Life Is But a Dream
Part 14:
***
"John Ross, do you understand what I've told you?"
"Yes. Mama is okay, but she doesn't remember much about us."
Ellie nodded and hugged him tightly. "She remembers you. And she knows how much she loves you. It might be awhile before she remembers things you've done or places you've been together, but she remembers you're her boy."
"Does she remember Daddy?"
"Yes."
"Does she still love him?"
"Oh yes, John Ross. Very much."
"Lucy?" John Ross turned his head to look at his cousin. "Will you go to the hospital with me to see my mama?"
Lucy had spent almost every waking moment with the little boy since she'd returned to Southfork. He'd become very attached to her and comforted by her presence. "Of course, I will honey," she smiled at him.
"We'll leave in a few minutes," Ellie told them. "I have to gather some pictures to take with us. JR said they might help jog her memory."
"Okay, Grandma. Can I help pick them out?"
"Of course," Ellie held her hand out to him, "of course you can."

"What do you mean they're gone?"
"I mean my man at Justice said they're gone. Taken by another agency," Harv sighed.
JR frowned and cursed under his breath. He'd been counting on being able to listen to the tapes of Lowell's phone calls from the wiretaps, but they had been confiscated and classified
"Angelica has ties to international terrorists," McSween said. "It wouldn't surprise me if the CIA is involved."
"Now, you listen to me," JR's voice was low and dangerous, "I don't care about international terrorists and I don't care about the CIA. That woman kidnapped my wife and did things to her. I want to know why and I want to know who else is involved."
"If it's the CIA, you'll never get your hands on those tapes," Ray told him.
"No," JR insisted, "there has to be a way and…"
"JR!"
JR jumped and immediately moved to turn back into Sue Ellen's hospital room. "I'm right here, honey," he assured her softly. "I didn't leave you. Hang on one second and I'll be right there."
"Figure it out, " JR barked to the other men. "I want those tapes. Let me know as soon as you know anything else."
He turned around, walked fully into Sue Ellen's room, and shut the door behind him. "I'm here, honey," he said again, sinking down into the chair beside her bed. "Another dream?"
"You were in the hospital," she said. "I was holding your hand."
"That was when I got shot," he grunted.
"Shot? Oh,my God, JR! Who shot you?"
JR could have kicked himself. He should have never brought up the shooting. Now he was going to have to answer all kinds of horrible questions about her sister. "Well, Sue Ellen…"
"Kristen," she said softly. "I...it was something bad between us, wasn't it?"
"Do you remember Kristen, honey?"
"No...not really...just something about her name makes me sad."
"Do you want me to tell you? It's pretty ugly stuff…"
"Then no. Not now. Tell me something else good. Something about our son."
"You taught him how to skip rocks," JR smiled at her, relieved to be off the subject of her sister.
"Across a pond," Sue Ellen smiled back at him.
"Yes. He was so happy that day. And you looked so pretty."
"I remember. I remember being happy that day."
"You're always happy when you're with John Ross."
"And you," she told him. "Maybe not always, but now."
"Yes."
"I'm trying so hard to remember."
"I know. Take your time. It will all come back."
'Tell me you love me."
"I love you, Sue Ellen Ewing," he brought his head down to kiss her. "And I always will."

Jerry made a sour face when Mark came into his office and slammed the door behind him, but didn't move a muscle.
"You bastard! YOU did this!"
"Calm down, Mark."
"How? How did you pull it off?"
"Money," Jerry laughed. "The same way you pulled off the exact same thing a year ago."
"It's not the same thing and you know it!" Mark defended. "Bobby Ewing was going to die. I took him to save him."
"And then refused to bring him back because you were romancing and marrying his wife!"
"It wasn't like that!"
"Whatever helps you sleep at night."
"I want to know, Jerry," Mark's voice turned low and dangerous. "I want to know exactly how you pulled this off."
"It was easy," Jerry shrugged. "I saw the explosion on TV then saw the ambulance order. I radioed the ambulance and realized she wasn't hurt as badly as everyone thought she was. I offered the driver and the EMTs a fortune to get lost. Then I sent in a recovery team. Simple."
"Not so simple. You got caught."
"Yes," Jerry grimaced. "The recovery team got caught in traffic cameras. The police were able to find the van they used - as well as the bodies of the EMTs. If they'd dug a little deeper, they'd have found the ambulance too. They managed to pressure a police captain I had on my payroll. He's the one who got sloppy. He told them where to find her. But it's important for you to know that I haven't been caught. Neither has Graison Research. Nothing in this whole mess leads back to us."
"The police found bodies? How many people did you have killed, Jerry?"
"Just the ambulance driver and the EMTs. Oh, and the unfortunate Captain Lowell."
"Jesus, Jerry!"
"It was necessary. Sue Ellen Ewing doesn't remember anything. She knows nothing that can implicate us. We wiped the facility clean and even the lease leads to a dead end. No one will ever know we were involved."
"WE?" Mark raged. "We aren't involved! YOU are!"
"Yes, well before you get on your white horse and ride to the rescue, you had better seriously consider the consequences. If you go to the police with what you know, you'll end up in a cell, same as me."
"How do you figure that?"
"You rat me out, and I sing all about Bobby Ewing.
"It's not the same thing."
"It's kidnapping. It's genetic modification," Jerry shot back. "And by the way," Jerry's voice dipped low, "how do you think your sweet little wife will feel about you when she finds out you took the love of her life from her and have been hiding him for over a year?"
"I'm not sure any of that matters to me," Mark muttered.
"It matters," Jerry shot back. "Sue Ellen is fine and she's back in the arms of her rattlesnake of a husband. You going to the police now serves no purpose. But the consequences will be catastrophic for you."
"I need to think," Mark rubbed his temples.
"Yes you do. But think hard, Mark. Think about whether or not punishing me is worth destroying your life."

