6. Wes Parmalee Was Jock After All.

Due to the passing of Jim Davis, aka Jock Ewing, Jock had to be written out the show. The Ewing Family were informed of his death by helicopter crash in South America, on the day of a Ewing Barbecue. JR, Bobby and Ray headed to South America in search of their beloved father, but his body was never discovered - only his medallion. From this point, everyone in had to except the fact, Texas legend Jock Ewing was to never return - That's until five years later, we were made to believe.

Following the Dream Season, Wes Parmalee, a new Ranch hand on South Fork, had come to claim he was the very much alive Jock Ewing, as Ellie had discovered Jocks belongings. Wes claimed he had plastic surgery and was in need of medical care for sometime and had suffered from memory loss. Ellie was between not believing him and believing him. Clayton and the rest of he family were furious by Parmalee's claims. Wes had a lie detector test and surprisingly passed it. Wes even threatened to take Ewing Oil back. Clayton was ready to fight for his marriage. It wasn't until the 1987, Barbeque, that Bobby returned from South America to discover Parmalee had met Jock and Jock had a fever whilst in South American and Jock started telling the stories of the Ewing family and their lives. This is how he got his information. Ready to confront Wes, he disappeared and Ellie told her family, that Parmalee confessed to being not Jock. Wes had lost his family years ago and wanted to be part of the Ewing family.

But, what if Wes Parmalee was Jock? What if Bobby's findings in South America had been a different conclusions. What if he discovered that Wes, was his father? I'm sure Clayton would have fought tooth and nail for Ellie. This would have changed JR's attitude towards Wes and he would have been rubbing his hands together, knowing there would have been a chance of seeing Clayton booted off Southfork and out of his mothers life for good. Possibly Bobby and Ray would have had mixed feelings, considering the father they see before them is unrecognizable to the original predecessor. What about Gary and Lucy for that matter? Jock and Ellie together practically raised their grand daughter.

With Jock back, the Ewing Empire could have turned on it's head. This Jock could have been more ruthless and Cliff would be pegged down even more in the Barnes Ewing Feud.

What if this Jock Ewing's personality were to eventually prove unlike Jim Davis's version of Jock. Jim Davis's Jock, was firm and strict, yet was always a loving family man and always wanted what was best for the family. However, Steve Forrest's version could have been totally different. He could have been the dream father, JR always wanted. Scheming and getting what you want, no matter what the cost. This then outlandish new side to Jock could have every oil baron question, 'Did Jock really cheat Digger Barnes after all?'

How would have the audience reacted if Wes was Jock? Would this have hurt the memory of the Jim Davis role, that Jim portrayed so professionally and brilliantly, and Jim Davis himself.

Some fans would agree, that Wes not being Jock was for the best. Or maybe some would say, it had great potential.

I wish they would have mentioned his one-night stand with Sue Ellen later on in the series

They didn´t, but I liked the fact that in Sue Ellen´s latter years, she used to kiss Ray or touch gently his arm as a way of greeting him for one thing or another. Susan Howard was great in doing this kind of things and I´m sure it was total improv from her.

I really do wish they'd had Lucy and Ray mention their incestuous affair again by the final season -- the brass may have wanted people to forget about it, but they didn't!!

For one thing, an eleventh hour discussion would have also reminded the viewer that the affair wasn't the fault of Lucy or Ray, because Lucy was legal in Texas and because neither knew at the time they were related.

If only the Producers hadn't reneged on this storyline Dallas might've lasted beyond 1991.

Steve Forrest would've been great as Jock but sadly it wasn't to be. He departed the show mid season & did a Gunsmoke TV movie instead.

Leonard Katzman squandered the opportunity to bring Jock Ewing back because it occurred at the same time as Bobby Ewing's resurrection from the dead, as well as his own return to the show. Even with the fan backlash resulting in Jock's re-cast return being leaked, the Producer's shot the series in the foot by abandoning this storyline. As the following season's ratings plummeted the show out of the top ten. :(

They should have had Wes behind the plot to get Ewing Oil instead of Lee Ann De La Vega, it would have really brought the final season up from the swamp that it was.

There was no fan backlash in Jock’s recast being leaked. As I’ve said before it was well known at the end of season 9 (dvd) that Ben Stivers was Supposedly Jock and everyone was very excited. The character was brought back as Wes Parmalee in season 10 and again there was no fan backlash.

There WAS backlash against the terrible dream solution and the awful new film stock (editing process) that ruined the entire look.

I very much remember at the time there was no backlash in the papers or the Wogan show or anywhere about Wes and Ben being Jock

Lady Jessica's murder spree should have been played straight, like a gothic noir movie and not tongue-in-cheek. And her victims, the cartel members we knew, who had stopped appearing anyway. (It's been cleverly suggested that she'd slept with the entire cartel in the '40s and '50s and, like Kristen after her, Jessica had blackmailed them for decades, claiming they'd fathered her offspring). Eventually, they stopped payin' and she started killin'... I might even have her living at Southfork for a time, Miss Ellie permitting it (against Clayton's recommendations) because Jessie seems contrite and properly medicated now that she's out of the asylum.

