Should they have said why Southfork looked different between episodes 5 & 6?

If so, what explanation should have been used?

I put it down to Miss Ellie changing the outer plasmic shell by using the chameleon circuit of the Southfork TARDIS to alter its exterior appearance.

That's the only explanation which makes any sense and which also makes sense of Miss Ellie regenerating into Donna Reed and back into Barbara Bel Geddes.

It also explains Jock regenerating from Jim Davis into Steve Forrest but doesn't make much sense of Bobby re-appearing after the dream season. :)

Tornado damage caused major damage that led to a great renovation

In which case the old Cloyce Box ranch maybe got pulled up inside the Tornado and deposited somewhere in the land of Oz.

I wonder did it land on any witch's when it came down!?!

This post is quite appropriate coming up to Halloween! :)

That's always what I go for --- that first scene, in Reunion Part 1, where the family is by the pool and Miss Ellie & Jock are playing chess or checkers or backgammon or something. Only I picture a clear plastic tarp on the roof with workers walking around on it, hammering occasionally, and Jock & Ellie discussing how well the post-storm renovations, nearly complete, have been going.

Not a lot of detail, just a casual, off-the-cuff reference.

We never even see the storm.

The Early Years occurred in Pam's dream, so that could be taken with a grain of salt and not canon. The actual early years may have showed Jock darker and more like J.R. Also, the first house shown in the movie reminded me of the Early Years mansion

They did use a different ranch for the 1930s scenes of The Early Years. Did they explain in that movie what happened to the original house?

That was the old Aaron Southworth house; then Jock built the mansion in the late-'30s -- be it the Box Ranch or Duncan Acres.

Did it? I don’t think it did. It occurred during season 10 didn’t it?

I always wondered why they never addressed it (like you said, it wouldn't have required much effort.) That's basically how they addressed the aftermath of "Ewing Inferno."

As for the little cottages, they could have been damaged beyond repair. And since everybody congregates in the main house anyway, they might as well sleep there too.

Blasphemy, I know, but I liked the look of the first house better. The interior of the house in Little Turtle, or wherever it was they filmed the interior of the Southfork we came to know and love is classic, but the size and look of the first house made more sense, The Duncan Acres upstairs could never have had that many bedrooms. Miss Ellie's, JR's, Bobby's, Lucy's, a nursery/John Ross's bedroom, Christoper's bedroom, a guest bed room. Lol. come on. The ironic thing is that the first house wouldn't have needed all of those rooms, because of the cottages, but looked big enough that it could have.

It almost felt like there was a concerted effort to make the show look more down market after the first five episodes (smaller home and offices, tackier interior design, etc.)

I know they were forced off the Box Ranch, but it seems like they could have found an equally grand home to compete with it. Duncan Acres is nice, but it's no grand estate.

The interior sets weren't upgraded until midway through the show. It was around this time that Dynasty was making waves and they were forced to compete with it.

If they'd tried to reproduce the bedrooms from the show inside the Duncan Acres house, they'd have to leave out John Ross' and Cristopher room entirely, and Miss Ellie's room would have to be much shallower.

The middle section of the house, where most of the bedrooms are, is about 42 or 42 feet deep, while the studio bedroom sets are 65 to 70 feet.

We used to laugh at the rinky dink sets for the house and the offices on DALLAS long before DYNASTY ever existed, and wondered why the DALLAS digs were so rednecky. But perhaps that was part of the appeal of the early period of the show.

Not all wealthy people live like they're rich, but Miss Ellie still seemed tasteful enough to have at least decorated Southfork better than it was.

What's so funny about those guest cottages from the miniseries is that, apparently, Miss Ellie was refusing to lead the gardener mow the lawn at Gary's cottage until Gary comes home.... I mean, that's probably what started the fire which burned the Box ranch a few years later!

I tend to envision a scene, probably spring of '89, where JR walks into some room we never saw before downstairs -- perhaps that anteroom under the stairs everybody comes in and out of --- and finds Cally admiring the framed photos Miss Ellie has placed on the wall for display. JR starts telling her, briefly, the history behind some of the pictures, until Cally asks: "Where is that??" about a framed photo of the Box Ranch, to which JR responds, "That's Southfork..." and when Cally replies that "it just looks so different!" JR can tell her, "Oh, that's what Southfork used to look like up until about, maybe, eleven or so years ago when a twister hit us.. .damaged the big house and even wiped out all those little guests houses we used to have out back of here...." Cally gasps: "A twister --- hit Southfork??" To which JR answers: "Uhm Hmm.. it was just a month or two after Bobby brought Pamela Barnes home as his wife -- we saw it as a sign..." Cally just looks at him with a blend of mild bemusement, slight disapproval and unsureness as to whether he's kidding or not.

Of course, that doesn't explain why Duncan Acres is in THE EARLY YEARS. But efforts to correct continuity often just creates more discontinuity.

The airdate of "Dallas: The Early Years" in the US was 23 March 1986. That aired 2 days after Season 9 DVD (aka Dream Season) Episode 26 (out of 31).

I think Early Years came March 86 during the Dream. As I said before, it might not be canon

So did Pam dream The Early Years too?

That ruddy dream season explanation ruined so much of Dallas as a serious drama series. With the upshot that the Producers were too scared to recast Jock Ewing with Steve Forrest and kill Pam off outright in the season ten tanker crash. :(

Had they addressed why Southfork looked different at the start of season 2 (per DVD), perhaps Cloyce Box would have allowed them to come back just to film The Early Years.

Of course, the wasn't possible because they acted as if Southfork had always looked like the Duncan Acres house.
