Life Is But A Dream

Miss Texas 1967

Telly Talk Addict
This story is wrapping up. There won't be many more parts. I have the ending all wrapped up in my mind and just have to get it typed up.

As with all fanfics, not everyone will be happy with the way it ends. I have read all the comments and taken everyone's thoughts into consideration, but at the end of the day, I have to write it the way I envision it.

There won't be another story from me. I know I usually start a new one as soon as I post the ending of one, but I am going to take a break for a while.

I may write a couple of short one or two chapter stories if I get inspired, but the long ones are done for a while.

Thank you all for reading and following along with the crazy stuff I make up in my head!
A not happy ending for all makes things interesting!

If anyone is looking for more stories in the meantime I have a few new ones over on ff.net. I simply prefer the ease of formatting and ability to go back and make edits if need be, but they're Dallas stories nonetheless :)

I just have got so much going on personally and professionally (my REAL writing career is FINALLY starting to take off).

But don't worry, @Sarah . I I already have an idea for a short one.

Just no long ones for a while
I'm really happy for you congratulations!

I'm sorry I keep getting side tracked with my own writing. I love JR and Sue Ellen so much but life has kinda sucked for a while :(

It will be a happy ending, just not what some have asked for.

Tonight, after all the little and semi little people finally go to bed, I will head over to FF.net and read & review.

Life Is But a Dream

Part 36:

***
Sue Ellen closed her eyes and tried to force herself to stay calm.

JR had been gone a very long while.

She had no doubt the man downstairs was Bobby. She had seen him with her own eyes. She prayed JR would handle the sudden reappearance of his brother okay.

And Pam…

Sue Ellen glanced at the closed bathroom door and sighed. Pam was not handling any of this well at all.

And Lord… Christopher...how on earth were they going to handle Christopher…

The door to her room opened and she smiled when a doctor came in. "Hello. Thank you for coming to speak with me."

"My pleasure, Sue Ellen," Jerry said, his voice low and silky. "You asked to see a doctor and you know I can deny you nothing."

Sue Ellen's eyes widened in shock and terror. "No," she whispered.

"Yes," Jerry Chuckled. "Now, you be a good girl. I have a gun and I won't hesitate to kill anyone who gets in my way. You understand me?"

Sue Ellen didn't answer him. She just stared, her mouth wide open and her eyes big and frightened.

"You're coming with me. Quietly. Do you understand?"

She shook her head back and forth violently. The sound that rang out in the room was so raw and guttural she couldn't believe it came from her body.

Pam heard the blood curdling scream and burst through the bathroom floor. Seconds later, the guard came rushing into the room.

And then, without warning, came the gun shots.

***

JR couldn't speak. He couldn't move. He couldn't even breathe.

"J...JR?"

JR shook himself out of his shocked fog and took a deep breath. "Bob?"

"Yes."

"You remember me?"

"I know who you are."

"Yes," JR mumbled. "And I know who you are. I can't believe it. I can't…"

"What happened to me? No one will tell me anything."

JR swallowed hard. "It's...you were taken…"

"By who?"

"Bob…" He cleared his throat and shook his head. He knew he was in shock. He couldn't even begin to understand what Bobby must be feeling. "There's… it's a long story and I...oh, Jesus… you're alive!"

"I don't remember...JR... where's Pam?"

"She…" but before he could finish, loud alarms started blaring all around them.

"JR!"

JR jerked his head to see Clayton standing in the doorway, breathing heavily. "Clayton?"

"JR, whatever is going on, it's on Sue Ellen's floor!"

"Sue Ellen?" Bobby repeated. "I saw her...JR, is she your wife?"

JR didn't answer. He shot out of his chair and ran to the door.

"What the hell is going on?" Bobby demanded.

Then he saw her.

She was standing behind the man...the one JR had called Clayton. Her hand was covering her mouth and tears were streaming from her eyes.

Bobby felt a lump form in his throat. He suddenly felt as if his lungs were full of lead. "M...Mama?"

"Oh, Bobby!" Ellie burst out sobbing. She moved quickly to the bed and sank down beside him. "Oh, my baby! It's you! It's really you!"

Clayton stood aside and watched the reunion. Ellie and her youngest son held each other and cried, oblivious to the loud alarms and the chaos around them. They only saw each other. And they only felt their deep love.

***

JR ran blindly up the three flights of stairs. He had no time to wait on elevators. He got to Sue Ellen's floor, pushed open the door, and tore down the hallway.

