Well, the Bakkers were a big part of the American TV landscape during the 1980s. Everyone knew about them, their accesses, their preaching, their parodies on SNL, their scandals, their controversies. So, when it comes to popular culture, Jim and Tammy Faye are certainly a part of that.

The one thing that kind of gets on my nerves is how these documentaries paint Tammy Faye more sympathetically than they do Jim when it comes to the PTL controversy. Tammy benefitted from the money just as much as he did. She lived in the houses, had the fancy clothes, had the finest stuff for her dogs, enjoyed having maids, and liked the publicity that came with it all.
But the media presents Tammy as if she was oblivious to everything, and I just don't buy it. She may not have been included in all the decisions, but she wasn't completely naive to what was going on around her. She couldn't have been. But the media presents her that way, and it's most likely because she was so pro-gay rights and interviewed the AIDS patient on TV. That softens her involvement to the left-wing media, and they're going to blur her involvement in the whole thing.
