucy interjects, “If only my grandpa could see me now.”
Liang doesn’t miss a beat, “Before being back here for Christmas.”
“Make sure you block off some time for skiing. I promised Jay if he spent Christmas with me we’d get in skiing. It’s not Idaho but it’ll do.”
“Got it.”
“Where is New Years going to be?”
“St. Barts. Then back to New York and Europe for winter. Fall and winter events are filling up fast. Easter this year is into April, bringing you back to Highlands. Then spring back to New York and Europe”
Lucy smiles. “Then right back to Detroit, Memorial weekend and early June. Liam loved tradition.”
“He loved the Detroit Grand Prix and Michigan LeMans.”
“Jay told me next year he’d be my escort to everything.”
“You’re cousins son is a nice young man.”
“He is. Surprising if you’d known his grandpa.”
Liang checks his phone. “Your brother-in-law is here.”
“Do I really want to see him?”
“I can send him away.”
“No. I better get it over with.”
Liang goes into the house.
Lucy mumbles to herself, “I know you and your brother didn’t get along. He did marry and divorce your second wife. But I don’t know a thing about running a business. This is too much Liam. Too much. Why couldn’t you come up with a better idea than me?”
A short, dark, handsome, and Semitic, man walks out of the house. “Lucy. How are you doing?” Her leans over and hugs her as happy as anyone could be, in stark contrast to Lucy’s somber mood.
“Just trying to put things back together, Ryan.”
“I’m sure you’ll do just fine. I want to fill you in as you’re the trustee of my brother’s trust.”
“Yes indeed. No sure what he was thinking. But, go ahead.”
Ryan sits. “I don’t know how much he told you while he was fighting the cancer, but right after I took over I meet with Edgar Rosemont, my father’s partner in the Kellogg Fund.”
“I know Edgar. He’s our neighbor up here.”
“Yes. Yes that’s him. He’s probably up now, too. Anyway the plan has been to merge Bishop Chemical, which I took over running after Liam resigned.”
“Because he was sick.”
“Well yes. True. Anyway, Edgar and I are in the process of merging Bishop and Bing. Two giant chemical companies. For tax purposes we’ll need to keep them together for a year. During which time we’ll stream line by merging different divisions into three groups. Then, after a year, we’ll split them up into three separate companies.”
“OK. If you think that’s best. What about Sam?”
“Sam?”
“Liam son.”
“I know who he is, but what about him?”
“Liam was grooming him to take over Bishop Chemical. He’s the whole reason Liam moved to Michigan and took over running Bishop Chemical, created Highland Investments. Built this place. He wanted something to leave to his son.”
“I really don’t think he’s capable of running a Fortune 500 company.”
“I don’t know. But it’s what Liam talked about.”
Ryan takes her hand. “Don’t worry. I’ll oversee Highland Investments.”
“That’s Liam’s holding company, for Sam. It includes his shares in Kellogg and Bishop. He’d want Sam to oversee it?”
“He might. But we have to do what’s best for Sam and his kids as well as all the shareholders and employees. I’ll step in to oversee the Foundation’s Investments too. I’ll make sure you have all the money you need to work on the projects you and my brother put in place. It’ll be fine.”
“I just don’t know. Sam has been working at Bishop his whole life. He’s friends with the Bishop family too.”
“They lost control of the company decades ago.”
“Yes but Sam . . .”
“Sam’s a spoiled rotten brat. He’s going on forty. What’s he’s accomplished?”
“That’s not fair.”
“Just leave everything to me Miss Lucy.”
Lucy sighs.
Opening credits, instrumental song kicks in: something like from the house of cards except for videos of the Highland estate and