The first thing he saw when he got to her room was the dead nurse and the dead Deputy lying in the hallway just outside her door. Then he saw her.

Sue Ellen was on the floor. Her eyes were closed and she wasn't moving.

A noise from the corner caught his attention. Pam was on her back, struggling and fighting a man who was lying on top of her, holding her down. And there was blood.

There was so much blood.

JR lunged at the man, pulled him off Pam, and threw him aside. He bent over and saw the scissors in the man's neck. "Kenderson," he growled in rage.

He pulled the scissors out of the other man's neck and blood spewed out from the wound. JR knew it was only a matter of minutes before Kenderson bled out.

Doctors and security guards came pouring into the room. "See to My wife and my sister-in-law!"

"We are!" A doctor answered. "But we need to see to him too."

"No," JR barked. "He dies. Slowly and painfully.

JR moved his face close to Kenderson's and spat. "See you in hell, you bastard."

Part 37:

***

The room was eerily quiet.

Sue Ellen was asleep.

JR sat by her side, holding her hand, trying to process all that had happened.

Jerry Kenderson was dead. It had been an awful and painful death, but as far as JR was concerned, it was much better than the man deserved.

Pam was in shock, but she'd managed to give the police a full statement about what had happened.

She had been in the bathroom when she heard Sue Ellen scream. She came into the room just in time to see Kenderson shoot the deputy and the nurse.

Kenderson had picked Sue Ellen up and was carrying her toward the door. Pam had grabbed the first weapon she could find, a pair of scissors that were on the counter. She'd stabbed Kenderson in the neck from behind. Kenderson dropped Sue Ellen and fell on top of Pam.

And that's how JR had found them.

Sue Ellen was fine physically.

Pam was fine physically.

But both were mentally and emotionally traumatized.

And JR knew that for Pam at least, things were only going to get worse. He hated to admit it, but he was grateful to that woman for defending his wife. And he was worried about her too.

Bobby was alive.

It was going to be hard on them all, but it would be the hardest on Pam.

JR was so happy to know his brother was alive and well, but he would be lying if he said he wasn't worried. They'd all mourned Bobby, moved on, and built lives without him.

And of course, there was Ewing Oil to consider.

Would Bobby demand his half of the company back? Would JR have to fight him again? Would it tear them all apart?

"Oh, Miss Texas," JR leaned over and kissed his sleeping wife. "I'm worried honey. I'm so worried."

***

"So, everyone is alright?"

"Seems so. Physically at least," Ellie told her son. "I hesitated to tell you what happened, but I wanted you to know why Pam wasn't here."

"But, who is Kenderson? And why was he trying to take Sue Ellen? And what does any of that have to do with me?"

"It's a long story, Bobby," a soft voice said from the doorway. "And I suppose I'm the one who needs to tell it to you."

Bobby looked up and met her eyes. "Pam," he breathed out her name.

"Yes," Pam smiled at him, her eyes filling up with tears. "I can't believe you're here…"

Bobby breathed deeply as more memories flooded his mind. Seeing her again triggered something deep inside him. "Pam," he repeated.

Pam moved slowly to his bedside. The tears escaped her eyes and fell, some of them into his chest. "I...my God...I don't know…"

"Just be with him," Ellie said standing up. "Just be together for a while. It will get easier. I promise."

Pam nodded at the older woman and watched as she left the room. "Bobby?" She said, turning her eyes back to his face. "I...I want to touch you."

"I want you to touch me," he told her. "Please, Pam. Please just come and hold me."

Pam sank down onto the bed beside him, laid her head on his chest, and let him wrap her in his arms. "Oh, Bobby. How I have missed you."

***

JR stared out the window and tried to control his self disgust.

Bobby was rescued. But he had nothing to do with it. He hadn't even believed Sue Ellen when she'd told him Bobby was alive.

Ray was going to be okay. He had a long road of recovery ahead of him, but the doctors were certain he would recover. JR was grateful but he knew the only reason Ray had been hurt at all was because JR had left his family alone at the ranch with only Ray to protect him.

And Sue Ellen….

She was safe - but no thanks to JR.

It had been Ray who saved her from Calhoun. And when push came to shove, it had been that Barnes woman who had protected her from Kenderson. The only thing JR had managed to do was clean up the mess...the mess he had created in the first place.

"Stop it, JR."

His whole body stiffened at the sound of his wife's voice. "Stop what?"

"Blaming yourself."

JR chuckled and turned to face her. "You know me too well."

