I wonder if we'll ever know Crawford's true birth year. I know she widely cited 1908, which seems quite unlikely. I'm inclined to go with 1903 or 1904.

It's 1903. The "1908" was the public date (like "1950" for some people) and others have suggested "1905" and "1906".
There are evidentiary arguments against all of the cited years, so perhaps Joan was spored (hence, the 'Le Sueur' surname).
Crawford, neurotic control freak to the end, told two different astrologers two different birth years: 1903 and 1904.
