The mini-series Buelah Land also has a great, OTT melodramatic tumbling over the balcony scene.
A sick woman (fever or something) runs outside to the balcony, thinking she'll find her husband there - they think he died in the war - and the woman who's taking care of her (maybe her aunt) tries to stop her but then she also falls. The story is not as great as North & South but it's equally soap-y.
Starring Leslie Ann Warren as the tormented heroine!

This just in:

The CW, in an effort to make the season-ending cliffhanger into a 0.3 ratings blockbuster, requested that the producers expand the episode from 60 to 90 minutes. Anxious to please their CW overlords, they had to do a few re-shoots to "draw out" the already-plotted episode and pad out a few scenes. But overall, I don't think it's too noticeable, do you?

I like "As the Stomach Turns." It has some surprisingly good ideas for soaps, actually. Though one of my favorite sketches is "Raised to be Rotten", as it reminds me of an exaggerated version of Sammy Jo.

That middle part (see arrow) looks like a good place for a fight and a terrible, tragic accident.
They have used this part of the second* floor in many scenes and that landing always beckons me, it's just waiting for disaster to happen.