"Yes," she told him. "Know what else I know?"

"What?"

"You saved me. You knew I was out there, scared and hurt. You found me and you brought me home."

"Sue Ellen…"

"It's over, JR. We got through it. You, me, the family...we all got through it together."

"But I caused it all."

"Yes," Sue Ellen admitted. "You set all the events in motion. But you made it right. And I love you so much."

JR shook his head in wonder. "I don't know why."

"I don't either, JR. But there's a magic between us. You know it and so do I."

JR's smiled widened when he recognized the words he had once spoken to her. "Yes. And I have decided what I want my life to be."

"And what do you want your life to be, JR?"

He moved to sit beside her and reached for her hand. "I want my life to be all about loving you."

***

"Graison is being arraigned this morning," Clayton told Ellie. "I think someone from the family should be there."

"Yes," Ellie cast a nervous glance at her sleeping son. "Pam could use some support."

Pam had spent the night with Bobby. She'd told him everything. He hadn't reacted well to either the news of Pam's remarriage or of her new husband's role in his kidnapping.

"I don't think I should leave you alone with him," Clayton nodded at Bobby. "He's still very angry."

"I'm fine," Bobby suddenly spoke. He sat up in the bed and leveled his eyes on Clayton's face. "You go be with Pam. And make sure that bastard Graison doesn't get bail."

"Besides, I can stay with Mama," a deep voice said from the doorway.

All eyes turned and Ellie squealed in delight. "Gary! What are you doing here?"

Gary laughed and moved to hug his mother. "My family needed me," he shrugged.

"Hello, Gary," Bobby smiled.

"You remember me?"

"I didn't before," Bobby told him. "But now that I've seen you ... well let's just say that mug of yours is pretty hard to forget."

Gary burst out laughing and bent to hug his brother. "Welcome back, Bobby."

Bobby hugged him back. "Welcome home, Gary."

***

"JR, I swear you are driving me insane!"

"That's just too damned bad!" JR shot back at his wife. "You heard what the doctor said! You have to rest. He only let you come home from the hospital because I promised to make sure you stay in bed."

"It's hard to rest with you hovering over me like a mother hen!"

JR laughed and swatted her playfully on the behind. "Tough. Get used to it."

Sue Ellen rolled her eyes at him. "Listen, I don't want to sleep. And I don't want anything to eat. And I don't want another bath or an extra pillow."

"Is that so?" He teased her. "Then what is it that you want?"

"To be treated like your wife and not a helpless child!"

JR reached over and laid his hand lightly on her hip. "We can't Sue Ellen."

"Why? It doesn't require me to get out of bed."

"True. But it also doesn't involve rest."

"I'll let you do all the work."

JR threw back his head and roared with laughter. "Oh, really?"

"Really, JR. I need you. I need you to touch me. I need to feel you inside or me. I need you to feel how much I want you. I need you to be close to me. I need you to feel my love."

"Sue Ellen," he whispered raggedly. "I need that too. So badly."

She reached up and tangled her hands in his hair. "Then take me, JR," she told him, pulling his head down to hers for a kiss. "And give yourself to me."

JR kissed her deeply. All the emotion, the desperation, the jumbled up feelings spilled into the kiss. "I gave myself to you long ago," he growled against her lips, "and this time, honey, this time it's for keeps."

Part 38:

***

***Seven Months Later***

Sue Ellen was beaming.

It had been such a wonderful evening. Almost like something out of a dream.

The Oil Baron's ball was always special, but this year... this year it was positively magical.

Everyone was here. The whole family had come home and it had been an incredible night.

The last seven months had passed in a blur.

Mark Graison had refused an attorney and pleaded guilty, sparing everyone the pain of a trial. He had been sentenced to 15 years in prison for his crimes. JR had complained that he'd gotten off too easily, but Sue Ellen and the rest of the family were relieved to put the entire mess behind them.

Cliff Barnes was allowed to walk away from everything unscathed. JR had wanted to put him under the jail, but in the end, he'd approved the deal as a favor to Pam. He figured he owed her that much for saving Sue Ellen's life. Cliff had agreed to leave the state of Texas and promised never to return. He was living in Georgia now, trying to build some sort of relationship with his daughter.

Jenna had also moved away. She and Matt Cantrell had bonded after Bobby's return and were now living together with Charlie in California.

Jack and April had remarried in a huge, beautiful ceremony at Southfork. Jack had moved April's mother and her sister to Dallas where her mother was receiving a new experimental treatment and seemed to be getting stronger every day. Jack was filling in for Ray at Saddle Tree Enterprises and April had opened a restaurant, managed by her sister. Jack and April were expecting their first child in a few months.