"You understand, son?"
John Ross nodded and looked at his father with wide eyes. "She knows who I am but she can't remember things that happened."
"Yes. And she might remember things when she sees you and talks to you. If she asks questions, it's okay to answer them. It will help her remember."
"But… if she doesn't remember the bad stuff, isn't that a good thing?"
JR reached out and pulled the little boy into his lap. "The bad stuff is part of our lives, son. It's part of what makes us who we are now. It's part of what makes us love each other so much."
"But what if she gets mad?"
"Well, John Ross, I'm scared about the same thing. I don't want your mama to be mad or sad either. But that's no reason to hide the truth from her. She needs to remember everything. Good and bad. Just remember, she loves you very much. And she loves me too. Nothing is going to change that."
"Okay, Daddy. I'm sorry I was mean to you."
JR hugged the little boy tightly and kissed the top of his head. "I'm sorry I ever gave you a reason to be. Come on," he said, setting John Ross away from him and standing up. "Your mama is waiting for you."
He took John Ross by the hand and led him towards Sue Ellen's room.
"What?" He asked Lucy when he caught a glance of the look on her face.
She was smiling and her eyes held a spark of surprise. "Nothing," Lucy shrugged. "Lead the way, Uncle JR."

"This is incredible," Daughtry muttered. "It reads like science fiction."
"Yes," the young agent agreed. "But it's all true. We've confirmed it all."
"I can certainly understand why The Company would want to get its hands on this technology. This could lead to…"
"The creation of entire armies of super soldiers," the agent finished the thought for Daughtry.
"We need Bobby Ewing."
"And Dr. Ellis too," the agent agreed. "It's being handled."
"And me?" Daughtry brought his eyebrows together. "Obviously I have a part to play if you're here and telling me all of this."
"Your assignment is JR Ewing. He is raising a stink at Justice and causing all kinds of waves. Get him under control."
"And how exactly am I supposed to do that?"
"I don't know, but you'd better figure it out. Our superiors want him silenced. And they don't particularly care what method is used to do it."

Sue Ellen held tightly to John Ross's hand.
As soon as she had seen his face, a flood of memories came rushing back to her. She'd recognized Ellie and Lucy too.
"Right into the pool," Lucy laughed, finishing her story about JR and Sue Ellen's second wedding day.
Sue Ellen laughed and shook her head. "Sounds like quite an exciting reception!"
"Excuse me," a nurse came into the room. "It's almost time for Mrs. Ewing's meal."
"We'd better get going," Ellie said, standing up and helping John Ross off his mother's hospital bed. "Your mama needs her rest so she can get stronger and get home to us."
"Can I come back tomorrow?" John Ross looked at his father with hopeful eyes.
"You bet," JR smiled and rubbed his son's hair affectionately.
John Ross smiled wide and hugged his mother's neck. "I love you, Mama."
"Love you, too," she breathed against his hair.
"I'll be right back," JR bent down to kiss her cheek. "Just gonna walk them out."
Sue Ellen nodded and waved as her family left the room. She smiled and reached for the stack of pictures Miss Ellie had left for her.
Her smile grew wider as she flipped through them. She remembered so much more now. She could put a name to most of the faces and had fuzzy recollections of some of the events.
She stopped flipping when she got to a picture of her and JR on their wedding day. JR looked so handsome! He was smiling and his arm was around her waist. Her eyes came to rest on the woman standing beside her in the picture. She was beautiful. She closed her eyes and forced herself to picture the other woman in her head, concentrating hard on trying to remember her name.
"Pam," she whispered finally. "She's my friend."
She opened her eyes and studied the man pictured beside JR. He was handsome. He had a beautiful smile and dark, thick hair. "Bobby," she smiled. JR's brother.
She frowned when it suddenly hit her that Bobby was dead. His funeral...something had happened to her at his funeral.
She concentrated hard again, trying desperately to remember.
"Bobby…"
Her body stiffened and she felt her heart begin to beat wildly. "It can't be…" she gasped.
But yes. YES! She remembered…
Alarms started going off all around her. Two nurses ran into the room and started checking the machines that surrounded her.
JR suddenly burst through the door, his eyes wide and scared. "Sue Ellen!"
One nurse filled a syringe while the other called the doctor. Sue Ellen looked past them both and looked her husband dead in his eyes. "It's Bobby," she cried, right before the nurse gave her a shot to make her relax. "JR! I saw Bobby! He's alive!"
