I'm watching CW's Dynasty

In one of the most recent episodes I've watched, Fallon refers to herself as "the forgotten Carrington", which is the title of any article written about her. But she is most definitely not the forgotten Carrington. I don't know what in the world happened between James Mackay and the CW or the producers of NuDYNASTY, and I honestly don't care, but the show is most definitely left with a noticeable hole due to his continued absence. To make matters worse, the show seems to go out of its way to make it appear as if Steven doesn't exist and that Blake and Alexis's only children are Fallon and Adam.

We've talked about it over and over, but Steven (who was played quite wonderfully by James Mackay) was one of the best characters during the first season, and he is really the glue that holds the entire dysfunctional Carrington family together. He is so humane, self-sacrificing, which puts him at odds with the more materialistic and power-hungry members of his family, namely Blake and Fallon, but he has a soft spot for Alexis, the mother that spent the majority of his life basically in exile from Atlanta.

Without Steven, there really is nobody to keep Fallon in check, to challenge Blake, or to be the "good" to Adam's "bad". I mean, Anders doesn't even seem to miss his biological son, nor does Blake seem to mourn the son he raised that turned out not to be his. I thought, for a while at least, that Adam was going to take over the reigns for our missing Steven, but now that he's buddied up with Alexis and her new hubby Jeff, that no longer seems to be in reach. Which, I suppose, leaves Sam to fill that void, even if it doesn't make any sense. Sam is left without any ties to the Carringtons. He's divorced Steven and his aunt his dead, but yet he still leaves with the Carringtons, eats at their table, mingles with them socially. Fallon called him her "brother" after they left Steven in the sanitarium, and I suppose that relationship was continued, but Sam's involved more in shenanigans now that anything terribly serious. He runs La Mirage (a homage to the hotel Fallon owned in the OG show), but his side-fling with this guy named Fletcher hit the skids when Fletcher turned out to be married.

Anyway, that's my primary drawback from the continuing saga that is CW DYNASTY -- the lack of Steven. I keep wanting him to come back, but I know that's wishful thinking. The show has recast Cristal and Alexis two times each, but yet no such thing has happened with Steven. While I don't know if I'd "take" to anyone else coming into the show as Steven, it does seem like the producers have some vendetta, not just against James Mackay, but with Steven as a character.

But, who knows?

I will not spoil it for you. I will say that your analysis (that there is a Steven-shaped hole in the fabric of the show) is on target. Any show that goes without tying up such a loose end before the show leaves the air would cause even more ill-will between the show and its many fans.

I will add that NuDynasty's La Mirage makes OG La Mirage look like a Motel 6. The set designers deserved a lot of praise for their work.

The multiple cast changes aside, getting rid of Steven is the greatest mistake CW DYNASTY has made so far, and there are multiple mistakes this reboot has made along the way.

The OG La Mirage looked decidedly small and uninviting compared to this CW version that's far more luxurious and atmospheric.

The original La Mirage always looked like a Motel 6 -- and not a nicer one.

It was a physical metaphor for the misguided mindset running the show by that point, just as were the Southfork interiors for nuDALLAS.

It's Daniella ALONSO not ALFONSO.... Why didn't someone correct me? Does it even matter?

Well, I finished Season 3 earlier today. I will probably start Season 4 here in a little while, or I might wait until tomorrow and give myself a brief break.

Some random thoughts:

The show is very "of it's time"... What with all the "House of Devereaux" reality show Dominique and Vanessa have going on, which Culhane has gotten tangled up with as well. Who is Vanessa's father? Is that or was that ever explained? If it was, I must've missed it. Why didn't they just give her Jackie like she had in the original? I really wanted to like Dominique when she first entered the show, but I just don't. Honestly, she seems completely irrelevant (much like the OG Dominique... sorry Diahann Carroll, as much as I like you) to much that's going on inside the show. Blake knows she's his sister, and apparently he's known for years, but that came out of nowhere. Anyway, I don't really like that she's Jeff and Monica's mother (which, are they going to make it like Monica never existed just like they're so desperately trying to do with Steven?).

I really hope they mellow the relationship between Fallon and Liam and just let them be together, but I'm not holding my breath. Fallon has to be involved in one drama after another. This is, after all, a soap.

They need to make up their minds what they're going to do with Blake and Cristal. Keep them together or break them up. Personally, I'd be alright if they split them up, but I know they aren't going to do that. The marriage between Blake and Krystle was so central to the OG show that they'd never erase that from the reboot (John Forysthe was such a stickler about the marriage being the "anchor" of the OG show that the producers basically hired Ali MacGraw for no reason in Season5... Well, she ended up lip smushing Jeff for a little bit, but I digress).

CW DYNASTY is entertaining and it pulls you in, and my only explanation for that is the utter randomness of it all. Relationships, plots, subplots, characters, tones, story structures, it all changes so rapidly. I've come to expect such storytelling tactics from this low-grade DYNASTY imitation. It's all about girl power, inclusion, and who can best who anyway.

I've got two seasons left.

One aspect you likely would not know about NuDynasty was that its run on the CW was completely irrelevant to the success of the show. The deal that was struck for the show was that it would air "first" on the CW, then pop up on Netflix. In fact, for most of NuDynasty's life it was the lowest-rated, regularly-broadcast network TV show. But it had great Netflix ratings internationally, and good-to-great Netflix ratings in the US. This Netflix success was such that the folks in charge would renew the show for another season enthusiastically very early into a season's airing. It was like that cartoon meme Take my money!! which I think impacted the show's direction and discipline. They already had the money, so they could engage in any and all flights of fancy. Though the CW execs were likely the adults in the room still trying to rein them in and get them to focus, Netflix was like that indulgent grandparent giving the child candy and snacks before bedtime. As soon as the CW's deal with Netflix was discontinued/dismantled, NuDynasty didn't have a chance, but as long as Netflix was tossing money at them they didn't have much need to be disciplined or even reactive toward their fan base the way a "traditional" network show had to.

NuDYNASTY seems like a Netflix show. When I originally watched it, the show was still new. However, I never watched it on the CW, but I always waited for it to pop-up on Netflix. Our cable provider at the time didn't have the CW.

What you're saying, though, makes total sense. I can see the show drawing more viewers on Netflix than on TV, especially with the younger crowd, who flock more towards streaming services over actual TV these days.

I wonder, will the show ever leave Netflix?

Would it have done better, creatively at least, had it been an outright CW show or Netflix creation?

The mind spins.

If not for Netflix and their deep pockets, there would not have been a NuDynasty to discuss. Well, except for the @Snarky Oracle! S10 continuation. Yes, CBS Studios owned half and had input (the CW was owned by CBS back then), but it was Netflix with the deep pockets. NF probably got the exclusive streaming rights after a point.

FYI: the Netflix I've been bumming is acting up again. With that being said, I am currently unable to complete CW DYNASTY. I will keep checking the app and get my sister-in-law to check it (you know, because it's hers) and see it gets up and going again. If it does, I will get back at it.