Lucy had divorced Mitch and moved back to Southfork full time. She and April's sister Michelle had developed a fast friendship. Gary and Val had mended fences with JR and now frequently came to visit their daughter at the ranch.

Ray was almost fully recovered from his wounds. He had slowly resumed some of his duties on the Ranch and was getting stronger every day. He and Donna were wonderful parents to Tony and were seriously considering adopting another child.

Bobby had slowly gotten back to his old self. It had taken intensive therapy, but he had managed to reclaim his life.

He and Pam hadn't reconciled. At least not yet. But they were spending a lot of time together with Christopher as a family and attending family counseling sessions. Bobby was still a little bitter about Graison, but they seemed to be working through it.

Bobby had decided (much to JR's relief) that he didn't want anything to do with Ewing Oil. He spent his days working alongside Ray on the ranch. It seemed to be good for him.

Clayton and Ellie had survived a seriously rough patch in their marriage. A ranch hand named Ben Stivers had caused all sorts of drama, claiming to be Jock Ewing returned from the dead. Ellie had been conflicted and Clayton had been furious. Clayton and all four Ewing brothers had rallied together and exposed the man as a fraud. It had taken Clayton a while to forgive Ellie, but eventually he had settled down and accepted her apology. One positive thing that had come out of the whole sordid scandal was the four Ewing brothers had come together in what was now a strong and deep bond.

As for JR...well, JR was still JR. He struggled daily with his scheming nature. Sometimes he even gave into it - but only in business. He was just as ruthless as always when it came to Ewing Oil, but at home with his family, he was a different man.

But it wasn't always easy.

He sometimes found himself tempted to go back to his old ways. There were always beautiful women around, offering themselves to him. Mandy Winger had even turned back up in his life, like a bad penny that refused to be spent. It was hard on JR. But he stayed true to his wife. He had sent Mandy away again and he had refused every other woman. He came home to his wife every night and he kept his promise to her to be faithful.

"Isn't this lovely, Sue Ellen?"

Sue Ellen nodded her head and smiled at her mother. JR had flown Patricia in from Europe to attend the ball with the family. "Oh yes. It's just beautiful."

The whole family was there.

JR, glowing from the glory of just having been named Oilman of the Year, was currently twirling Lucy around the dance floor. Sue Ellen wished she could dance with her husband, but she was so heavily pregnant that she knew dancing would tire her out.

She was so very happy though. She watched her family dance. JR and Lucy. Ray and Donna. Ellie and Clayton. Jack and April. Val and Gary. Jenna and Matt. Even Pam and Bobby. Everyone looked so wonderful and so happy.

"Having fun?"

Sue Ellen looked up and saw Punk and Mavis Anderson smiling down at her. "Oh, yes! I am having such a good time…"

"Sue Ellen?" Punk's voice was heavy with concern. Sue Ellen had grown pale and looked as if she might pass out.

"Darling?" Patricia grabbed her daughter's hand. "What is it?"

"I…" Sue Ellen took a deep breath. "Oh, my God…"

"Punk!" Mavis whispered urgently, pointing at a puddle of water under Sue Ellen's chair. "Get JR! Her water broke!"

Punk didn't move, instead he yelled across the room as loud as he could. "JR! JR! Get over here! She's having the baby!"

The music suddenly stopped and a loud gasp rose up from the crowd. JR pushed his way through the crowd, knocking over chairs and bumping into tables.

"Sue Ellen?" He asked when he made it to her. He sank down onto his knees in front of her and gently cupped her face in his hands. "Honey?"

"Someone call an ambulance," Sue Ellen told him in a weak voice. "Our baby is coming."

***

"Would you sit down?" Pam snapped at Bobby. "You're making the entire hospital staff nervous with all your pacing."

"Of course they're nervous," Ray shrugged. "Look around. The whole damn Ewing family sitting around in tuxedos and evening gowns waiting on a baby to be born."

"I just hope everything is okay," Bobby sighed, sinking down in the chair beside his ex-wife. "It's been hours."

"I'm sure everything is fine," Ellie told him. "These things take time."

"Everything is just perfect," Patricia sashayed into the waiting room. "It's a boy. A beautiful seven pound, four ounces, healthy baby boy!"

The entire family whooped and cheered, oblivious to the strange looks coming from the nurses and the other people in the waiting area.

