Planet of the Apes is a movie that often comes up when forum members create lists of their favorite movies, but what about the rest of the series?

What do you think of the other four movies in the original series? Was Tim Burton's remake really as bad a failure as is claimed? A new reboot trilogy started in 2011 and continued with another trilogy (based on the reboot) in 2024. How excited are you about the new movies?

As for the original, I think the series got worse with each part, but was still good enough, even at the end. For me Tim Burton's remake is not as good as the original, but it's also not as bad as many people think. There's actually nothing to complain about about the reboot series except that, unlike the original, I wasn't really hooked by it.

Have you actually read the novel and does it bother you that the resolution was moved to the USA in both movies: the original and the 2001 remake?

Have you watched both Planet of the Apes TV series? Why were neither of them a success?

I actually think the novel is quite good, especially the frame plot (which was ignored in the movies) is a nice twist. As for the TV series, the animated series might have had a chance, but the cartoon competition was too strong at the time, while the primetime remake of the original movie was arguably compared too much to the original and was considered not good enough by the audience.

The original had that pre-historic/post-apocalyptic late-'60s thing going for it. That's hard to compete with.

The four '70s sequels were, naturally, inferior, but some worked on their own comic -- or dystopian -- terms well enough.

The 1974 TV series was like a repetitive Saturday morning live action crap thing and never had a chance. Never saw the cartoon, I don't think.

The 2001 Marky Mark remake missed the opportunity to at least be another sequel, a sixth chapter in the movie series, but instead opted to be a half-baked "remake" with a cute Heston cameo.

I haven't seen any more of the twenty-first century entries, and I won't before I die because there's just not enough time -- even if I live to be 114.

I'm not sure in which countries the new French-language (with English subtitles) documentary about the Planet of the Apes franchise is available, but if you get the chance, you should take a look.