David Jacobs later recommended Miss Ellie have a TV talk show if they ever did that Travolta movie. That sounds like a good idea for the same season Jessica returns to her homicidal roots. After the tanker scandal, Miss Ellie can join JR on The Roy Ralston Show to rev up some good PR for the Ewing name; she's such a hit with the audience, that the local station offers her the program once Ralston departs to go national. JR thinks this a great idea until Miss Ellie pushes her on-air small-talk and cooking segments aside to discuss environmental issues and her liberal politics -- horrifying her eldest son and much of the cartel before Lady Jessica, not such a lady at all, has a chance to kill them, forcing JR to scheme to pull the plug on his mama's chat show.

April is a stalker, not a wife, for Bobby. She follows him to Paris where he marries Tracey and both women are killed in a barrage of gunfire. Bobby then dates and marries Afton, infuriating Cliff that yet another Ewing man has stolen another neglected Barnes woman, and that Bobby will be raising Cliff's daughter at Southfork.

I just see it. And it beats what they did.

I'm so confused. There were some plots that were hinted at that never surfaced. Is this a fantasy thread?

I remember reading once in the 80's that Sue Ellen and Angelica were going to be found in the bath naked by JR in some sort of lesbian love twist plot. I mean I ask ya.

There were stories that Angelica and Grace would be lesbians. But it never came to anything.

SueEllen clearly preferred Mandy.

Actually it was gonna be a worse tryst than that. Mandy Winger would've been naked in the bath as well!! :)

5. Pam And JR affair/Bobby And Sue Ellen too.

Imagine if either of these scenarios happened.

I mean it was almost a public scandal, with Sue Ellen and Cliffs affair and the possibility John Ross was Cliffs son. Luckily for JR, he was the father.

Since the first day, Bobby brought Pam to Southfork, the Ewings showed their discomfort of knowing Bobby married a Barnes. However, Ellie, Jock, Lucy and eventually Sue Ellen grew to like and love Pam. JR on the other hand, hated her guts and tried every trick in the book to rid her. JR through the years has bedded many women - half of Dallas possibly - but it makes you wonder if he ever wanted to sleep with Pam. He eye balled her body on a few occasions, so he must have been some sort of lust there. I wonder if the Writers ever considered JR making a move on his brothers wife and attempt at seducing her. It would take something incredible for Pam do something that insane. In any case, I couldn't imagine her and JR in bed together. Think of the consequences.

1. Her character would have been tarnished.

2.Bobby would be hateful and in rage at them both and get a divorce.

3. Cliff would disown his sister.

4. Or worse... End up pregnant with the possibility it's JRs child.

As for JR, if they had done this scenario around the time Jock was still alive, he may not only been booted out of Ewing Oil, but off Southfork also.

What about Bobby and Sue Ellen? Sue Ellen while she was in the Sanitarium at the end of Season 2, told Bobby she wished she'd had him instead and kissed him. I wonder if this scenario, ever crossed the minds of the Writers and to continue with the possibility. Bobby and Sue Ellen didn't hate each other, but he did hope that she and Pam would become friends.

In War Of The Ewings, JR had this dream of seeing Bobby and Sue Ellen getting passionate in the shower. And it also appeared that the two would kiss during the film.

The Writers possibly felt they didn't want to cross the line with viewers/fans and ruin relationships they wanted.

Yes JR hated Pam and as you say enjoyed looking at her and once propositioned her, "anytime you want to find out, can be easily arranged" Pam replied, "even if I weren't married to Bobby you're not man enough."

Pam protected JR here and never told Bobby. She knew Bobby loved his brother and wouldn't want to be the cause of a huge brotherly fall out. Their families feuding was enough.

Pam despised JR too much for an affair to ever be convincing. JR would've enjoyed the power and control of the conquest and would've feared Bobby's reaction too much to force himself on her.

I've always been a fan of the Bobby and Sue Ellen scenario and their relationship was a very close one and he came to her rescue many times. She treated him badly sometimes, but he opened old wounds for her when he asked for her help in adopting Christopher. In the end they were always there for each other.

I loved their scenes together and apparently it was Patrick and Linda's idea for their relationship to be a close one, but never to cross that line.

The audience wouldn't of brought it and Bobby would never do it, although there are a number of Bobby/Sue Ellen fans out there it was probably more enjoyable to see that in-law bond they had rather than an affair which could never have ended well.

I do think it could've happened later though once Pam was gone, but it wasn't to be.

Interesting discussion! The only way I could ever see Pam and J.R. spending a night together would be one of two ways; J.R. blackmailing her into bed by holding something over her head and making her think it would save Bobby from something, or Pam getting completely hammered one night and losing complete control of her faculties.

As for Bobby and Sue Ellen, I always liked their close friendship as the years went on but I think I’d prefer things to stay that way and not be anything more than that.

I guess with both scenarios I’m kind of glad it never happened. There’s just something really disgusting about the thought of someone going after their brother’s wife, or even ex-wife in my opinion.