"Thank God!" Bobby laughed. "I have a new nephew!"

"Yes you do," Patricia laughed. "They named him Robert Ray Garrison Ewing. They plan to call him Jock."

"0h, how wonderful," Ellie gushed. "When can we see him?"

"Soon," Patricia assured her. "But Sue Ellen and JR have asked to see Pam first."

"Me?" Pam said doubtfully. "Why me?"

"No idea," Patricia answered, "but that's what they want."

"Well then," Bobby stood and pulled Pam out of her chair, "guess you shouldn't keep them waiting."

***

Pam said good nervously by the bedside and waited for Sue Ellen to finish in the bathroom. "Calm down," JR chuckled. "I won't bite you."

The bathroom door opened and JR jumped up to help his wife back to the bed.

"Oh, Sue Ellen," Pam sighed. "Labor and delivery aside, you look beautiful."

"Thank you, Pam," Sue Ellen smiled at her friend.

"He's beautiful," Pam said, staring at the tiny baby in the bedside bassinet.

"Yes. He has his father's eyes."

Pam glanced over at JR and sucked in a deep breath. "Why...why did you want to see me first?"

"We wanted to ask you to be his Godmother," JR said matter-of-factly.

"Me?"

"You're Sue Ellen's best friend. You saved her life. You are pretty close to being a Ewing again even if neither you or Bobby are ready to admit it. And I…"

"You what?"

"I want you to know I'm done with that stupid fued. We're family, Pam. We need to start acting like it."

"You mean that JR?"

"I do."

"I...I don't know what to say."

"Just say yes, Pam," Sue Ellen said softly.

"Yes!" Pam squealed in delight and moved to hug her friend. "Oh yes!"

***

"I think John Ross is happy."

"He is," Sue Ellen agreed. "He's wanted a little brother for a long time."

"Really?" JR asked, settling himself down onto the hospital bed beside his wife. "He never said anything to me about it."

"Me either," Sue Ellen confessed,"but I overheard him say so to Miss Ellie."

"Doctor says the two of you can go home tomorrow. I'm going to stay home from the office for a few days."

"You are?"

"Of course. I need to help you with the baby while you recover."

"Need to or want to?"

"Both," JR answered, dropping a light kiss on the top of her head.

"The old JR never would have stayed home from the office to help me with anything," Sue Ellen mused.

"The old JR is gone," JR reminded her.

"Not completely."

"Now listen here, Sue Ellen…"

"And I'm glad," Sue Ellen cut him off. "I loved the old JR same as I love the new one."

"Thank you for sticking it out with me. Thank you for giving me one more last chance. Thank you for giving me two beautiful sons. Thank you for loving me."

"I will always love you, JR."

"I know. And I'll always love you. I'll spend the rest of my life proving it."

"We're going to be happy. After all these years, we're finally going to be happy."

"We are," he settled her deeper down into his arms. "Our life is going to be a dream come true Sue Ellen. A beautiful, happy, love filled dream."

"If this is a dream, I never want to wake up."

"You won't, honey. This dream is your reality from here on out. I promise."

"I'm sleepy JR."

"Get some rest honey. I'll be right here when you wake up. Forever and always, I'll be right here."

I absolutely loved this story as with all your work. I'm so happy you didn't turn JR into a complete simp and that he does still struggle but is overcoming those struggles. I was nearly sick at the mention of you know who but it's good you made her into the desperate evil wannabee that she is. I did laugh at the babies long name and then 'they're going to call him Jock' :llooll: Nice touch!

Thank you for making my favourite couple happy again but most importantly thank you for your wonderful contributions to this forum. I really hope you will continue to write as your work has breathed new life into the place.

Lots of love to you!

Thank you so much. I am, but it isn't easy at times when you feel you are going against the grain. I've had to take a step back due to some of the comments I've been receiving, but I am still very much in love with them both.

Nice ending!
I kept wondering where the baby was but then looked back and Sue Ellen was super early when it was revealed so the timeline does work.
Enjoyed this one, usual nutty side characters galore hahah

Thanks for wrapping up your story @CeeCee72
Yeah it's not the ending I would have written at that point in the show as Pam did move on very quickly with Mark and Jenna did love Bobby deeply. I just can't see her with Matt. But oh well at least JR/SE got a happy ending and since this is mainly a JR/SE story I think that's the most important part! :)

Over all I do enjoy reading your stories. So thank you for sharing them with us and congratulations on your success with your actual writing career! :hat:
